In my experience you can't go by reviews of Chinese restaurants because everyone has a wide range of what they think is good. My favorite local spot is one of the lower reviewed ones. And one of the higher reviewed has almost made me want to walk out the three times I've eaten there over the last 15 years,
Agreed. Everybody has different tastebud. The ones giving out bad reviews are normally the ones expecting that American chinese flavor. They need to accept ethnic flavors. If you dont like it, go somewhere else. Can't please everybody.
You also have to consider that most people don't tend to leave good reviews. Most people would focus on leaving a bad review rather than a good one. It's human nature.
My first judgement on a Chinese restaurant is their fried rice. Usually it has been my experience that if their rice is good more than likely everything else will be pretty good. I'm serious about my fried rice. I loved your written review.
There's a similar test for Mexican restaurants. If they bring out the free chips and salsa and it sucks, then everything is going to suck. Pay for your drinks and then go somewhere else.
charging you and giving you the item they charged you for isn't being honest. Honest would have been refunding the soda price and telling you the mistake. They basically got a sell without any work.

You went early. From my experience, around lunch is always ideal for the best Chinese take-out. It's dinner or later when the food seems to drop off, whether it's made early or because of the rush... BUT, I've learned that the Pu Pu Platter is NEVER the right choice,. It's always meh and greasy. That broccoli is always fire though.

The language barrier is larger than most people realise. Expecting people to take orders perfectly in their second (or third) language is an unrealistic expectation. Going to a restaurant where you can point at pictures of food on the menu is safer. Many Chinese waitresses in the US are from Fujian Province and do not understand Mandarin, Cantonese, or English. There are 59 different dialects in China.

I think the worst restaurant reviews do so well because paying hard-earned $ for bad food is unexpected. We all enjoy positive experiences eating out, but when they're the norm (which they should be) it makes bad experiences more interesting.
The real test of a Chinese restaurant is General Tso's chicken from the sauce to the spice factor to the tenderness of the chicken. Most get something wrong when they put it together.
I have found with some places, it depends on the time of day, the day or night shift who’s working, and who’s not. I’ve had really good Chinese food and really bad. The last time I had it, it tasted as if they made it several days ago and microwaved it. Needless, to say I haven’t had Chinese sense, it’s not worth the risk in my opinion.

I made the mistake of ordering the scallops from my neighborhood chop suey house. I was sick for three days. I learned a lesson. The first thing I do now whenever I order food from a Chinese take-out joint, I always scout it in my car first. I drive by a couple of times. I try to see if there are any real, authentic Asian people patronizing the place. I check out the back door. I try to get a glimpse inside the kitchen. I park unobtrusively and make sure there are a couple of cats around before I order anything. No cats, no money from me.

I had a Chinese restaurant (with not one Chinese person there) that constantly screwed up my orders when I ordered from work. I made a few phone calls. That restaurant is now closed. Nyah!
Neither Korean or Chinese spots in America bear any resemblance to Korean or Chinese food in their own countries. I know because I've lived in China and spent time in Korea.

Man I feel bad when people leave negative reviews after one bad experience. These negative reviews really hurt these little places so I think it would be best if people had at least two or three bad experiences before they give a small mom and pop a bad review. As for the food, I can't think of one mom and pop place that I know of where I haven't had something I just didn't like. My local Chinese place is my personal favorite and even then I have had food I didn't like. I have learned with especially the Chinese restaurants these people work their tails off, my local spot is open 7 days a week 11 hours a day same husband and wife running the place, every day. If they were rude to me in some way, ide understand, if I worked that much ide be grumpy too. I feel like people only run to the internet to leave negative reviews but less are inclined to leave a positive review after a good experience. I get it, if the place is dirty, the staff is rude, the wait is too long ect.
They are a service not a charity. If you can charge the price of good food you better serve good food. 2-3 times wasting my money just to give a chance so that their business stays alive? Not my problem
Thing is with most Chinese places it’s not like they make everything fresh from scratch. Its all frozen then fried . Comes down to if they don’t over cook it not making it so greasy or salty .
I'm lucky the place literally down the road from me is amazing. Family run, and by that I mean the 12-16 year olds are working lmao. They have their kids take the orders since they speak English. Food is always on point too and they give you free shit if you order like over $35 I think?

This sounds about right to my Chinese spot, the ribs could be a bit overcooked and some things I feel are pretty meh in there but i like to think they are pretty good. My favorite spots near my house are the pizza and the bakery joints that are in my hood.
