Firewire Seaside and Beyond Surfboard Review

- In this episode I review the Firewire Seaside and Beyond designed by Rob Machado. I believe it could go as a high-performance mid-length surfboard.
The Seaside and Beyond is a bigger version of the Seaside. It has a flat rocker, small lift in the tail, a few concaves on the bottom, plenty of foam in the chest area which allow you to have a good paddle speed, get into the waves early especially in the crowded lineup and fly through the sections with a glide.
I’m an intermediate surfer who lives in New York and surfs beach breaks. We mostly get short period swells 6-8 sec, medium period swells occasionally from low pressures going off the coast and long period swells during Atlantic Hurricane Season which runs from June-November
This season has been really active. I got to surf the board in all conditions from 1 up to 8 foot in weak/mushy/semi-clean/clean conditions with Machado’s FCS2 Quad set up which was designed specifically for the Seaside model.
I was really impressed at how the board works with the feelings of riding a shortboard.
When the waves are weak and mushy, I prefer to surf it as a twin. I just take out the trailer fins and leave semi-keels in. I’m getting more speed, longer rides that I usually complete with one maneuver like a foam climb.
When the conditions are close to perfect (3-5 ft waves with open face), I’m able to do more maneuvers such as cutbacks pairing with the floater, re-entry closeout or foam climb.
If you’re looking for a fun board that would work in all conditions with a performance feel of a shortboard, then this is the one.

Great review. Excellent showing different conditions and commenting on them. Not sure who films you surfing but congrats to them too. I have a 9'1 that I don't ride anymore and have been thinking about swapping it with this board.

Brought a TimberTec 6’10 because of people saying of dent’s etc..Fell’s heavier on land but really responsive in water…I ride longboards(9’2)&Seaside(5’7)..Loving it..Keeping them all as sometimes I want to hit a wave(5’7) gives me that & other time’s I want to cruise.

Thanks man! your videos are helping a lot to make a decision. I'm getting either a 6'8 or a 7'. I've surfed boards from 5'11 to 7'6, so I don't mind going bigger, just want to make sure I catch a lot of waves with the Seaside & Beyond but be able to make turns easily. I'm guessing I will still be able to catch a lot with the 6'8 compared to the 7', leaning towards the smaller one after your vid.
Thanks for watching! Yes, 6'8" will def improve the wave count. I did not notice a huge difference in terms of paddling and the ability to catch waves.
Another great mid length that I’ve had so much fun on is the holy moli from arakawa. It’s very well made, and more high performance than the ci mid!
Nice!!! I’ll look it up. The CI Mid has a better hold from shoulder high and up when it’s setup with the side bites. You can draw different/longer lines😁
Yt randomly recommended this channel. Great content! Any thoughts on testing locally shaped boards? Christenson isn't local to you but I think you would like the christenson twin fish and his midlengths like the flat tracker.

Hi Richard! Thank you for watching! Hands down Seaside and Beyond! CI Mid has a touch more glide over beyond. To get more performance with less effort, I’d go with the SS&B. Hope this helps!

I am 5' 9" 180lbs and surfing a 6' 8" Seaside and Beyond, the size and volume work well for me. I have gained a new appreciation for it lately as the winter waves and sand bars changed the break to be a bit softer, but the waves still have size to them! It helps you get in the wave that tad bit earlier to really make the most of the surf/wave. I also recently got 6' 10" Christenson Huntsman - single fin egg, and I really like this board, just the way it flows. Then hoping on the SS&B - you recognize the inherent performance that this board has.

Nice video mate, these are great boards however l believe the LFT construction is not strong enough for this style of board, mine snapped within 8 months of owning it, I’ll probably get another one but in timber tech.
I agree, but tbh, it could be a bad batch. I have a friend whose Seaside broke in half when it hit the wooden pile on 1 ft day and one with baked potatoes (timbertek). 2 other friends own in lft it for a year and they are good so far besides hairline cracks here and there. Hope Timbertek works better for you🤙🏼🤙🏼🤙🏼

Nice review thanks! Curious why you recommend the Timbertek construction. Is this for sustainability reasons, durability or performance? Or maybe a combination of these?
Hi David! Thank you for your feedback. It's for durability reasons. I didn't try SSB in Timbertek but from what I heard, it's nearly the same however the LFT version will have better flex from nose to tail. Again you will likely feel that better when the conditions are ideal :) Hope this helps!

I’m currently working on the Glazer review and planning on adding some thoughts of the Seaside.
So which do you like better, Big Baron or Seaside Beyond? My waves here are turning more south and I need a mid now. I’ve been surfing seaside, glazer, and lost RNF 96 (which is hands down my favorite). I ride a 5’7 in the machado’s and 5’8 (32L) in the Lost. I was kinda thinking 6’8 Big Baron or 6’8 Seaside and Beyond. Sounds like the Seaside Beyond gives you the two options, quad or twin. The BB only as a twin. I think I saw there’s a large twin fin made specifically for BB with medium rake. And there’s also a keel made for it. Can’t recall the name. Any thoughts? I know you said that SB and BB were both your favorites!! Ha ha.
Hey Mike! I like to ride the twin fins lately.. getting more speed and fun tail release. If I roughly compare two boards.. the Big Baron would ride closer to a shortboard, it's fast/responsive, it doesn't feel bulky compared to Beyond (the rails are very foiled down). It paddles much faster than Beyond even it has 2 liters of volume less. I love Akila Twin Fin Set for most conditions (more upright template). I would only use the keels on smaller/crappy days. I heard MR twin fin set works great too for most conditions. The downside of the BB is the glass job. It's very light and fragile. You will get crazy foot impressions on the deck. Beyond comes in LFT and it does get some hairline cracks here and there.. All my friends who got the Beyond 3 years ago in LFT.. still have it. Beyond works as a twin but only when it's small 1-2 ft.. the board doesn't hold it when it goes bigger.. you lose traction and the tail gives up. Beyond would suit more beginners transitioning from the longboard and wanted to learn turns and stuff like that but if you are on a shortboard for a while then this transition to BB will be seamless. Hope this helps!

I’m looking for a small wave summer board that can surf like a shortboard when it’s good and like a longboard, where I can stand on the nose a bit if I have to,to keep speed. It was small today and I surfed my 5’7. So I guess I’m looking for flatter days when it’s small and I really don’t want to take out a 9’ like everyone else. The wave I surf can get ledgy on the take off. When it’s big it’s pretty pitty and heavy. But when it’s small it’s like a steep quick drop off the take with some punch, to a steep face that flattens out very fast to mushy, before it gets steeper again in another shallow section. I’m so torn. I’ve been on my twin too and like it best. More speed, not forced into pocket.
Yuri what is opinion on S&B in Timbertek? Is this better than LFT? How Timbertek would affect surfing this surfboard?
Michael, I think it's better in some ways. In general Timbertek is the most ding resistant and also very sturdy against foot impressions but it's going to feel the stiffest under your feet. It suits better for grovelers like FW Baked Potato. I think there is a reason why Rob initially has chosen an LFT construction which provides speed, responsiveness and also flowing feel. Great review! It helps so much.. Yesterday i was surfing my new 6´10" S & B Timbertek with fcs machado fins for first time . It was a funny session on a 1ft waves and onshore wind. My long board was a 5´10¨dominator but I used to surf a 5´5" baked potato timbertek for wide range of waves an i love that board. All shortboards. So I found my new S & B a bit heavy .. I thing TT is heavier than a LFT.. I like how it generate a lot of speed paddeling and stability on take offs . Good speed on flat sections, turns well but you have to push over the tail.. Im happy but I must get used to the more weight..😅 What about use it as a twin fin? Thanks and cheers!
Hey man! Yeah, that's the impression I got from people who got S&B in Timbertek. My buddy moved down to LFT and now he's pretty happy with it. When you get a chance, I would consider 6'8" S&B. So far, it's the best high performance mid length IMO. The glass job is not that great but it makes the board to be very light, responsive without corky feel :) The S&B is pretty fun on small "clean/semi clean" days. It will get you more freedom and speed. The tail will get skatey but I find it really fun to swing the board around with less effort. I wouldn't do it on 2ft+ days as the board loses control no matter what fins you use.. the fin boxes for side fins are way up for a twinny in general. Hope this helps! Cheers!

I was considering a TT sb in 6’10 as a beginner transition board but i hoped it would be more versatile. You dont think it would be worth it in surf over 2ft!?

Hi Frewuill, yes, I can. There is not much volume up in the nose, so it does duck dive and goes through the face fine (6’8” based on my current weight - 155 lbs). The 7’0 will be harder to duck dive for me right now. Hope that helps!

Great review. I know you’ve owned both a 7’0” and 6’8”. I’m an average surfer looking work on my turns and flow. Wanted something in the mid length range. I’m 5’6” 150-155lbs. Surf mostly beach break on the east coast as well in Mass. Any thoughts on which length you’d recommend?

Were the cracked repairs hard to fix?
What do you think of LFT vs Timbertek? Thinking of the 6’10 TT as a 6’1 165 lbs. kind of prefer the better durability and also more beginner.
I've heard from my friend that the Timbertek is pretty beefy. He was pretty happy after he switched to LFT. I think if you go with the 7'0" LFT you should be good. You won't really win a lot in terms of durability.. the LFT one will start yellowing after 6-8 months no matter where you keep it. The timbertek one will keep it's color though. Hope this helps!

@@mohitsc if your pop up is good and you can catch waves on your own, you will be fine on the 7’0 beyond… just work on your positioning and not force it much.

Do you think a 7’4 would be too big for you? I’m about the same size and weight as you a couple of notches below your skill level, more beginner/intermediate, 40 year old. Difficult to find stock of a shorter one.

I did see that video, great review and board but I live out in Vietnam so finding boards from smaller shapers like that is impossible. I have to get boards from big name shapers like CI, FireWire, Christenson, Lost, Chili, and I have to go to Bali to buy it, which I plan on doing sometime next year.
Or I could buy a a board from a local shaper for about half the cost but then I’m not too sure how those boards will ride, would have to just go off of template, size/volume, and feel under the arm.
I’ve narrowed down what I want to a CI Mid or Water Hog. A Seaside and beyond. Christenson C-Bucket, Long Phish or Ultra Tracker. Would ideally get two boards as I won’t be able to make it back to Bali anytime soon. Or a locally made board in which case I could buy more since it’ll be cheaper.
Anyway, thanks again for the tip! Any thoughts on a christenson boards or any other of my brand options? My friend back home in California says they’re really popular at the moment, he makes a variety of mid lengths. He even watches your channel and coincidentally told me to watch your channel (though I already had been) to get tips on boards and surfing since he said my style and way of surfing is similar to yours :)
Also I mainly surf beach breaks and occasionally point breaks out here in Vietnam. My favorite wave size is 3-4ft. If it’s a point break going bigger is nice though.
@@ren1818ren It depends on what you like.. Generally speaking, it's very personal. I've only surfed Christensen Surfer Rosa Mid length 7'0". It was fine nothing extraordinary. I would prefer to surf it in shorter size in 3-5 ft waves. Sometimes you don't have to really go for the big brands to find the best board. The Seaside and Beyond would definitely feel special compared to CI Mid which would feel like a solid single fin mid length with 2+1 setup that can handle big waves very easy and give you more stability and hold. I would go for the 7'0" if you want to cruise down the line and not really gonna surf it as a shortboard. The Seaside and Beyond wants you to surf it as a shortboard. You can swing it around much easier. Speaking of Christensen surfboards.. they do look nice, glassing and stuff but I'm personally not into skull logo. I personally love Album Surfboard. They are very friendly and suits more every day surfer. Hope this helps!

@@SkipperSurfReview nice ! i like the 7.0 but its super hard for me (5'11, 165 lbs) when its hollow, also i find it very hard to duck dive so i feel very unsafe on it when the sets are coming and theres people around... how much better is the 6'8 in those aspects in your opinion ?
@@KC-ro9ro 6’8” will feel less buoyant for sure. Those 5 liters will make the difference but you will still have to work hard to duck dive it. The easiest board to duck dive in 6’8” size was JS Big Baron for me. I reviewed it this year. It’s very thin and handles big wave’s pretty well however it’s a twin fin. You may want to consider it.
