The echo on the drums in "When the Levee Breaks" isn't from the ambient echo at Headly Grange - they used an echo machine. The myth that it's a natural echo is from a misunderstanding of something Robert Plant said in a documentary; in several interviews, the producer specifically says the echo was made by a machine. Rick Beato has a video about it.

Honestly it's so nice seeing The Band get some recognition. Those guys seem to get forgotten in the mix of 60s/70s music more times than not. Those who know of The band and really know their history understand how talented and influential they were. In my opinion, the brown album is a top 10 record of all time.

@polyphonic Exile on Main Street was listed as being as being recorded at Sunset Sound, but they only did vocals and overdubs there. It was recorded at a house Keith Richards was renting in the south of france. It's the kind of place this vid is about - an unusual recording location

In the same vein of this is Sublime's second album, "Robbin' the Hood" which has the recording location etched into it's sound. The first album, "40 Oz to Freedom," was recorded by the band sneaking in after hours to the Cal State Long Beach music department and recording it on their own. Despite this, they were still criticized by their fans and critics alike for apparently trying to go mainstream in their sound. In response, they recorded their entire second album in a tweeker pad which gives it a natural minutemen-esque sound. The entire album is also laced together with Brad's dub parts, which make the whole album feel authentic and lighthearted. You would really be interested in this album. The lead singer Brad even talks about his heroin use in "STP" (Secret Tweeker Pad) and predicts his own death in "Pool Shark". One of my favorites of all time and sadly underrrated.

    • @arvindhmani06
      @arvindhmani06 Před 6 lety +1

Spellings almost never capture the pronunciation accurately, especially in English. The reason is that it's a borrowed language with hundreds of influences that made it what it is today. That's not to say other languages don't have their quirks, but English has so many more of them. In fact let me list some out right from this very comment: capture, pronunciation (in fact anything ending in -tion), accurately, especially, the, reason, borrowed, language,... none of these words are pronounced like they're spelled.

Maybe you could do a video on Mike Oldfield, Tubular Bells and maybe even go deeper into his later stuff, which IMO is very underappreciated. Oldfield has always immersed himself in different locations, and the location of recording has always been important to his music. Tubular Bells being recorded at 'The Manor', Hergest Ridge being recorded at... well, hergest ridge in England. Currently he produces his music in his home in the Carribean, and with 'Man on the Rocks', it's not hard to see how that influenced him.

  • @Anubisdream1

Tori Amos is a good target for this kind of video. She intentionally set out on some of her best early albums to unusual recording locations to “capture the energy.” Old churches and Taos Pueblos, etc. (incorporation of the sound and feel of the place was intentional as well). I believe Past the Mission was also recorded in the Sharon Tate house when Trent Reznor lived there.

This. This needs to be done. One of the most underrated yet well-known guitarists imo.
For me, as much as I love Freddie, it sickens me how much his legacy overshadows the rest of the band. Considering Queen's best selling single was written by John Deacon, all of their heavier stuff tends to be may writing it, and the showtunes/opera were the writing of Freddie... Freddie is all anyone ever talks about, and that's a damn shame.
Need I remind everyone how little his solo album sold?
This isn't to say Freddie doesn't deserve the praise he gets... I simply think that the other band members deserve just as much praise for their contributions.
Queen + Paul Rodgers shows that Freddie alone did not make Queen, and although it isn't necessarily Queen per se, the magic found in the original lineup could he heard just under the surface. Paul Rodgers not attempting to replace Freddie, instead choosing to throw his own style in to the mix, made it something quite special even if it wasn't the original.

Also, I love that you start playing around with animations. Try using more easing to make them smoother. Thank you guys for another great video.
You should make a video on King Crimson, or even just Robert Fripp.

The house where Blood Sugar Sex Magic would be good for the next video. That album was a few months ahead of the indi-rock explosion of the early 90's.

You should do a video about AIR studio in Montserrat. It was a purpose built recording studio built by George Martin (aka the 5th Beatle, according to many) on the Caribbean island of Montserrat. A LOT of legendary music was recorded there. The music video for Every Little Thing She Does is Magic by The Police was filmed there.
It was mostly destroyed by hurricane Hugo in 1989, and any hopes of restoring it were destroyed by the Soufrière Hills volcano eruptions in the 90s. It now sits in ruins in an exclusion zone in the southern portion of the island.

Kaylee; saw a video tour of the what remains of the facility, pool and grounds about a year ago and it is rather sad.......I believe Climax Blues Band was the first contracted album session when it opened.

Headly Grange pronounced Hed - ly.
"When the Levee Breaks" - drums recorded as explained but also thru an echo machine (Bimson?). See Rick Beato who got it from Glyn Johns (again, ? Surname) who engineered it.

I think a episode about the Allman Brothers Band would be amazing, you could definetly tell enough with de death of Duane Allman and Berry Oakley.

The echo on Bonhams drums comes from an echo unit used during the recording and very little to do with Headly Grange.

as part of part two ... or maybe more interestingly, a third piece on how many classic rock albums have been birthed in the Caribbean. ( i would guess some of it is hedonism on the part of the bands , and probably tax advantages ) , but there are so, damn, many, classics that have been recorded and/or conceived there , often in the 70's and 80's
