⚠️very important announcements about portable generator safety:
      This is just a reminder.
      1) KEEPING OTHERS SAFE: Please do not allow an unqualified person or your children to operate and service the portable generator. Just because some manuals don’t say that doesn’t mean it’s safe. That is important against the generator safety rules. We also need to be keeping an eye on our children too. You need to make sure that your children are not playing near the portable generator especially when it’s running so they won’t get electrocuted. Generators pose electrical risks and they can be hot during an operation. Please keep your children away from the portable generator at all times. It is important to keep our children safe especially our little ones. Be aware of all the hazards.
      2) WHERE TO RUN YOUR GENERATOR: Some people use their portable generators indoors which increases the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. It’s important to have a carbon monoxide if you have a gas generator. Never ever use your generator indoors even if your doors and windows are open and even in the garage is not safe to use a portable generator. Not even at your porch and your deck. It is never safe to use your generator indoors and in enclosed areas of your home. Your generator needs to be 15-20 feet away from your house.
3)🔥FIRE HAZARDS: Never refuel your generator while it’s running. You need to let your generator cool off before refueling it and before storing your generator. Never overload your generator too. Never ever back feed your generator. You should never plug your generator into a wall outlet. Also never store propane tanks indoors. Please keep flammable things away from the generator as well and please don’t smoke cigarettes near the generator. Having a fire extinguisher next to the generator is also important against the generator safety rules.
      4) GENERATOR OPERATION: make sure your hands are dry before touching the generator. Never use your generator in wet conditions. Don’t let your generator get wet. You need a generator tent if you need to use your generator during wet weather. Please don’t wear loose clothes when operating the generator. Turn on your generator before plugging in appliances. Use the right cord for your generator. Please do not use worn out cords.
czcams.com/users/shortseFigDfnPkcQ?feature=share and here is a short video more about keeping others safe when using generators
Hope this helps. Remember safety first.

Several years ago, I was on a lot of drugs - but it gave me the desire, energy, gumption and wherewithal to swan dive into my hobbies. I still had most of my hobbies prior to the drugs - but with the drugs, I had the attention span, energy and desire to sit and read, learn, build and experiment for days at a time without sleeping. I got pretty deep into electronics and learned a hell of a lot. I've got two sheds and a room full of old electronic junk, components and tools.
Dumpster diving was another big hobby - you'd be shocked at the perfectly functional or easily fixable electronics people throw out. Desoldering the components from that stuff is where I got most of my parts. And fixing the dumpster stuff up and trading it and/or fixing stuff people brought to me was how I supported my "habits".. I was getting into some very interesting stuff by the time I decided to quit all drugs.
I wasn't like a "master" or anything - probably more like "intermediate" in the full scope of things. But people were always calling me "the scientist" and "the wizard" because I could fix about 99% of anything anyone brought to me. I remember when I first started getting to the point where I could reliably fix stuff, it was one of the greatest feelings in the world to me to be able to take a broken and/or discarded device and make it functional/useful again. And I remember the brushes in old drills and tools used to be pretty frustrating.
I quit drugs in 2016-2017ish and I still haven't regained my energy and desire to partake in my hobbies. That's the long way of saying, watching videos like this really make me want to have hobbies again lol... And I agree with your opinion on the wasteful "buy a new one" mindset, but like you said, it can be really beneficial to people who can fix stuff.

Reminds me of my 75Gal 5HP upright compressor. The unit goes for over $500 and I picked it up for $75 because it "Will fill up once and then has to cool off for 20 minutes or more". The thing did just that... got HOT... and I mean HOT after filling up to 120PSI (Rated to 150).... the thing that tipped me off to what was the issue was when he said the previous guy tried to fix it and replaced some parts and thinks maybe a pully...... It was being overdriven by about 2 times what it should not only bogging the motor but running the piston WAY faster than it should. Sure did fill it's tank quickly though... bet if I could find a way to have cooled it (Water cool maybe...lol) that would have been great to have twice the sustained flow than what it was rated for... but I bet the bearings, crank and pistons wouldn't have been happy for long.
Put the correct ratio pully on the motor and compressor and she runs for hours, doesn't overheat and produces enough air for all my air tool needs.... I was laughing since the replacement pully was gotten for free by picking up a few "Dead" compressors online until I found the parts I needed. Also got a few portable compressors to boot after rebuilding the ones that were still worth it like the one that "Doesn't do anything" and was due to a disconnected neutral wire. One mans trash is another mans gold I tell you what!

Again I need to talk about the misunderstanding regarding the discoloration of the slip rings. That is actually how it SHOULD be! The dark surface is dry lubrication! It is built with the aid of some atmospheric humidity out of the carbon brushes. Without humidity you would see a clean copper surface and plenty of carbon dust all over, until the brush is worn out, and probably starts binding in the holder. After that, there is increased resistance and possible voltage controller failure. So, please don't "clean" out the built up lubricating layer. If anything, check the free movement of the brush in the holder and of course, measure the resistance from the brush wires through the rotor.

    • @ElementalMaker
      @ElementalMaker  Před 3 lety

I didn't show all my diagnostic tests in the video, but when testing the rotor resistance through the brush connections I had a high reading of around 100ohms. Removed the brushes, and tested on the discolored area of the slip rings and it was very difficult to get a consistent reading. After cleaning the slip rings I was able to consistently get a 57ohm reading for the rotor on the slip rings. The coating on the slip rings was definitely high resistance in this case.

Chopped the frame on a VW Bug to build a dune-buggy... He also played guitar & trumpet...
Unfortunately he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's and passed away at 66yo in 1996...

Those brushes have no copper in them which is a sign of cheapo brushes. Good brushes have a copper based mix of graphite and copper( sometimes beryllium also) which makes for low resistance and longer life.

This is very timely for me. I am looking for a 9000 watt continuous usage genset that has to certified to produce "Clean Power". Clean power is defined as (taken from the welding machines manual) "NOTE:
Never operate the welder on a generator that is not certified by its manufacturer to be “clean” power, which is considered to
be less than 5% total harmonic distortion. Operating the unit on a square wave output or modified sine wave generator is strictly prohibited. Contact the manufacturer of the generator for this information. E******t does not have an “approved” list of generators. But, if the generator is not listed as clean power by its manufacturer, then operation is prohibited. Generators that do not at least meet the operating input requirements of the welder should not be used with the welders. Surge amp capability of the generator should equal or exceed the maximum inrush demand of the welder. But the surge capability should not be used as the only factor. The regular, running output of the generator should match or exceed the running or “rated” demand of the welder. Any damage done by operating the welder on a generator not specified by its manufacturer
to be “clean”, will not be covered under warranty. This also includes suspect power sources where voltage is below 208 V and
    above 250 V."
    Anyone have any recommendations?

From what I've found the rigid generators have a thd max of 5%. Running watts is only rated for 8000 though on the current model they sell. Costco has a very similar looking model for much cheaper rated for 8200w running and 10,000w starting and it also says thd less than 5%
