Let’s plan! This week I'm sharing a different kind of video than my usual intense DIY programming.... the DIY IN PROGRESS household came down with the flu and I was out of commission for a week BUT I did manage to do a little backyard project planning and I decided to take you along with me! Hope you all enjoy my planning process and please leave your diy thoughts for what I could do with each space in the comment section below! ✨

For the greenhouse I would definitely see about running a buried waterline to it so you always have access to water. That way if it’s buried then you don’t have to worry about it freezing (depending on the depth) and it won’t get scalding hot in the summer sun either.

Another item is to run electrical when running the water line. You know the motto, “Dig once”.

Yes! This is exactly what I came here to suggest. I made the mistake at my first house of building raised garden beds with sun in mind but not water. Come late July I HATED having to lug the hose all the way out there to water every morning.

We built a greenhouse last year and love it. 2 things I love having that not all greenhouses have are automatic opening vent windows (using hydraulic lift s bought on Amazon) and a gutter system to reclaim the rain to use for watering.

Roots and Refuge built 2 greenhouses from windows and Garden Answer just had a Hartly installed. You're going to want full light on all sides of your greenhouse and a designated compost area. If you center the greenhouse with the back fence, 6-8 feet away, it will give you full light on all sides + much easier mowing and it will block the view from neighbors behind. I'm sorry you guys were sick...hopefully you will be feeling better soon 💜

I agree! It’s such a big space, why cram it into the corner? You could still put it in this general area, but work out some landscaping all around it. And a meandering path with some shrubs and/or trees around it would give structure to the space while still maintaining lots of lawn space for the doggy 🤗

Greenhouse idea, make sure you have a roof vent, like one of the windows pops up so in summer it doesn't BOIL inside. One on each side. So if you have 3 Windows on the roof, the middle one pops up on each side. There's hydraulics for this!

I’ve done a lot of work on my house since moving here 4 years ago, and as a single person, I have to plan out the steps. I also don’t have a Jeffrey to mow my lawn, so again planning is key. Yay it’s SaturDanie DIY. I agree with thinking out what you want. I spend a ton of time putting down ideas only to rethink them later. One thing I’ve come to learn is things I want later become things I realize I don’t use as much as I thought I would. I loved the idea of a greenhouse it’s so cut but it turned out it wasn’t as practical and more time consuming. I just didn’t have the time etc. even recycled stuff comes out to be expensive. I agree with the is it practical thoughts.

About Kenobi's trench, how about incorporate it in a space which is only for him? I was going to suggest a "dog box" full of sand for him to dig in - since her enjoys digging. However, it would have to be covered as any local cats will consider it a "litter box" !
I am hoping she talks about raised beds as a friend has offered me the use of her back yard for gardening (I live in an apt.), but between her and I & friends, lots of dogs use her yard ! So, thinking raised beds for veggies & flowers will keep dogs out (all dogs are on the smaller size. Kenobi could easily jump into them, so that is a factor!)

“Did Kenobi dig another trench?” I laughed out loud to this! Because it so reminded me of my dog Apache (Alaskan Malamute). After we built our garage, I noticed there was a really large trench growing in the backyard. But I though it was hubby digging it to run pipes to the new garage. But after awhile, as it grew I noticed it was going the wrong way. So asked hubby why he was digging it?
Me: Why is the trench you are dig to the garage going the wrong way?
Hubby: I didn’t dig it, it was the dog.
Me: No, the really big one. The 6 feet long and 4 feet deep one?
Hubby: Yeah, that one. IT WAS THE DOG!
Me: * Dumbfounded, the dog could dig such a large trench *

Danie, I feel like you would enjoy a Garden. Last summer was the my first time having one and I grew so much of my own food and it was a peaceful place to meditate and do yoga! Consider it when you have the skid steerer.

Glad you're both feeling better and Kenobi is de-skunked. Can't wait to see all these projects!!! You have a full summer of content here! Great backyard...huge. Did Kenobi dig the trench or did the previous homeowners put it in the channel water away from the house? I agree with the stone terraced steps around the fire pit for seating....makes more sense. Have fun with it all!

I love all your videos, Dani. Years ago a neighbour had an area in the back corner of his yard that was a “doggie toilet”. It had metal frost fencing and a base of small rocks that could be hosed off. He had 2 big dogs and this strategy kept his lovely yard clean. Not that you need or want this, but it might also solve what to do about those awkward angles behind the greenhouse. Just a thought. 💖

She could also add a "doggie dooley" which is a submerged hatch. Waste goes into the covered hole & powdered lime is added to help break down the waste.
The gravel footing is a good idea, though he will need to be retrained to use this area, since he's probably used the entire yard up to this point.

Danie talking about zoning makes my little city planner heart happy! Check your codes, folks! Do it according the the regs the first time so you don’t have to worry about having to take it down if you get caught or sell someday with nonconforming built structures! 😊

    • @m.maclellan7147
      @m.maclellan7147 Před 2 lety

I know this will vary according to town/city, but in your experience do "raised garden beds" need to be checked for zoning, since they are "semi-permanant"??

    • @sadie8165

It’s just me and my obsession with balance but I would put the greenhouse in the middle of the fence at the back and have gardens on either sides with a big path leading up to it. That yard has so much potential it’s huge, I wouldn’t even know where to start. Can’t wait to see the transformation your projects are always so fun.

I can't wait to watch all these videos as they come out! Just wanted to mention that in my rural Ontario municipality in order to get a backyard burn permit the fire pit has to be raised and so can't be built into the ground like that. No clue how it is in yours though.
We used to have a fire pit which was built into the ground using an old tractor tire rim!

I struggle with planning so much and I’m doing an art course at college 😅. I’m doing my final project for the year and planning is a must for this lol. Thankyou for showing me the step breakdown and the budgets too. Super helpful 🙏🏼🥳

Omg omg Ive loved your diy content but now this I need to go get a coffee and snuggle in. I'm so excited!! Zone 5 gardener up here between Barrie & Collingwood.
The comments are chalk full of things that popped into my head too. Gardening is truly an addiction especially for creatives. I can see you taking this to the next level so consider right now how the Sun tracks across your greenhouse and yard and if there are trees that once leafed out cast shade. Im so excited to follow along on this journey.

I've had a recycled window shed on my wishlist for years. To date, I've found only 2 cute old windows, haha. Also, we get a fair amount of hail where I live, so I think that old, thin glassed windows would be destroyed after only a summer or two, so I gave up the idea as impractical. Hopefully I can live vicariously through yours!

Make friends with remodelers…they may have stuff they throw away that you can have for free. I have a family member who built a summer kitchen with brand new triple pane 8 ft tall windows for the walls. They were custom made, and measured wrong, so they were going to throw them away! Their outdoor kitchen was built according to the size of these windows. It is a gorgeous room to gather in, to eat or just visit in a wind-free, bug-free environment. Good luck finding your windows!

Aw. I love Kenobi's trench. I think a fun, purposeful digging area for him would be fantastic. Have you filled in that area before, and he's dug it back out? My dogs (RIP), had a couple spots they would keep going back to, to dig or grab a mouthful of dirt on their way back into the house. Lovely little reminders still to have around. The greenhouse ideas and other plans look lovely and I'll be following along enjoying their execution. Hope you and Jeffrey are recovering well after COVID!
