DIY Friends! I hope you like this tiny cabin adventure Xx Just wanted to drop a message here to thank you all for your continued support and love. This video was really challenging for me to post. For the first time ever, I felt so creatively (and personally) vulnerable in front of the camera. This video is unpolished, very unedited (compared to my usual content) and really reveals a different, more introverted side of me. Beyond that, I've been so out of practice with my painting that I felt shy and embarrassed to share my work. Creativity takes courage and putting yourself out there in front of the entire world can be scary. But then I thought...how many of you feel that same way? We are all working towards being strong, curious creatives and to do that we need to be willing to share the good and BAD. So here I am, showing some of my bad in hopes that it inspires you to feel confident to share your creative adventures too. Since this video, I've picked oil painting and have been practicing my figure drawing everyday in hopes to get better and build my creative eye. Maybe one day my grandfather won't look like a character drawing from King of the Hill (lol). Creativity takes courage (and practice) and I hope you'll walk with me in this journey. xx Danie

“ What does love mean to me? That’s tough! I mean, I definitely know what love is, but to paint it, that’s the hard part.” And then you painted something that was too hard for you to paint. You couldn’t get it how you wanted it but you shared it anyway. Which is kind of what love is. The video you made is the real work of art, Danie. Just brave and beautiful work from a good person xxx

Honestly, seeing a painting that is not a masterpiece is so necessary. I appreciate you showing your audience that not everything a person does is going to be perfect. It's important to internalize that being creative is not the same as being flawless

So, the BIRD!! when you were talking about what love is and your grandparents, I kept thinking if they were still alive, ( I mean physical) and then the bird came and made itself known , and stuck around by the way. and I felt that your grandfather is such a powerful force in your life. and then you couldn't get his face right in your painting lol , until you turned him into a superhero lol . the love , the showing up of the bird, you looking for inspiration, your deep connection to your grandfather it's all connected. I do feel the bird was a symbolic gesture to say " hey kid , you got this, listen to your heart and don't buy into that internal critic " Also thank you for showing us your struggles ( growing pains lol) with becoming the You you know is in there. Keep things simple, its only when we let the outside mess with our natural knowing that things get wonky. Love you D , Paula from Calgary

I was always ALWAYS scared of birds. Then my dad died. A few weeks later, I started a big garden to keep my mind/broken heart busy. I kid you not, the first day working the land, a baby robin came and stayed with me all day. Id toss him bugs when Id find them and he kept his distance...after a few weeks of spending everyday with this bird, hed come and sit beside me to get the bugs. We became friends. It was so special. Now I live on a farm raising birds. I just think forgeing a felationship with a bird is an incredible thing. It really helped me thru a very hard time in my life.

I love that you shared your picture of your grandparents and love that you have seen it as an opportunity to grow rather than let it discourage you! I was just thinking that since that photo means so much to you wouldn’t it be so cool to use that as a reference by coming back to that same picture over time and repainting it as you grow! Like every year you attempt it again and you can see how much you’ve developed year over year? Anyway keep up the amazing work we love you!

That's the hardest part of being creative, the expectation that the result has to be good, pretty, whatever. It can drain the fun out of the process. I'm an illustrator so I can relate :) I find often when I'm looking back at pieces I really wasn't happy with at the time that I made them, I now find them quirky and interesting or funny and charming. When they're the work of past me I'm less connected to it and therefor less judgemental.

But after watching, and seeing you with the photo of your grandparents (on your phone) and then seeing your journal, snap shots, pressed flowers, funny showering scene... I realized your filmography is a big part of your creativity.sure, we could go whole hog and off grid, no technology... but that’s been done to death! We’re at NOW, now. USE IT IF YOU GOT IT! Why do I get hung up on stupid perfectionist ideals? That’s exactly where the squashing of dreams and creativity comes from. My dad was very mechanical (he repaired aircraft engines for the USAF), but he was creative too. He could take anything apart and put it back together or build it from scratch (he built our house, workshop, and storage building) AND he was an amateur painter and wood carver. I always felt intimidated by his abilities. I have found myself trying to do things he did now that he is gone. No, they're not great or perfect. The doing is in the trying and it doesn't have to be a masterpiece. Even great artists painted their best works many, many times!

The painting was very sweet....it came from your heart.
How nice you were able to get away to such a peaceful place.
I hope you recharged your creative spirit.

You know what, that painting was beautiful! If I tried, it probably would've gone terribly wrong! No matter if it was "perfect" or not, you put your love and dedication into it. I think that in itself, is beautiful and I'm sure your grandparents would love it no matter what it looked like! Also, if you did an orb around him, I think it would be super cute to make him an astronaut IF you really wanted to hide his face. We all need to learn to not be so hard on ourselves because we deserve happiness! I love watching you be creative, Danie! Keep being you and showing what it's like to just be 'human'. Lots of love from Boston, Massachusetts (:

The last 2 paintings were fantastic!! And even tho you didn't nail the one of your grandparents, it'll always remind you of your journey and courage. The nightmare painting is my favorite and I'd be thrilled to hang it on my wall!!😁

  • @sheilaspastelrainbowvision

Sometimes the best way to reconnect is to disconnect first. Like what an outlet plug that is not working you have to unplug it to see why inorder to fix it. Otherwise, it will just get worse over time. Same goes for people. We need to disconnect ourselves to fix ourselves. There is no shame in putting yourself first when it comes to your health, which includes your mental health. We are at our best when our energy flows smoothly. So like Danie shows in this film, take time to recharge and fix any problems you may have with your energy flow. Shine bright and be happy!

Thanks for sharing Danie! I don't think creative burn out or just burn out in general gets discussed enough...especially on YT where there is this expectation of endless creativity and videos. This video came at the right time for me and let me know I'm not alone. I've been working so so hard on my own channel (while maintaining a day job) that it landed me in the hospital on what was supposed to be my restful vacation a few days ago. It's so important to be gentle with ourselves and let ourselves slow down (I struggle really hard with that too lol). I hope you are feeling rejuvenated!

oh Danie, I so thoroughly enjoyed this video. It's so calming and the painting of your grandfather (aka Hank Hill) really made me laugh (I hope you don't take that the wrong way). The other paintings are truly beautiful, I think you are so talented and inspirational. Thank you!

Loved this! I am in awe of your talent. As for the being alone thing, I agree with you. Being with yourself is probably the hardest thing a person can do. All the distractions in the world (people, the Internet, etc) won't fill up the void like making friends with yourself.

Week to regroup & revitalize with Winston. Progressed with each painting. Your grandfather might think it's a hoot. Maybe take pictures of family & do a painting of them. Like you dad & brother helping with bedroom. Your mom & you in garden. Kenobi with you going for a walk (back view) & maybe include Geoffrey too.

Good for you Danie. I recently took up drawing again. For years I had the worse fear that I could no longer draw. Though my first few were very simple, I did an alphabet challenge, I was amazed at how quickly my drawings improved. That was April and a couple weeks ago I drew my first fashion illustration in 40 years! The best part, it was darn good! shocked the heck out of me. I hope you continue to paint and share your progress with us.
