    Sequence from the Rock & Rule animated feature film produced by Nelvana and released in the mid 1980s. It is villain Mok's big "rock video" which establishes in lyrics how much he thinks of himself - which is a lot!
    Over the course of the production the musical acts shifted as deals with talent came and went. Mok's songs were originally supposed be done by Mick Jagger (Rolling Stones) but he became unavailable when his solo album launched. Same thing happened with David Bowie who was next in line - his Scary Monsters album took off making him unavailable. Third time the charm, Lou Reed stepped up to provide the song and music we have here.
    This was done as traditional pre-computer cel-animation (early 1980s). All the effects were done optically with some help from Industrial Light and Magic where just off doing the first Star Wars movie at the time.
    Design, storyboards, animation layouts and posing by Verne Andru.
    Directed by Keith Ingham with animation by Robin Budd.
    Music by Lou Reed. Visual effects by ILM.
    From Nelvana's animated feature "Rock & Rule." Used by permission.

In addition to teaching comic book production and animation at the prestigious Vancouver Film School, I created the "Simply Accounting" name, designed Pigtronix's flagship musical effects pedal and launched both into successful brands. Driven to draw, I'm currently working on new editions of the Captain Cannabis comic book series I started back in the seventies. A unique mix of science fiction, dark comedy and gritty realism, the story is fun with great characters adventuring in an inspired universe told in what's been described as a truly original voice.

      Fun Tidbit: Mok was drawn with Mick Jagger specifically in mind to voice him and do the singing parts. (That's why his lips are their own character) For whatever reason, he couldn't do it and Bowie couldn't either so Don Francks did the dialogue and Lou Reed the vocals. Susan Roman did the dialogue for Angel and Debbie Harry the vocals. "Angel's Song" would be the framework she used for "Maybe Just For Sure" on the Def Dumb & Blonde album.

      True, but the pedant in me is confused by what it means, since it was an archangel sent by God who turned everyone into salt, and the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah didn't have any kind of "power" beyond being filled with lechers and hedonists.

      @@user-lb9xw4xf2q \ Lot had chose to live in the city because of how beautiful and prosperous it appeared, overlooking its depravity and choosing to follow the wealth he could gain from it. In other words he was seduced by something evil kind of what Mok references in this line. He's basically saying I have the power to make you want me even though I'm a walking red flag. Its interesting because in the scene after this line there are statues of people crumbing reminiscent of lots wife who turned into a pillar of salt after looking back at the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. Such a fascinating little movie shame it never did well.

      Evil company corrupts good morals.
      This line is made all the more fascinating because it encompasses this chipping away at Lot’s morals by the ppl he lived amongst, by personifying the town, and given Mok’s other biblical references through out this song, it all seems to play into his vanity and lust for power, while reveling in his own depravity

      I've heard people argue that his motivation for villainy is insanely petty and stupid. I would argue that that's the point. A good villain is someone that is entertaining to hate. The fact that Mok is so insanely self-important that he would murder thousands over (according to Lou Reed) two empty seats at one of his concerts just cements his depravity, which makes for a very fun villain.

      I liked it but it always felt incomplete. compared to heavy metal, it's not as good. I just wish that the production teams of both films collabarated. the animation and music and general art direction in rock n rule is so much better but heavy metal has such better writing and depth to it. I wish this genre would make a comeback, mostly. :/

    I watched this when I was 15...then my kids and wife found and bought me the 2-disk deluxe set. Being a musician I can say it's been a life-long ambition to cover this tune and let this generation discover R&R, what a song! I'd put Mok up against Ye any day of the week.

    I guess that in the original cut the «World War III» phrase was supposed to come off as gross and cynical, but the American cut explicitly stated that the characters are *not* humans that developed animal characteristics: they're mutated street animals that have the Earth all to themselves after the human race perished in the war. Specifically street animals, not pets, so no attachment to humans at least, resentment regarding them at most. So, everyone in this world probably *does* consider WWIII an amazing thing for their kind.

    God damn this movie is GORGEOUS! Why didn't it do better in theaters? Also, why not use Lou as the speaking voice for Mok, we know he's a decent actor. I guess I can't complain, Don Francks did a great job.

    • @Verneandru
      @Verneandru  Před 9 lety +86

      The music and the voices were handled quite differently. As I may have already mentioned, Jagger was originally slated [as can be seen in Mok's design] then Bowie and finally Lou Reed. From what I recall Lou came to the production fairly late in the game. Animators can't animate without lip-sync which depends on the actual recorded voices, so waiting on the musical talent would have put things too far off and we were already way behind.
      As for why it didn't do better in the theatres, the double-DVD set has an insert with a fairly good explanation. One of the problems we had on this production was the director was always away with the musicians so we were often left redoing work he didn't like when he returned after a 3 to 4 week hiatus. That put the production way over budget and years longer than it should have been. By the time it was in the can the people cheer-leading it with the distributors had left so nobody really cared anymore. It opened one weekend in Boston with no promo next to a Disney block-buster, did poorly [because nobody knew about it] and was pulled. Total shame and a real disservice to all the talented people who put their blood, sweat and tears into it.

      @Verneandru  Před 9 lety +20

      LOL - I hear you. From my experience the problems were systemic. The "system" stated at the time the screenplay has to be locked and an animatic in place before a project gets a green light. In this case because Nelvana had some success with their TV 1/2 hours they were given certification before the script was locked. Then they staffed up and had a crew of 350 waiting on the writers and directors to decide what they wanted us to do running the project way over time and budget. So, at the end of the day, it's political IMHO.
