Sorry guys, big mistake: in this video I was using AF-C on the Z50 in video mode but I should had used AF-F. The "bad" video AF is not a problem with Z50 but human error.
Nikon cameras has AF-C and AF-F for video shooting, which only AF-F (full time AF) would do continuous AF during video recording. I haven't been using Nikon cameras for video for a long time and totally forgot about it.

The mistake with the video autofocus was that it was it was in AF-C mode instead of AF-F. AF-F auto tracks faces and objects. Had it been in AF-F mode you would have had no issues with video AF. Now 100’s of thousands of people are gonna see this and trash the Z50’s video AF 🤦🏾♂️.
Or it was in AF-S. I think people normally think of AF-C as the one for video and may not know about the AF-F till they read the manual. Most are not used to needing to hold a shutter button down halfway to have the focus follow the subject like a Nikon camera in AF-C mode.
And a well deserved trashing it is. Nikon was last and still can't get it right. Maybe the engineers are too busy working on their resumes?

This is one of the most "full circle" videos on CZcams. When I started to get into photography, I watched these two review cameras and teach photography in Hong Kong (on DRTV). And now they are older, the country is different, the tone is more mature. I feel old. Change is the only consistent thing...

I see this camera as more of a mirror-less Nikon D5500/D5600 with 4K.

In Nikon AF-C mode can't keep focusing in video mode, need to go AF-F mode to fix the problem.
You're right I've totally forgot about it. It is totally on me. The Z50 shouldn't had focus so badly in video mode.
When I saw this video I was hoping you would talk about the protests and what it's like to be in Hong Kong during this time and you did, so thank you both.

Simply speaking, people don’t like a bad law, they complain, then the police shoot them, kill them and rape them, HK people call for help and protest, and it is still happening in HK everyday.
We’ve only skimmed the surface. I think we as photographers though we shouldn’t avoid things happening around us, especially a giant elephant in the room like that~
I saw a photograph. From over there. From up above the street. Of an entire city street filled with non violent protesters. And thought. How important photographs like that are.

actual z50 user here. Using since before launch. Get this one if you are more into stills. Even tho the af in this video is set up so bad, it works good believe me. Still I wouldn't buy it for vlog and shit. They didn't touch the stills part enough I think. I got both new dx lenses and the new VR tech in them is JUST EPIC! It's a whole new level IMO I can hold out crazy low shutter speeds that I wouldn't even attempt before. It feels better than most IBIS. ISO performace is really really good for an APS-C body. 11fps shooting works real good with AF too, thats a plus. The colors this camera puts out are awesome also eye tracking is working wonders (not on animals, too bad) even that asshat jared polin put together a nice review and check out ken rockwell too. I couldn't test it with all full frame Z lenses yet, but if someone intrested I will write some expreience in the future.
So frustrating. When someone reviews the camera. And they basically just took it out of the box.

The z50 just does everything well and is a joy to use almost the perfect travel camera

I have had my Z 50 with the two Z 50 new lenses for about three weeks now. It takes a bit of time to get to know the settings. Like putting it in AF-F when shooting video to have it easily track moving things. And in still photo mode the best setting is AF-A. When in that mode the camera selects AF-S or AF-C depending on if the subject is moving.
This camera is so easy to hold and use for me. I also have a Z 7 and like this body better. It is a great upgrade to the D5600. I have been shooting raw + jpeg for stills. The jpeg engine in this camera is very good. Much better than the D5500 I used to own. For casual shots this past week jpeg was fine and the shots came right out of the camera really good. I took a bunch of videos yesterday in 4K 24 and this is the easiest to use of all my cameras for video clips.
The ergonomics are excellent. And yes the grip sold me the minute I held it. But this thing adjusts with one hand easily for almost everything.

Honestly every time I'm hitting a rougher more stressful cycle in my life I come back to you and just hang out (even though my photography/tv professional career is now 5 years behind me and I've moved on to writing and game dev). My love for street photography has never rescinded though. Either way @Lok, errors happen no big deal (can't believe how toxic and entitled some of the commenters here are) I think your comment admitting your error and supplying the correct information is more than sufficient in rectifying your mistake. I came across a video with kai for a black magic micro studio camera. It's been forever since I seen that face. I use to watch him on digital rev. The last video I seen of them was when the new Canon T6i was coming out. I subbed so quick. Good to see you again kai and lok.
