Firewire Seaside and Beyond Surfboard review

- Finally getting around to reviewing the Seaside and Beyond. Mine is the 6'8" x 20 3/4" x 2 5/8" coming in at 40.9L.
The board is great for getting in early and surprisingly maneuverable for how big it is for me. I normally ride between 25 and 28 liters with my grovelers ranging from 29 to 33. So this board is well "Beyond" (pun intended) my liter range.
I don't think this fills any gaps in my quiver but it could in yours. Although the Twice Baked 5'3 is my groveler, I had some difficulty with it on bigger waves. This board even though it is 1.5' taller and roughly 7 liters more, it handles bigger waves better. The only issue is duck diving. I can't do it.

You commentary is spot on. I chose the 6'10 for it's durability. I wish they had both sets in timbertek because I would definitely prefer the 7'0 or 6'8 specs. Anyway, this board is fantastic. I does need to be ridden with long drawn out turns in mind and it will take a few waves to learn how far to put your back foot because it turns nothing like a seaside. Once you get that dialed in, it's such a blast to ride, especially in shoulder to a foot overhead waves where you can get it early, get in front of the wave, pull a nice drawn out cutback, set your line again, and carve to your hearts content. Crazy fast board too!
Something to add: the 2nd set that they release, the 6.10", 7'2", and the 7'6", not only suit beginners and intermediates better, but also suit bigger surfers better. Also, the second set was released a year later. I think based on feedback.
Yeww! love the video. You surf like rob my friend! I've been waiting for my 6'8 for months now. Hopefully will arrive soon! Riding my 5'7 seaside has been fun but can use the extra length for the crowded lineups here in LA.

This is my first board ever and I am having a blast learning on it! The right balance of challenge and comfort. So fast and fun!
In the video I said my brother bought it for me. So glad he did because it is a board I would never have bought myself. Goes to show, sometimes you have to try new things. I am definitely sold on this board.
Nice floaters, they are one of my favorite things about riding a bigger board. Round house cut backs are the other. The volume and planing surface just pops off the white water and you come out of it with speed rather than getting caught up in it like you would with a short board.
I bought a 6'8" and got to ride it in head high barreling waves the same day, and I am now questioning why I never bought this board the day it hit the shelf haha.. game changer for sure!!
I know. Like I mentioned in the video, I don't think I would have even bought it if not for my brother buying it for me. But so glad I have it now. BTW, are you a shortboarder normally or long boarder?

Hey Thomye, great review. Been eyeing this board for awhile now. Went to HSS today and they only had the Timbertek version. Although they did have a cool looking 5'4" green tint Seaside that was reaching out to me. At 62 I currently ride a blue 6'8"Takayama Howard Mini that I've had a few years and looking for a change. I'm typically at T20 Bolsa........Jeff

boards are so slim pickings right now. You no longer have time to think about it, you have to get it or wait another 6 months to a year. crazy
I like to look at your reviews, have subscribed to your channel. I usually surf longboards, 9'0-9'4, thinking about getting a long fish. That's how I became aware of your channel. It is interesting to see what someone thinks about longer boards that usually surf small boards. 6'8 is easier to turn than a 7'0, for example. If I get shorter now, Seasiders and beyond, my point of view will be different. I will first have to look, just sit on the board without falling over in the water😄 I will also have to get faster with my takeoff, smaller board, less time. Maybe you will test a high performance longboard, low rocker and in 9'0. Good job, keep it up🤙🏻
I know. it is so relative what is short vs long. I used to think 6'4 was too long. but then to others, 8'0 is too short. perspective is so interesting when it comes to surfing. Even wave shape and size.

Great review Thomye! Now I know why my 7'2" has more volume than the LFT 7'4". I made the right choice, although it was the only one in the sop anyway. Great surfing as always, nice waves too! :)

me too, seaside all the way. but, so glad my brother got me this board because I would never have bought it for myself. not in my wheelhouse. But now that I have it, I will certainly use it more.... but only when it is big and swamped.

Nice! I love my 7'0 S&B but I'm 6'0 165#; similar experience to yours, except I have explored groveling even in tiny waves and had a lot of fun... If not quite as much as on my thick/wide 6' fish
I did have a video in some small waves but tossed it before starting this channel. Definitely still goes but you are right, much better options out there.

Sweet review man! I just picked this board up. I’m 6 foot 175. Hopefully it’s the right size for me! I have the 7”4 timbertek version. Love it so much wanted something smaller and lighter.
I bought a 7'4 and I'm 6'3, it feels like it rides itself. As a beginner I'm just able to pop up on days where everyone else is on 8 ft plus and it kinda takes hold and goes "don't worry man I got you" and allow me to experiment, gives me a wobble when I'm off balance just to let me know where my old 2nd hand mactavish micro would have just spat me off. I'm hoping to be able to ride it the way rob machado built it to be ridden... one day! I surf on tge South Coast of England so I need this board 😂

Footage looks great...love the ships in the back ground all the time ...looks like star destroyers from star wars or something...does this spot backwash alot? do you get direct swells or side swell?
Bolsa does backwash. Hasn't been bad lately, knock on wood. I have seen it so bad that once I caught a wave going out, but it is rare. As for swell direction, it takes everything. Best when it is a combo but rare to see it completely flat unless small and super high tide. Even then, I have wavestormed shore break.
What a swell to trial out that bad boy ....... Looks like the best chemistry for you vs. your other boards!
it was definitely good but I took out my glazer after when the tide dropped and had some really good backhand waves. 3 turns. I wish the soloshot's battery was better. :( no footage of glazer in these waves.

@@michaelbargo7866 soloshot 3. Not sure what you are asking regarding settings. The tracking starts out centered but if I surf south of the camera, in about 30 minutes, it moves me to the left of the frame slowly. After about an hour, I am totally out of frame. I get out and move the camera which then restarts the calibration. And yes, I leave it on the beach. But I think it would depend on the beach though.

@@ThePokersurfer Almost the same for me. I still put the Seaside on top, then the glazer, then the Twice Baked/Baked Potato. But the only reason I put the Seaside over the Glazer is that my waves are more suited for the Seaside 80% of the time.
Great review. I've been thinking about the SSB and the Sunday as my next board. Transitioning from a 7' 56L foamy and ride mostly small 2-5ft beach breaks when I started 2 years ago. Thinking of getting the 7'3 Sunday as it's closest in terms of volume to what I'm used to and I want to keep surfing small waves. I'm 70kg, 5'10. What do you think ?
And I hope to be surfing like you at 50!
if you are aiming for the same volume, catching waves will be just as good if not better. Better because a hard board has less drag. The board will surf better tool. I think you can go with a 7' and be fine too. The only thing that you lose really is width. I think the foamy will be wider. that translates to a little more stability. but if you are at the stage of wanting more, that is a good upgrade.
Thanks for the great informative reviews! I have a 7'3 Sunday and it feels bit too floaty for anything over 3', but it's great for mushy beach break waves at Trails. I'm considering the 6'8 Sunday for better waves, but also the SSB in a 7'0. I'm 185lbs and 5'10. What are your thoughts on the 6'8 Sunday vs a 7'0 SSB for better waves at Church or Middles? Thank you for your time!
I think both have the advantages. The Sunday will have a lot more versatility and because of the rounded pin I think it would turn and carve a little better. The seaside beyond has the easier user friendly fin setup (quad). I think the Sunday has a mid-length feel and vibe too vs fishy. But you can't go wrong either way in my opinion.
I'm considering picking up the 7'2 in Timbertek used. I'm 6'0 and 210# so 40L is around my minimum volume and this looks fun
I love it and bigger but softer waves. Big open faces if you can get them. I don't surf mine much because our waves don't get that way too often.
I’m a fan of Machado boards and own about all of them. His boards seem to be more aimed at normal surfers in normal waves.
I see him sometimes at Cardiff, cool dude.
I've seen him in person only once, other than events, and that was at Camp Shred when I demo'd the seaside. it was cool seeing him, I wanted to get a photo with him but he was busy with like 20 people. hopefully someday.
Yes I agree about your statement, his boards being aimed at normal surfers. More specifically, I think I know exactly why though. I think it has to do with the wide point being in front of the front foot. Most performance boards, the wide point is usually just behind the front foot which makes them actually sensitive, but harder to surf. I noticed this with my recent Dominator 2 review. that dom2 is a 5'4 (although not a performance board) I didn't like the way it felt. my favorite dom was the 5'8. At that length, the wide point is at my front foot. I prefer it to be in front but the issue is, the dom1 and dom2 both are designed with wide point back from center. So, if I wanted a dom/dom2 with the wide point in front of my front foot, it would have to be a 5'10 or 6'0. At that length, it is too much swing weight so it feels heavy.
I think the reason why so many intermediate or bigger surfers lived the Dom 1 was because they usually rode the board longer than I would. So, they ended up with wide point in front of their front foot. Making the board user friendly.
I guess I could be totally wrong and it's just coincidence that all my favorite boards are wide point above my front foot, even the seaside beyond. But that is my hunch. In fact, I'm going to test it by getting a normal performance board, Sharpeye HT2 or Storms, but in 5'9 or 5'10. I'll have to see where the wide point is.

I haven't tried it but now have to consider it. I just surfed my Sunday and that board is so fun as a Twin. I would suspect the Beyond would go good too but maybe the front fin box is too far forward. I'll try it and possibly post a vid. thanks for the idea.

I would like also to buy one and maybe you can help me. I weight 90kg and my level of surfing is intermediate-low (it means Im able to catch green waves and generate speed but no so good making turns)
Im hesitating between 6’10 (47,2l) and 7’2 (52,2l). Based on your experience. Which one would you recomend me?

What board are you on now out of curiosity. I would say do the 7'2 because I am guessing you are around 6' tall. At that stage, more is better than less waves and the few more liters should not affect your turns. I am hoping to do a turns video soon.
Great review :) I did not get through all comments, but I was wondering if you can ride it as a twinnie? Its in the mix for my to purchase for european mellow conditions (also thinking sunday, gready beaver)

that is a good question. I have not tried it as a twin but I'd imagine it would work but it would be a twin with its fins moved forward. I'll have to test that just to answer this question. :)
Helpful review! I’m about same height/weight and wondering if you’re able to duck dive deep enough for medium to larger days or do you navigate more like a long board to get out the back...
small to medium yes, not bigger waves. all the width and volume is forward so when I duck dive, i have to reach forward, pull the board back and dive the nose. I really do wish they had a 6'6 version at about 36L, that would be perfect.

@@jmdanzig the 6'8 surfs way better than I would have thought. some of my best waves, I didn't get on film which really sucks. I think if I committed a bit of time, I could really move this thing around and learn it. I am considering possibly reviewing the CI Mid 6'6 which is 38L I think. but at $945, makes me really think hard about it.
Great review. I was looking at getting the 6'8" too but I was hoping I could duck dive it. I'm 5'10 160. I noticed in the description you said you can't duck dive it...I'm not sure what your ht/wt is...but at 5'10 160 do you think it'd be possible for me to duck dive?
I am 5'8 145 lbs at my heaviest. I can sort of duck it. Small waves but not when it gets big. My brother who is 155 does a better job of duck diving my 6'8. You should be fine if you have good technique.

What camera setup did you use? Great review and footage.
I used a Soloshot3 x65. It's a great tool not only for the channel but also for self improvement. At first it was a hassle to set up since the process takes 10 minutes. I used to see waves pumping and was too impatient. But cuz of the channel I have been forcing myself to set it up. I think in the last year and a half, I have slowly been improving. It definitely allows me to see what i'm doing right and what I'm doing wrong. Although fixing it entirely another issue. at 52, that old dog new tricks is a huge factor. :)
Just. Bought one i think its the long rail from the waist to the tail, i think this is a good board to further ones skills

I think it depends on how big and how steep. the board is capable but it would get challenging so someone like my skill level might have difficulty charging Fiji with a Seaside and beyond. But I'm certain Machado could probably handle teahupoo. Personally I like the seaside and Beyond for bigger fatter / softer waves, not necessarily steeper. I think if it got bigger and steeper, I would want a regular performance board or a step up performance board.
Where did you place your tail pad? Does the block place your foot between the fins?
I placed the pad as far back as it will go. It puts my foot over the back fins.
Great review, wondering if you ever put a ruler on it to get the dimensions?
thanks. I've never put a ruler to it, I guess I trust the dims they say it is. I would if I thought they were really off. For the most part, I notice that firewires get the sizing of the blanks almost identical but sometimes there is variation in glassing. I've held two of the same boards in a shop and one would be lighter in weight.
How is the padding on this board with the LFT vs a standard poly resin board like a Christensen C-Bucket?
i have not ridden a Christensen C-Bucket so I can't comapre but LFT is similar to poly so provided it is similar in liters, I would suspect the paddle would be similar. Rocker has to be similar too but for the most part, similar.
Hi! What fins did you have on the board and how do you feel changes could impact performance? (Particularly va turning)
I ran the Machado quads. Didn't try with anything else but if I ran a more pivot quad, it would have loosened it up.
Thomye nice surfing and videos. Why strictly firewire when u have world class shapers in ur backyard. Eric Christensen, Tim stamps etc.?
I do have an answer for that but it is quite a long answer. I will do a video of it as part of my quiver video or separate. But it's not exclusive. I have sharpeye boards. Also, one of my buddies loves EC boards, probably orders two a year from the guy and he is nice enough to let me try them but none of them work for me. I do love the way they look I just hate the way they ride. I think it is my very heavy front footedness, cuz my buddy rips on them.
having said that, I don't like all Firewires either. so far, Machado boards are working for me but I also know that his early boards probably wouldn't. such as the moonbeam, almond butter, and the midas. just the way he looks on them, I can tell they wouldn't feel right for me.
Anyways, as a short as i can make the answer, spoiler for the video, it has to do with broken board, caved in decks, clarke foam going out of business, etc. Just a combination of things.

So Thomye, I was curious about something you said about filming in one of your videos. You said the camera didn't track you on one of the waves or it tracked you late. So what's up that, do you have a camera set up that'll allow you to video you and your movement? I'm very curious as to everyone I know surfs and never wants to miss out on the waves. I'd like to capture my surfing to help me with my style and of course finish maneuvers if fall on. Also, I surf midlengths with high performance and style. As I love the style of midlength surfing more than the short boards these days maybe I can help end the trend of fatter, shorter volume game. Not to sound egotistical but I'm 49 and I've been surfing 35 years. Anyway, what's up with your camera deal? I guess I could Google it, but more interested in the conversation. so i use a camera called the Soloshot. it is made up of two parts, the base and a remote called a tag. Both connect to a gps signal. The two then communicate using a radio signal so that the base know relative to itself, where the tag is. It is a nifty device and I generally love it, but on occasion, it does not track. Either GPS info isn't accurate or it can't get a signal at all. I have had both happen before but the most common issue seems to be accuracy. The base will capture my video but I'll be way off to the side or sometime I'm even off the screen. It's expensive, I think $799, and you will have to be comfortable leaving it on the beach while your surf. The unit can't really be used if it is stolen since it is serialized and needs internet to update and do other things. Regardless, the thief won't know that so it is a risk.
If you surf a busy beach, you can just set it up next to a family or beach goer and ask them to keep an eye on it. Anyways, google soloshot, I personally think it is one of the best tools to have for surfing 2nd to a personal videographer. :)

Having equipment like that I could def get some footage I never seem to time my surf right with those guys We're always either at different breaks, or coming and going Do you ever make it to Florida? We're actually planning a family (of 3) cross country trip next year for me and my wife's 50th. Gonna be coming through your neck of the woods. Not sure when just yet but maybe we could hook up for a surf or something.

LOL that's funny that you knew what it was. I was looking for a ruler and in fact bought one but it was so sharp on the edges that it kept scraping the glass off. decided to use the nice rounded rail instead. :)

I also picked up a used but perfect condition 5’7 Chumlee (slightly yellowed) ... that board is amazing!
Mate you are 66kg and I was 66 kg back when I was 12 years old. Is that Cottons you're riding there? Should put channels in these instead of massive concave. The vee is nice behind the fins. Too much taper going down to the tail. Heavier guys need foam. Super brand surfboards are guilty of this too (as are many others).
no, not Cottons although it looked very similar on this day. It's a beach break up near Huntington Beach.
yeah, I used to weigh close to around 73kg when I worked out and then blew up to 80kg when my wife and I had our fist kid. Sympathy weight gain I guess. After wearing large wetsuits, surfing bigger boards, I decided enough was enough and lost all my weight. Surfing much better though these days. :) at least better than when i was 80kg.
What are your thoughts on 7’0 Firewire Mid 6 vs 6’8” S & B
I really like both. if you look at the videos of the two, the Mid6 actually rides closer to a normal surfboard while the S&B surfed straighter lines with longer curves. drawn out like a fish would. I think I have gotten better on longer boards so i'll have to try again on the S&B. so if you like the feel of a fish, got with S&B otherwise if you surf more conventional boards, then go Mid6
That 9:20 wave was a closeout, but dang, much more solid that the other small stuff.
it's scary packing a big closeout barrel on a big board. I don't ever think about it on a smaller board but when the board is bigger, I keep thinking the board is going t hit me on the head. But that day was perfect for the S&B

@@ThomyeSurfs I was wing foiling at Ka'a Point in the waves, on Maui. These were my stomping grounds, kiteboarding every day in the early 2000s. Anyway, I fell in and the leash brought the board back to me quick and the back of the mast hit me below my left eye and cut me deep. It ruined the next 2 weeks of wind and waves. So, first lesson is... if you get separated from the board in the waves, roll yourself into a ball and cover your face with your arms. A cut to the body isn't nearly as bad as a cut to the face.
Sunday or seaside and beyond? Same length. Which board would you choose?
At the same length, I would do the S&B for performance and the Sunday for grovel. At the same volume, then I would go Sunday cuz it would be 8" shorter, so it would perform much better for me.
after surfing the seaside this thing feels like a log, found the timber tech to be too heavy and hard too move
definitely. I wish they made a 6'4 version around the 34L mark. the 6'8 at 38 is just a tad long for me at my weight.

yeah, I should do that soon since I already have the footage. I think that is the hardest part to be honest, is going back and editing and collecting the footage. I wasn't organizing in the beginning. But thanks for the reminder. I have the Seaside, GoFish, Modern2, and Neckbeard2 that all need to get done. Almost done with Neckbeard2, just need a day or two more of surf know understand the board.

Can you duck dive this board easily??
i would say the 6'8 at 40L is just barely past my limit. if the waves go big and consistent, I would likely drown. haha 38 is my limit which is my 6'0 sunday. I can duckdive it but not very deep. Not south swell 16 seconds deep. Anyways, also consider that i'm 140lbs these days. the liter weight ratio for this particular board for me is .286. you can multiply that against your weight and get the liters of your max. DISCLAIMER: this is barring technique. I have seen longboard pros duckdive way over this ratio just cuz of good technique. but as far as standard shortboard duckdive, .286 is about max. hope that makes sense.
your weight and size and what your rode so important, you would be surprised how many guys that review leave that to the end or don't really even say

yeah, that one was one of the first videos so I was learning my editing tool. I definitely made it too loud. I do like some really low level background noise but for sure that was loud and annoying. thanks for the feedback.

Did you see FireWire is doing a “re” release of the seaside and beyond and the Sunday?
yeah, I just saw the announcement but didn't even realize it was unreleased. LOL I was really confused. Did they discontinue it some time ago?
@@ThomyeSurfsDon’t think so, both have been on sale. I’m wondering if it’s a redesign or something. Both the S&B and the Sunday are getting re releases.
Edit: actually I noticed some months back that Robs name isn’t on the FireWire site anymore. His boards are there, but he doesn’t have his section anymore..thought it was weird.
