Thank You Moral Orel of Adult Swim for putting 'No Children' in the episode, 'Numb".
Both are excellent
they also had old college try in the episode help!
And Love Love Love in 'Passing'
Hey, guy who requested this on Patreon here. Great job dude, you didn't disappoint.
Graham Kristensen thank you for requesting it
You did good
Thanks guy
Gonna pop in here to advocate for rough recording and grating voices, I get so much out of unpolished passionate performances and they can be used to such a powerful effect.
god the story of the alpha couple is so absolutely fantastic, with the ironic juxtaposition of their love of their hatred of each other. as someone who has loved the mountain goats since forever, this video is perfectly accurate and beautiful, good job!
You had me at the first line, when you mentioned "they arent many bands that feel as human as the mountain goats"... thats exactly what hooked me up to their music.
mountain goats + polyphonic=
i have never clicked on a video faster
Darnielle is pronounced Darn-eel.
Yes, thank you
This video is phenomenal but the alpha couple is much older than 1994.
the Mountain Goats started after John was writing a series of poems with alpha in the title and when he released his first cassette tape in 1991 it featured an alpha song called One Winter at Point Alpha Privative.
*privative. Privative is the "a" you put before words like "amoral", and so the idea is its a beginning of something very bad.
When people ask what kind of music you're into and you have to say "This guy called The Mountain Goats, but only really the boombox years"
I’ve loved this band for many years and I’m ecstatic to see them get some attention on here. Love it!
Idk if I'm out of the loop but I've never heard of this band
I regard your channel highly though so I think I'm about to stumble onto a new favourite
Edit: I'm a few songs into tallahasse and it's brilliant.. Very AJJ
They are severely underrated. Check out the Tallahassee and Heretic Pride albums.
Brilliant, thanks for the recommendation!
Jack Doyle After "Tallahassee", listen to "The Sunset Tree".
Check out the albums Tallahassee and All Hail West Texas. If you like Tallahassee more, go forward and check out their studio albums. If you like AHWT more, go back and check out their lo-fi recordings.
AJJ actually covered Alpha Rats Nest on a cover album of the album (Tallahassee turns ten). They have also covered a couple of their other songs too.
Oh man, I love the Mountain Goats! And I like all the live versions of No Children.
I was so excited when I saw this video! The Alpha couple mythology is so interesting to me. I only wish this video could have been longer!
I found your channel through searching for a mountain goats video from the past month.
After I finished watching this vid I went on to watch a bunch of your stuff, and I really like your content!
Glad to have stumbled upon you, subbed :)
'Old college try' has always been the standout track off of Tallahassee for me.
Truly my favorite band for years
All hale west Texas
Tallahassee
Sunset tree
i’ve known about the existence of the alpha couple, and i knew that tallahassee and other songs were about them, but i never really knew about their story. thank you so much for making this video, it was really helpful!
When I was considering pivoting from instrumental music to vocal music and wondering what to write about as a leader of a relatively boring life, this was the video that finally made me realize that not every song has to be autobiographical. This video has helped me jumpstart my lyric writing.
Eventually my writing did end up having my life and thoughts bleed through into the lyrics, but it still allows me the freedom of polishing some untruths in there knowing that officially the song is from a fictional person's perspective. Thank you Noah.
Big fan of Ghost Notes as well, an avid listener.
I didn't know the band until now... I'll be sure to check them out! This channel is pure gold... The quality of the video is outstanding !
What did u think of them?
Anyone ever watched Moral Orel?
Klas Kitsune someday it'll get the respect it deserves
Cameron Koontz It's way too underrated and overlooked. It's amazing
I await for the day it gets popular
It's got a cult following for sure.
thats how i found the goats from that outro was exactly what i needed
I love your videos about music. You All Along the Watchtower video in particular was amazing!
Thank you for exposing the Mountain Goats to more people. One of my all time favorite bands.
Another great video, keep it up!
John is the greatest lyricist ever.
Thanks for the videos polyphonic
Got so excited when I saw the title of this video
scrolling thru channel: "this sure seems nice might consider subscribing"
sees MG-related video: instant subscribe b4 even watching it
keep spreading the good word, brother!
I honestly don't know how you consistently seem to make videos about all of my favorite artists
It took me over a year of being a fan to listen to Tallahassee, such an amazing album
Quality work as always!
Just subbed to you a few days ago and then you release a vid on one of my top bands. I feel so lucky. Now do one on Modest Mouse
( The album Good News for People
Who Love Bad News would be killer) and I might start believing in fate. Fantastic analysis as usual. Thanks.
I have a suggestion, the influence of The Strokes during the early 2000s and how it caused great influence on bands later to come such as The killers, Interpol and Franz Ferdinand ?
Another amazing video, keep up the amazing work x
Awesome video! It's Darn-Eel tho ;)
Love your videos man
I like to think that the unreleased "Ethiopians" was like an epilogue for the alpha couple going into their old age. Great video
Dude you make such great videos!!!!!!
Another great video, the mountain goats are legends of their trade.
fantastic analysis
Whoa, I am very presently surprised to see you do a video essay on the mountain goats
Thanks for sharing this band, it was interesting. Reminds me of The Rugburns or Reckless Kelly’s “Ballad of Tommy and Marla”.
thank you for this
Thanks for make this video in my birthday
Love polyphonic
Well done vid.
Gord Downie please, that man was a poet and legendary Canadian
Already did that! czcams.com/video/RlcuNupTI38/video.html
Oooohhhh shit, how have I never seen this!? Bless up man
Great video as usual! Please do a video on the Green Day album American Idiot. It's really the last great rock album to go high on the charts. I'd leave for you to go in depth on it.
Never heard pf them. But I'll check them out. Thanks for the video...
@Polyphonic Will you please do a video on La Dispute and their poetic story telling across albums?
I really like your videos and I really think you deserve more subscribes! I would love to see you make a video about:
The Beatles, Nirvana, Foo fighters. Or more videos about drummers like you did with john bonham, maybe Jojo Mayer, Taylor Hawkins, or Dave grohl and how he went from drumming to playing guitar and how he intergrades drumming into his guitar riffs.
The mountain goats are a band I don't really listen to unless I am in a very specific sorta rough state. Usually drunk.
They're not my favorite band but it's a band that's always been there exactly when I needed them.
Awesome job man, these are some of the best videos on CZcams. Any chance on doing one on Hssing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer/The Past is a Grotesque Animal by of Montreal (about Kevin Barnes' mental struggle through those times)?
I actually have a script written on Hissing Fauna already! I just need to figure out how to do it properly haha
Polyphonic Oh awesome man, can't wait for it!
I know im not a patreon and you did a vid that featured David Bowie but can you do one about his life and him pushing boundaries? He was such a big figurehead in so many aspects of life when he was in his prime, and all the way up to his death.
Nice! I love tMG!
Finally, someone besides me who likes The Mountain Goats.
ALL I LISTEN TO IS THE MOUNTAIN GOATS, fuck yes thank you for making this video, John Darnielle is a genius
That kind of lyrics reminds me of Mishka Shubaly. I like it.
I've been to 2 of their shows.
In Chapel Hill and in Tampa
I think the story of the alpha couple is my favorite story ever told maybe
Hey that was great.. can you do the strokes, neutral milk hotel or radiohead?
Surprised this wasn’t trending like a month or two ago
-King Crimson
-Tool
-How Brain Mantia and Tim Alexander gave Primus a different approach and style
-Buckethead
I'd love to see a video about Loveless!
Biberibip bap boo bap 💥
Life is made of small insignificant moments. We remember the large grandiose moments but the small moments matter more. The couples small intimate moments were destructive and horrible. It's tragic because as much as they shouldn't be together they love each other.
Love isn't always healthy.
do a video on the strokes (: !
It's Darn-eel reee. Dude this is amazing tho.
Oddly reminds me of the early My Chemical Romance albums. Their first album (I brought you my bullets you brought me your love) tells this weird story about this couple similar to bonnie and clyde fighting off vampires or something before they die. Their second album (Three cheers for sweet revenge) continues the story as the husband makes a deal with the devil to kill 1000 evil men in exchange for his wife back. Would suggest a listen.
This is a great video! But i think i feel you need to put the last instrument legend:
John Bohnam' Drumming
Flea's Bass
Freddie mercury's Vocals
I think its only missing Jimi Hendrix's guitar
@Polyphonic, will you be concidering making another video now that The Mountain Goats have released a second Character album?
Man polyphonic I didn't know u liked the mountain goats?
Saw them live in 2023 will always remember
I think you should do something about tame impala
In the Court of the Crimson King album
you gotta do a video on Grateful Dead. so much to talk about in there
Not my cup of tea musicwise but a great essay! Happy New Year!
A Frank Turner video would be awesome
Do Pavlov’s Dog, I believe it’s a underrated band with a lot of great history behind it!
The alpha couple remind me of the plot of nick caves 'where the wild roses grow', in which the protagonist sings about being so unbelievably in love with this woman, he wants to take her down to the river Bank, cover her in roses and bash her skull in with a rock. Love makes you do these things.
I remember drunkenly slow dancing to 'No Children' with my ex fiance the night we realized it wasn't gonna work.
Could you do a video on the doors the soft parade
Alpha rats nest is about how the house burns down with them in it and how their ashes are blown to the nearby junk yard
I love the mountain goats but I find the lo fi stuff really challenging to listen to
Really liked this video, but I wish you had gotten into the AHWT alpha couple tracks. "The Mess Inside" takes a more sympathetic tone than any of the other AC songs, which I think is a lot more compelling and makes Tallahassee work better imo- you care about these people and are rooting for them to leave each other and become happy. In a half-verse: "We tried to fight the creeping sense of dread with temporal things/ most of the time I guess I felt alright/ but I wanted you to love me like you used to do."
Mike Patton would be interesting too!
The Mountain Wokes
High Tiki W O K E
Can you do one about the Lorrie songs by Turnpike Troubadours?
May we get a video on Martin Hannett, please??
John Darniell is bit like Gösta Sundqvist :)
When polyphonic makes a video on a durham-based band😩😩
Do a Grateful Dead video!
Hey man, please do a video on oasis
Yo could you do a musical analysis of les claypool
But what if you're happily married and 3 years sober?
Congratulations to 1M views on your flea video .
MAKE SOMETHING ABOUT SLASH!!
