Crimping JST-XHP, DuPont & JST-SM connectors PROPERLY & EASILY!

- In this video I attempt to show you clearly, and easily (and most importantly) how to properly crimp various connectors. Mind you, you still have to practice before being able to do it in a matter of seconds, so don't get discouraged if you don't grasp it right away.

Tools used:
*IWISS SN-28B
*IWISS IWS-3220M
Both tools can be found on Amazon. Early in the video I start to explain about the pair of locking clamps (hemostats) I use to help, but never actually got around to actually use them. These can be purchased on Amazon or at Harbor Frieght for about $3. Alternatives include the pair of C.H.P. precision needle nose pliers that you see me use in the video. Any questions feel free to ask, I'm open to productive comments and feedback.

Ahhh... if I had only found this video yesterday, BEFORE I ordered the IWISS SN-28B because Amazon said it could crimp JST-XHP connectors.

This is the 4th video on crimping JST-SM connectors I've watched and it's the first one that has explained and demonstrated the proper technique, including how to properly insert the crimped wire into the connector afterwards. Thank you! I'm building connections for a 3D printer and I'm new to wiring and want to make sure I don't create a fire hazard in my own home.

Finally I understand how to properly use my SN-28B crimper. Thank you!!!! I never knew it was a 2-step process for the same connection. I just tried one and it worked perfectly the first time. Just amazing.
Simply the best instructional video on crimping JST and DuPont. I rarely do these types of connections but when I do I always refer back to this video. Very clear and spot on information. I was destroying all of my crimps until I watched this and learned your tools and techniques. This continues to be one of the most useful videos I have seen on YT. I don't agree. The rambling repeating of information seems very unprepared. Also, the (extremely) slow pace and the ridiculous camera work was off-putting to me.
Like so many others who have commented here already, this is the first video I've found to properly explain how to use the SN-28B crimper. I'm using JST-SM connectors on my ebike wiring and am trying to rewire hall connectors and just mangled yet another connector using poor technique. I was so tilted I decided to see if I could find a video to show me what I was doing wrong or how to do things properly and yours is perfect.

Thank you for this video, it really has helped me with my crimping. You are an excellent instructor for sure.
The most important thing to mention is the SIZE of the crimping tool ! I bought one 3 years ago and I never crimped any connectors properly however hard I tried. In fact I stressed everytime I needed to crimp I have just bought a new crimping tool for 0.08 to 0.5 mm (SN-01BM) and now I am a champion crimper with no effort whatsoever. For JST I use the smaller of the two slots. NB: my previous crimping tool was for 0.1 to 1 mm (SN-28B) and had slots for 0.25, 0.5 and 1.0 mm but the jaws were way too wide and the terminal got damaged. Good crimping to all !
Noticed that the bigger size is suitable for Dupont as the pin is longer (as shown 18 minutes into the video). Pity I never use Dupont.
YES I have the Hemostats and I love, love, love my pair that are the type where the nose of the tool is rounded over. I also have a pair that are straight like yours. But the rounded over or angled version just works so much betterfor getting into tight places they just work better. I even use they to hold onto 3mm nuts when tightening screws that are located in tight places or for picking up a nut or screw that I dropped.
I'm so glad I found this video! I was running into the connector barely fitting and ultimately crushing and almost going to design and have laser cut my own thinner crimp plates. The 3220M will take care of that for me. Thank you!

As I watched this, I had a couple of thoughts. For female DuPont's, one could temporarily put a pin into it while positioning it. Also, it occurs to me that once one got the hang of it, one could do the 1st step "pre crimp" (before inserting wires) on a bunch of connectors, making the whole process a little more efficient. Thanks for the vid.

I bought IWISS SN-2549 and it has thinner part on the jaws which makes it possible to crimp jst connectors

Helpful man. I've had the same iwiss SN-28B I was using for duponts but it was brutal doing thr JST-XHPs. Those connectors can be handy for proto boards for things like ESP32 and 8266s. But, I wanted some jst-sm to just have a safer connection for things like going between two boxes say. So, I ordered the IWS- 3220M like you have thinking they would be better for both connector types. Turns out like your video, the 28b is much better for the jst-sm. So yea... glad I found your video.
I'm building a dinosaur night light for my grandson using a ESP8266 (D1 mini) microcontroller and have it and power coming in to a box and then the actual dinosaur light secured on top of the box. It's only 5v to the ws8212 neopixel LEDS in the light but, duponts disconnect easily and yea... don't want a crawling kid to suck on 5v lol. At least the SM connectors lock...right...lol.

I use that SN-28B crimper for all of them... it works good enough but that other crimper does look better bc it's thinner. just ordered one for the JSTXH bc you're right, they're a pain in the ass
Very good crimping video. Very through. Only criticism would be to put time markers in. I know we all need ore patients now a days, but I was looking for something specific and had issues finding it due to structure of video (how information was layer out).

So you can't use the narrower blue parallel jaws crimper on Dupont connectors?

I do a lot of research for a lot of different products. So I do my home work. But... Some times it is nice just to buy a product like a crimping tool or wire stripper tool that someone else has already tested. So I would have liked in this case a affiliated link. YES, most of the time I use a video just to help with my own research. also I am making wires for my 3D printer and I bought the connectors. I did not realize that I needed a Crimping tool. Also I now the connectors on site but don't know the Name for them. Which makes looking for the correct tool even harder.
I actually lost a job because I had a hard time crimping connector pins on.The connectors I had to crimp are mollex brand connectors
Don`t twist the wires, as the blades of the crimp wafer may not penetrate the wiring correctly.

You are so right about the larger crimper. I bought a set on Amazon that came with AWG26-20. I went through about 8 or nine female pin connectors before I was able to correctly crimp it to the wire. I had to first use tweezers to pre-crimp the connector, then finish VERY carefully with the crimper.
Question: The IWS-3220 mentioned in your video. The closest I found was Micro Connector Pin Crimping Tool, Yangoutool Micro Ratcheting Crimper 32-20AWG for D-Sub,Open Barrel suits Molex,JST,JAE - is that the same tool as the IWISS IWS-3220M?
Based on looking at it, it appears to be the same tool. It's probably just a different brand associated with it, they change the color of the handles, etc. But it looks like it'd work fine.

As far as I'm aware of, no. I'm personally a fan of tools specifically meant for a single task. In my experience any time you try to combine too many tools into one, it never works well for any of the things it claims to do.
Yes there is, it is the Preciva PR-3254 available on Amazon. It also does the Dupont better because unlike with the JST, the wings that hold the isolation should not bite into the isolation but fold around it. If you just crimp JST connectors than the SN-01BM is better than both crimpers in this video
