I think the best argument for "why do it all ingame instead of out of game" is collaboration. Its one thing to sit in a discord call with someone, sharing your desktop as they help you debug a unity animation controller by telling you what to click but its another to have them physicaly standing right next to you, able to just reach out and go "oh its this" and change up some of the programming nodes just as you would.

    • @SnrubSource

there are a bunch of issues:
      - No Quest support, which is a huge chunk of the playerbase
      - UX for players is really complicated for casuals
      - UX for developers is abhorrent, it has a desktop mode but it doesn't even resemble any traditional game editors like the Unity Editor or Unreal Engine, so it's a nightmare to develop for.
      - There's no real coding, it's all node-based with a custom language.
The thing is, 90% of the cool stuff found in the game can already be done with Udon in VRChat, but no one wants to do it because what's the point of making cool objects if they're completely isolated within a world? That's the one great feature Neos and CVR both have, and I really hope the VRChat devs look into it someday.

But you can help by logging in frequently, providing user input, and visiting what worlds you can. Just putting that out there because I want a VR universe with a tight-knit community without an invasive anti-cheat and with plenty of creative avatars and people to talk to, and it's pretty clear that only you guys can make that happen.

As soon as I thought this my mind sprung to classic Call of duty zombies, or Halo like contactors VR does. But now, you'd basically be recreating these maps and models through the eyes of being in VR, creating these maps and mechanics in real time could be not only easier to test and correct issues, but more easy to get the fine details fixed!

I think there are a few things that need to be restated as well, you don't NEED to make things, you can get your avatar in and just hang out and save public items or what other people have made to your inventory or just not do things with items if you really wanted to. another point that seems to be a pain for most people is getting avatars into resonite but if I'm being honest, I think it can be just as much of a hassle to get a avatar into vrchat, but with vrchat it's not as easy to collaborate on or get help with. there are community made tools and mods that can make a lot of things way easier, like setting up gesture based face stuff.

It makes me sad to see that a lot of the complaints come from people expecting this to be VRChat. Reminds me of how people used to compare Sonic and Mario despite being two very different games. They share the fact that they’re platformers, yes. But you can’t go into one expecting it to play like the other.
This platform is designed to be for everyone, not just for developers. You can have plenty of fun without ever touching the dev stuff since you can socialize and share just about anything you can grab! You can nab install disks and install tons of systems on your avatar in a single button press such as posers, custom locomotion, voice projection and so much more.
And the actual workflow is dependent on the person really. I personally *love* how programming and development works in Resonite. You get live feedback on your changes, you aren’t constrained to a dev kit meaning that if you can think it, you can absolutely do it. You can collaborate and make anything with friends. (Worlds, objects etc)
It’s not without its issues however. Performance is.. spotty. The servers are very backed up right now unfortunately and there’s a learning curve to the programming/editing objects in general.
You really have to push and spend a decent amount of time in game to appreciate what it has to offer. If your first response to looking at the UI and scripting is “Ew, it looks complicated” and then turning away, then you’re missing out on limitless potential and a relaxed community that just wants to collaborate! Give it a chance, everyone! ❤

Neos, and I suppose now Resonite as well, has always reminded me of Second Life. You can have all sorts of neat toys and gadgets in your inventory that you can bring out to play with or show to people, you can create within the world itself and a bunch of other things that give me that feel. Unfortunately all my friends are over on VRChat. Yea i'd make more friends on here too but I don't want to abandon my existing friends and I just simply do not have time to spend time in both. I've been trying to rebalance things and i've even been spending less time in VRC as of late too. So i'm really really hoping this ends up being really enticing to everyone soon so that maybe we can make the jump over to Resonite. But i'm not holding my breath unfortunately. I'll still end up poling my head into this at some point though, i'd love to see what cool stuff I can get up to.
EDIT: I miss Second Life. Yea it's still around but the people I hung out with aren't. I still talk with some of them on Discord but eh. Was good times and i've had just as good times in VRC. Always interested seeing what the future holds though.

  • @SargonDragon
    @SargonDragon Před 11 měsíci +2

VRChat needs competition. Primarily because it's all of our eggs in one basket. If something terrible were to happen to VRChat, there's really nothing else to turn to. If Resonite is just more Neos, then it isn't going to ever be any sort of real competitor. Neos was always fundamentally very niche. People want to think it didn't grow because it needed better UI, or VRChat is too big by comparison, or because of crypto or whatever. And while these things are factors, even if they were resolved completely, Neos would still never grow beyond a tiny niche userbase. That's because the entire underlying philosophy of Neos revolves around creators and creators alone.
The kinds of people who are drawn to this often have difficulty understanding why everyone else isn't drawn to it, too. They view others who don't get into it as lazy and just unwilling to try something which just has a little learning curve. And I'm pretty sure that mentality applies to the Neos developers as well.
If they want to compete with VRChat and develop a substantial userbase, then their goals and priorities have been misguided to the core (even before crypto). They either don't understand or don't care what would appeal to users who are not hardcore creator types. Is there any reason to expect Resonite to be different in this respect?

Basically a Neos CEO decided to incorporate a cryptocurrency into Neos which was an awful decision that everyone hated and it was a solely money-driven decision. The actual devs themselves didn't like the idea at all. The one problem I had trying Neos that I hope is fixed or will be addressed now, optimization; Yes it's generally up to the creators of worlds and avatars to do that (and I also hope there are tools for doing that like LOD settings when building worlds or avatars), but in general it always seemed my computer was struggling to keep it going even on the starting room, and that even small worlds took ages to load. I mean, my computer can ply HL:Alyx and the medium sized quite detailed VRChat worlds at a stable ok performance, so
But honestly the thing that made we 'woah' for Neos was when I opened the menu, selected an image, and it was not there floating in the world for me to grab. I spent my first 3 hours on Resonite last night. It was crazy. Low player population, but the people I found were all nice and very resourceful. I felt like I was actually learning things. I NEVER felt that way playing VRChat. I want to stream in VR but I absolutely hated the camera in VRChat, but the camera in Resonite is amazing. As soon as I figure out how to connect the Resonite camera to OBS than the fun begins.

This has so much potential. I hope thatResonite gets a little bit over half of what the vrchat player count does. And that vrchat will actually have competition . The visual programming aspect, and the where you can hand over files over like you can hand over physical media and so much other crazy stuff that knows social VR game as ever implemented before is extremely awesome . But there should be some safety settings so in case of Crashers come in , you can't be affected or your PC can have higher performance . By blocking certain avatars or certain user-generated content .

Ok so I will tell everyone that complains having to build in VR inside this game or even how it was in NeosVR. You CAN get on desktop and do the very same things XD I actually programmed a lot in Neos inside just desktop before and it actually was more comfortable and easier to do it that way. I find I had a lot more control to create mechanics then I could think of inside VRChat. I wanted to mention that. There is a desktop version just so you know :)

A big issue I can potentially see is Resonite not putting enough limitations on user generated content for performance and optimisation reasons. I really want a social VR platform which gives a lot of freedom, but not at the expense of performance and not expressing oneself. I think there's a good balance that's possible. In VRChat, I really don't think super high poly, super high res texture stuff should even be allowed.
The issue with VRChat is that avatars that only just exceed the recommended limit are treated identically as those which are gigantic and poorly optimised.
Or, as an alternative, give people a lot of customisation when it comes to settings so that no user will ever be greatly hindered.

so social VR has been something I surprisingly enjoy quite a bit, it was mostly the pandemic that forced me to rely on it, but now that that's all over I still play VR Chat on a regular basis.
Given this seems to be just a Neos 2.0. I dont see it replacing my use of VR Chat though.
I do like using unity (despite the whole controversy with them recently, just means I wont be releasing any big games in Unity) and im very much used to the workflow in VR Chat as opposed to the neos one.
I also generally prefer developing on desktop, and *then* when its finished using it in VR. I get the idea of instantly being able to see if what you did works, but I dont like visual scripting in general and obviously in VR there isnt much other options.
But the main thing is that VR Chat just has a larger playerbase, and a lot more minigames to play. Im sure Neos/Resonite has *some* of these things, but until it gets to the level of VR Chat I dont see myself switching over.

I discovered Neos kind of late and loved its potential but didn't want to invest too much in uncertain futures. It was also a digital desert that supposedly had a few hundred online but rarely encountered. This is good news the platform concept is getting a new lease on life. The flow based programming was one of the things I liked the most as well as easy user moderation control and twitch/obs integration and API sockets. Definitely checking this out.

I've always thought that VRchat was a bit limited with what creators could do with the physics, objects, and inputs.
If this game can simply make it so that some objects are just tied to your hands and accepted multiple inputs, then it's already better.

This might be a new home for me idk, it may take a while for me to warm up to it or download it, but, It sometimes feels like VRchat is just too limited, bring on every function (especially bringing 3D avatars to life easier.) to VRchat, and you have an ultimate VR freeing/self expressing experience! Also being able to play it on desktop, without VR, for those who just can't afford it. It should be easier to make things a bit more realistic and easier to grab objects on desktop mode. I think VRchat should have a simple camera function where it can follow your face and eyes and move you around, almost like a VTubing model. And be able to be turned off, for those who don't want it. And anyone who has VR already shouldn't really care about how desktop players play, anyway. I feel like it should just be a bit more functional, so everyone can experience the wonders of the metaverse/Virtual world. Desktop users have such a hard time already from others sometimes, and should have more updates involving tweaks with desktop functions.
