  • the economy car market used to be mainly dominated by the Japanese; today, companies such as Hyundai are taking huge strides and matching, if not exceeding, their Japanese rivals. Today I take a look at the 2016 Sonata, and give my feedback as to why I believe it's better than its Japanese competitors.

Great review of the Sonata. Nice to have a bit of variety. We don't get it in the UK but Hyundai and Kia are very popular here. My 2014 Hyundai Tucson (IX35) has been very dependable, and I'm considering the new Kona as a replacement.

      @AndrewKNI Před 4 lety

@@MrPangulo007 Yes, it's strange. As Scotty Kilmer says you need to check where a car is made. I don't know about American Hyundai cars but mine was made in Slovakia in Europe. Build standards in Europe tend to be built to fairly high standards. I did change my ix35 and bought a slightly used Tucson. 16 months later and its proved 100% reliable and is sturdily made. Granted the miles are low, and it's not powerful, but for now it does the job.

The Sonata is a nice car but it’s nowhere near as sharp or engaging to drive as an Accord or a Mazda 6. Also, no manual transmission option is a bummer if you’re one of the very few who cares about that sort of thing. I chose the Mazda 6 because it’s more fun to drive and I wanted a manual transmission.

    • @AutoAutopsy

By engaging what do you mean? I recently got a new engine in my 2011 sonata and the guy was Japanese mechanic who took 3 months to change he got the engine from Japan and it’s is so fast I’ve never been pushed back in my seat in my Sonata and it is so quick it zooms with ease and it’s way stronger then before it’s quick in acceleration even when it’s going 40 it wasn’t like that before it’s so quick and the gas is so touchy and it’s the 2.4

Kent i have so much fun in it now it doesn’t even lag at all when I press the gas all the way like it used to the power is instant now on top of that it is so extremely smooth it feels like a luxury car almost but it can also be the fact that we customized it a lot it looks like a sleek sports car now all white and black and it has different suspension so Idk tbh

BEFORE you buy one of these (or any Hyundai), lookup the theta II engine issues. 3 people I know (including myself) have had engine failures. Hyundai insisted we pay the $5500 labor cost to replace. My friend who has a kia with the same ThetaII GDI engine had his replaced for free...but that's only after trying several dealers. Also Hyundai's CAD$ 65,000 replacement cost for Ioniq5 battery just proves, yet again, that they will do nothing to help customers if a problem occurs

I have this same model and year, with 70K on it. It's not a great car at all, at least mine is not. It is burning oil and sometimes doesn't start immediately. I did an oil-burning test and the Hyundai dealership says it is within normal limits, 1.4 Qt per 1000 miles!! Just crazy this is normal for a modern engine. Also the problem with starting they said they couldn't make it not work; the battery and starter tested good. In addition to that, I changed the battery a year ago and it was $300 for a new one. Just super crazy.
The third thing is, driving on regular gas ( like it is supposed to do ) engine knocks and hesitates. With Premium gas, it runs smoothly ( but more expensive). I really want to love my car but it is giving me trouble to do it. My other car is a 14-year-old Toyota Sienna and I never had any issues. So, from my experience, I will never ever buy another Hyundai. Only Toyotas for me. I like reliable cars and this car is not.

      1. Install an oil catch can
      2. Run ATS 505 CRO and CFO through the engine and fuel lines, respectively.
Doing these two things will clean out the gunk and carbon that accumulates in these engines and help prevent/slow down the rate (the oil catch can) of carbon and gunj buildup.
All GDI engines have bad carbon buildup issues, but it seems especially bad with these Hyundais' (sonatas, Elantras, etc ..2011ish-present day)
My '16 Sonata runs better now than it did when i bought it in 2019.
Also, make sure to clean your throttle body at least once a year.
Sure...a bit more maintenance than a Honda or Toyota of approximate age, but more than doable.

Stop whinning about seat heaters. Not for that entry level price. You want fancy & elaborate trim, it will cost you more. That is true of ALL makers. If it is not an option, and comes with as standard, believe me, the cost is built into the overall price. Nothing is free. Besides, you can buy seat warmers that you can plug in.
In line four engines outlive V6 engines. See a clip on YT by Scotty kilmer.

THE LEATHER & CABIN STILL SMELLS NEW 10 YRS LATER. WE'VE ONLY CHANGE OIL, & FILTERS. IT WAS HYUNDAI FLAGSHIP UNTIL THE GENESIS DEBUT. THEY ARE EXELLENT VALUE BOUGHT USED LIKE WE DID AT 15K MILES. IT CAME WITH 3.8L V6
& AUTOMATIC REAR WINDOW SHADE, CLUTCHLESS SHIFT, STEERING COTROLS FOR ALL RADIO/CD DASH FUNCTIONS, FRONT/REAR SEAT HEATERS, INFINITY SPEAKERS, ETC.
INFINITY PRICES ARE TOO HIGH FOR THEIR VALUE.
THE 2018 HYBRID BLUE SONATA IS OUT OF THIS WORLD. 60 MPG COMBINED. JUST CHECK IT OUT.
DO NOT BUY A PRE 2000 HYUNDAI. I USED TO SELL THEM. THEY WERE NOT WELL MADE. THAT WAS WHY THE OWNER FIRED HIS SON FROM BOARD CHAIRMANSHIP, &; REPLACED THE FAMILY BOARD WITH OUTSIDERS, THEN HYUNDAI TOOK OFF LIKE CRAZY.

Emmanuel newer Hyundai Sonata’s and Kia Optima’s don’t use timing belts they use chains and the warranty is transferable, the catch is it drops down 50,000 miles or 5 years.

Don't think I was whining in any way, considering how the other 11 minutes of the video were portrayed.

Bro, you may not have been "Whinning", but you might have been asking a lot for a lower trim vehicle. A little bit more filtering before presentation might be in order. However, that wish of yours came off sorta, as a knock against Hyundai. Just saying.

If I did the video, I would have told the audience that there was a seat heater option. Then leave it at that. Not, "I wish Hyundai added the seat heater to.... blah blah blah. No one gives away luxury items for free.!!!
Want a roof? You pay extra. Ditto for all the other "Luxury" items. We're not talking seat belts, or airbags here. If you want luxury, then the Limited versions in Sonata, Azera, Genesis, and Aquus might be in order.
I sincerely commend you for your video contributions nevertheless. Thank you.

The 2011-2014 and the 2018+ are both better looking than this car. This car is painfully bland looking inside and out

That sounds like a whole lot of opinion to me...

Yes, it is my opinion. This car is not ugly, just bland. However, when the 2015 Sonata was released, I remember one car reviewer, The Fast Lane Car I believe, asked "Where'd the style go?" Hyundai also reduced the base horsepower from nearly 200 to 185 from the 2014 to 2015 model year. 2.0 turbo power was also reduced.
Cars.com's review says "The Sonata's new design is polarizing to our staff. One of our editors wished he could be as enthusiastic about the new styling as he was about the distinct look of the previous generation. He said the previous Sonata ''was a knockout, a 'look at me' design-challenge project that worked amazingly well,'' and that it was instantly identifiable - unlike the new car."

Jacob Shreve might be a little better looking but you had recalls on some of those 2016 doesn’t have a recall
