Which iPad makes the most sense to you - iPad Air or iPad Pro?
iPad Air. I still have my Pro 2018, but it’s showing its age. Maybe it’s time to upgrade, but I don’t think I need the Pro… unless I decide to surrender my M1 MBP and move my video editing workflow to the iPad.
I’m tempted…
Actually...I was more excited by the new $349 US for the iPad 10.
All that WONDERFUL computing power of those new M4 and M2 chips in the Air and Pro, respectively, are hamstrung and shackled by the iPadOS.
Sadly, I've lately fallen in love with another woman...a Samsung Galaxy S6 Lite with a USB-C port.
Can a cheaper iPad with a USB-C port tempt me back to iPad?
Hmmm...
Still happy with my M1 Air, 256 GB and 5G.
Like @gnorb, I'm puddling along with my 2018 iPad Pro. It's still going even though its keyboard/cover (now unavailable) have perished due to constant use. I just costed replacing it and stopped when I got to NZ$4799 with the Magic Keyboard, Pencil Pro and 1TB of storage. In my country we have a saying... "Yeah, nah."
None. Most useless tech ever created....
I think Apple leaving the price at 999 in the UK is genius. That way there is less chance that you will forget the number for emergency services when you have a heart attack after clicking the Buy button on one of these. 🤪
Me in CAD, hearing that GBP and USD are at parity: 🙂🙃
Cry me a river.
Awesome comment🤣
It's $911 in the US. 🙂
🤣🤣🤣
Waiting impatiently for the new Mini. It’s the size that works for me. Hurry up, Tim.
Thanks for the content.
October 2025😂
@@PSy84 I’ve got an allegedly leaked document that says ‘26. “Come on, Tim. Prove us both wrong!”
If i pad mini was made with pro features I would buy it immediately otherwise they can shove it
Same here
I think it's wrong of them keeping the price the same without a spec bump.
Not only did I have the original iPad Pro, I'm still using. Looking forward to an upgrade to M4! :)
I'm waiting for the next Mini but I think these are solid upgrades for those who are ready for them. (The space Apple has fit the M4 into makes me hopeful for the next Mini.)
I currently am using the original iPad Pro and plan on upgrading it with either the new air or pro.
I've ordered the 13 inch Pro and got £550 Trade in for my old device, not bad, not bad at all.
Roll on May 15th
Great video👍🏼
I’m selling my 11” M2 512gb on eBay. I expect to get about $800
Hey bro. I ordered the 11 inch pro. You worried about it being too fragile thanks to its thinness?
Well done, thank you Mark.
Brilliant update, the only thing missing hardware wise for me was turning the Magic Keyboard into a hub for the iPad Pro with MagSafe
Yeah, they really missed out on a major opportunity on that! OTOH, I finally got an Escape key that I had been clamoring for! Also nice to finally get a touchpad that is, supposedly, as good as on a modern MacBook where they are phenomenal.
Upgrading from a 64gb M1 iPad Air to a 256gb M4 iPad Pro. The storage alone was worth the upgrade, but the screen is a bonus. I can’t wait to draw in procreate.
The M4 iPad Pro 1TB 13” with a keyboard, standard glass is £2248. Almost the same price (would be the same if you got a pencil) as a 14” M3 Pro Mac Book with 18GB Ram/1TB SSD. As much as I love doing some work on my iPad Pro now and again, I always go back to my Mac to do the important stuff. I can’t justify spending the same amount of money on the tablet as on the computer unless something significant happens with the iPad OS.
What configuration have you ordered?
I own a iPad Pro 11.9“ 2020. Still happy with it.
What Pro features are they including in the iPad Air? Let’s see: Mini-LED? Nope. OLED? Nope. 120hz? Nope. Face ID? Nope. M4? Nope. Yeah I got nothing.
Those are the 4 upgrades of the next 4 generations of iPad Air🤣
And not even M3. Apple likes to milk old tech as long as possible.
It’s not a Pro model, that’s kinda the point.
@@jamesbulloBruh skipping M3 is the whole point of Ipad pro this year. Why the f would an Ipad Air refresh get it then ?
The M2 isnt "Old tech" its an insane chip
@@jamesbullo Ik sheeps were right around the corner😆.
Not naming it Pro doesn't justify it so many differences in the features offered for a 300$ price difference only. They just want to extract as much money possible from the consumer by attracting them with "Pro" model only.
I have just ordered the new iPad Pro 13” with the nano screen, as I often have trouble with reflections. This replaces my 2021 M1 iPad Pro which as I use heavily every day now definitely has battery degradation only lasting 4-5 hours on a charge. I have been using the iPad Pro right from version 1 and have owned all 12.9” versions except the M2 which I gave a miss.
Gonna exercise restraint and wait for new Minis. HOPEFULLY these drop this year. I LOVE the Mini and it suits what I need. Good vid mate.
Thanks for posting this video
Hi mark when you review the pro can you tell us is it worth getting the oled display I mean to say is it so much better or a little better. Thank you
I'm thinking of getting the base ipad Air. Do you think it would be a good idea to get the new pencil pro, or just settle for the current one?
Yes, ordered it yesterday, not concerned about cost, it's a useful tool.
If you want the most powerful m4 chip you have to buy 1 or 2TB version. Ppl really need to check out this product properly b4 they buy. Will be interesting to compare the 256/512 version performance against the 1/2TB version.
Nice video Mark
I’m a big iPad (pro) fan. I use one as my main home computer and have been very happy with my M1.
The M2 didn’t offer enough in terms of upgrades for me so I skipped that one but have ordered a 512GB WiFi silver 13” model with the pro pencil and the new Magic Keyboard
I love nice screens and this OLED upgrade was enough for me to buy. M4 and the reduced weight is a really nice bonus, as is the increased base storage
Shall look forward to your reviews when you have both models to hand.. keep up the great reviews 😊 thank you
Thanks, will do!
Always appreciate your take Mark. Seriously considering picking up the larger Air and older Magic Keyboard to see if it can be my laptop replacement. Those updates to Final Cut and WWDC right around the corner have me hopeful.
Thanks for the lovely words!
nahhh, get the new pro with the new aluminum magic keyboard with a glass trackpad if you really wanne replace your macbook!!
Just ordered iPad Pro 13 256! I have been hanging on for this release and watched the event with excitement. My original iPad Pro is in its last legs, my MAC is sooo old and I have ordered magic keyboard and pencil too!
I will use it for everything and maybe even hug it a night 😂. Counting days until I collect it.
I'm probably going to go for the new iPad Air, most likely in the 13" size. The one thing that always kept me from getting an Air has been the paltry storage, maxing out as it did at 256 GB. Now that I can 512 GB, the major reason I might have gone for a Pro has been taken care of.
I will be heading over to Hong Kong as soon as it's available there. I will need to try it out first, before I commit that kind of money. But I'd say it's 90% likely that's what I will do.
I really wanted to get the new Apple Pencil to go with my iPad Mini, but sadly it seems as though it won't work with my favorite little device. I've long wanted more control over the orientation of brushes in Procreate, and now it's available. But not to me, as long as I'm using my beloved Mini. Bummer!
I believe the Magic Keyboard is also aluminium now like the Macs
I still have an original 12.9" iPad Pro, it got my GF through covid when the libraries closed, and she also uses it for email and consuming media. It's still going great, as are both my 2018 and 2021 12.9" iPad Pros. Eventually, I'll have to upgrade at least one of these. I'm loving the new tandem OLED displays of these ones.
8:46 yes I had the original 9.7 iPad Pro. It was so thin and fast. Then I went to the 10.5 iPad Pro, I thought that was huge. I had the 11” 2018, the 2020, and currently the M2. I am finally upgrading to the 13” as I finally think it’s light enough! ❤️ I can’t wait to drive to the Apple Store next week.
Thanks for that quick summary, Mark - you picked up things I certainly missed in my first watch. When you are reviewing, I am really keen to hear real world use of the new Logic Pro 2 for iPad. I would consider an iPad (probably Air 11 inch) with keyboard and Apple Pencil Pro, as an alternative to a laptop IF it can work for music production. Everything else I do would work with it... (web browsing, documents, entertainment viewing, reading etc...) but if it really does work for music production - then I could be sold...
I'm still on my 11" M1 iPad Pro. I'm waiting to see if there's some compelling reason in iPadOS18 before pulling the trigger and updating.
Getting myself a new 13 inch pro, I have had my 1st gen pro now since it launched, solid still even if the battery is getting a bit goosed. Waiting to find out about this nano screen gubbins before I order it, see if it's worth the extra cash, or jwill just adding a paperlike screen protector remove glare enough ... deffo getting a pencil too!
Will wait for comparison review between iPad air and m4 iPad Pro to see if any real advantages in the Pro version. I’m waiting on new iPad mini it’s the one that really works best. Another great video Mark
Quick question: If I use my iPad mostly for Affinity Photo and light video editing (eg.: IG reels). Do you guys think the iPad Air 13" with the M2 is enough?
I’d have liked the ability to switch between iPad OS and Mac OS. It would’ve also been nice if the USB-C port on the Magic Keyboard was capable of data throughput.
that would be a great idea! but can't see apple doing it
I agree on both points! Unlike you and probably most everybody else, what I really want is a terminal app w/ a standard UNIX shell like bash or fish and access to the entire file system as well as any mounted network shares. At least I will be able to sideload iPad apps within a few months and that will probably include some decent command-line support. I even spend about 50% of my time on my MacBook Pro on the command-line.
I still have my M1 iPad Pro. Until today, I haven’t had the urge to replace it. I am going to get the 13 inch iPad Air. I don’t have a need or use the new iPad Pros. The new 13 inch iPad Air is fits my needs and any potential use I have. Now we need a bit more flexibility in the iPad OS and things would be rocking.
Yeah I bought the iPad Pro 12.9 just for the bigger screen … I don’t need all the available performance on my M2 iPad Pro. Before I bought the M2 last year November. I had the iPad Pro 2nd gen for over 6 years. And I assume I will have the M2 at least for 5 years. And who knows what is then available. I’m sure I will buy a tablet with the biggest screen again.
You're going to give up 120 HZ? I'm really not going to see any performance bump. Are you sure you're just getting sucked into a little bit of hype here. M1 iPad pros should be fine for years to come
I ordered my 13 inch iPad Pro M4. I should get it on Wednesday. Can’t wait to see how it is in person.
Still driving my iPM 5, but it has 1911 battery cycles after 5 years of usage, battery life is 4-6 hrs when used intensely, max loading is now up to 72% only - now, most of the time, I use it plugged in, with a physical keyboard and mouse (Apple magic keyboard, Logitech Ultrathin Mouse) and a simple foldable stand.
Waiting for the iPM 7, as you might have guessed... I am a die-hard Mini aficionado! All the new tablets are surely great and will bring lots of joy to their future users for sure - but for me, where I go, my iPM goes... sometimes tossed in to my backpack with a mouse and magic keyboard (the compact, simple one), sometimes just w/o anything but maybe a lightning cable to load it...
I am still using my original iPad Pro the 12.9", this is the upgrade that I have decided to finally replace it. However I have decided to go for the 11"
Waiting for your video. Thank you
Nano texture 16gb of ram and 10 core CPU (I think) is only for the 1 & 2 TB models. I’m pretty excited for the new iPads a little bummed the second generation pencil, that I just bought less than a year ago, is not compatible with the new iPads.
New version of Final Cut Pro for the Mac too 10.8 only 6 months after 10.7. Got some decent features too.
Hi I would like to know if this new M4 iPad supports MS Office ? Because I work a lot on Excel and PowerPoint.
Most iPad can use MS. 365 but its on the subscription model and not the pay once and use as long as you like version that you can on Mac and PC.
I really hope they put out a new Mini later this year. I love this last version but I want to get one with a larger storage capacity.
I have an iPad Pro 10.5” (2017), so have been waiting for this new iPad Pro to upgrade.
I’ve ordered a 11” iPad Pro with 1TB with nano-texture glass, it’s bloody expensive but want to future proof it for another 6-7yrs.
The 1TB also means the full 10-core CPU with 4 performance cores and 16GB Ram, which the 256GB / 512GB versions don’t have.
However my biggest issue with any of the ‘M’ range of iPad is that they are still running iPadOS, surely these are powerful enough to run MasOS. I want dual boot so I can select either operating system to boot into. If I could run MacOS I’d buy the new keyboard case & pencil pro and my 14yr old MacBook Pro would become obsolete, I hardly use it so can’t justify buying a new MacBook but there are the odd things I miss on my iPad that I can do on my MacBook and that’s why I’ve kept it.
Here’s the setup I put together that checks all the boxes.
I bought the Mac Mini with the M2 Pro chip, 16gb memory and 512 storage. I already had the iPad 10.5 Pro so I also had iOS. I also bought a 27” monitor.
So with Continuity I can share the keyboard and trackpad and Sidecar to share the screens. So I can plug the monitor into either the Mac or the iPad and use MacOS and iOS.
Astropad is a $79 USB-C plugin device that enables the Mac to project the OS onto the iPad.
So now I have a well rounded setup
I had planned on getting the new Air sometime fairly soon mainly cause I wanted the bigger screen, until yesterday when I was able to obtain a slightly older 12.9 inch iPad Pro. So, now I will be in the market for a used Magic Keyboard and maybe an Apple Pencil cause I rarely have used the Pencil when I’ve had it in the past.
Quick question: do you guys know if the iPad Air M2 is powerful enough to handle Photoshop or Affinity Photo & Final Cut Pro?
I hope the USB speed is faster this time. Yes its thunderbolt but that 40Gbps is for display data. It can only do 10Gbps so hope we go up to maybe 20 this time idk 🤷🏼♂️
I see many comments online regarding people having difficulty deciding on the 9-core CPU version. My take on the matter is that since the 9-core version performs similarly to the M3 chip, so it's not weak. If you are considering the 1TB model for the chip reason, you're essentially spending an additional $500 for a single-core upgrade, which isn't really worth it for most cats unless that one core makes a life and death difference to how you use the iPad. Additionally, most people don't need more than 256GB of storage, especially if you already have the 2TB iCloud+ monthly subscription. If you own an M1 or M2 model, the real question to ask yourself is how excited you are for the Tandem OLED. Otherwise, just forget it. The chip gimmick will always make whatever you buy today appear obsolete in a year or two, as seen with how the baseline M4 chips already outperform the M2 Max chip. So, instead of spending any money on an upgrade, it's better to just save it and go with the baseline. Perhaps in two or three years, you can get a brand new iPad with the money saved from not upgrading + the trade-in value. And If u are one of the guys who are still complaining about not having a MacOS on IPad, go get yourself a 15 inches Mac Air, the price is literally the same as the baseline 13 inch Ipad M4.
I ordered the 13 inch iPad Pro, and am REALLY looking forward to receiving it !
So what’s the next to buy between IPad Pro and an iPad Air 6? I really want to start drawing in my spare time
Would one update from M2 6th gen 2022? Not sure what is the PRACTICAL difference.
Yes I had the original iPad Pro 9.7. I’m actually upgrading from the the original iPad Pro to the new pro 11 inch version
My M1 11 inch iPad Pro has been my main computer for some time now. Although the M1 is still an excellent chip, the idea of the M4 having a 3.8x faster neural engine is v tempting! 😎
How good is that Magic Keyboard?
Stellar video, as always, mate!! M4 iPad Pro + still-gimped OS = most expensive Netflix/Amazon Prime streaming device $$ can buy.
Not really it's actually the cheapest device you can buy because if you're only using it to watch videos you can keep it for like 8 years and it will still be perfect at doing that.
IPad pro is a BARGAIN. Android tablets are cheap up front but they slow down and are terrible at virtually everything.
If you want to just watch videos buy a 2018 iPad pro 12.9 inch for 400 bucks and stop crying.
@@ZxAMobile You missed the point entirely
Procreate and professional artists say hi. Ordered and so, so impatient.
What an incredibly stupid thing to say.
This. Its pitifully gimped with one port and the OS. What use is logic pro 2, which they advertised for it, when you cant even plug a pair of headphones in? shite
We need a comparison to the last gen
Great video Mark. My iPad Pro is my least used Apple Device. If I spec and buy all the accessories then I’m moving into MacPro territory with costs. I think for designers and film / video makers it’s an exciting and productive device. And I think that is where Apple is going with it. The new iPad Air will be the consumer choice I think. I just hope they sort out iPad iOS at WDC in June. If Apple delivers on Ai then we may be on a new exciting journey with Apple.
I want the new mini!
Ive just bought an ipad pro in july last year. Looks good but its time to jump one model. Next year hopefully i will try the new too
With those new features on the Pencil Pro it will become far more useful of an accessory for the Vision Pro.
Great video! Cheers 🍻
Still not tempted to upgrade from my 4th gen Pro
This M4 chip tab
Has NPU ?
of 16 core or more.
Because
M1 M2 M3 in laptop and in I Mac has 16 Core NPU
But in I pad of M1 M2 , I didn't know , that NPU is present or not ?
Please ans
And suggest I pad with NPU Chip
they all have 16 core NPU
I used to have the original iPad.
I used it for work and it was great. It definitely ate into my usage of my MacBook at the time.
Years later I have the M2 Air and iPad Air and I find I prefer the Mac. iPad OS is painful to use.
I'm not getting the iPad (either of them) but can't wait to watch your review
Still doing all my artwork on an original iPad Pro so it’s time for an upgrade, my plan was to purchase a new pro if they moved the camera because I use it for a lot of FaceTime calls as well as art stuff. They’ve exceeded my expectations with a 13” version with a side camera however I don’t think I need the power of the Pro so I’m going to save some money and get an 13” Air. Also I don’t really need a new pencil the one I have does everything I need. I think much like the action button on the iPhone 15 Pro I’ll forget about the new functionality and stick to my traditional ways of doing things.
Have the 12.9 m1 and it’s been just an entertainment device. Thinking of selling it and my MacBook to upgrade to new MacBook. I tried to use it as my only device and just can’t do it.
That Tandem OLED display looked so good when watching on my old 2K Samsung monitor! 😂
Nice recap. Just a few things. Final Cut and Logic updates come to the Mac on Monday and are not M4 dependent. Also, the new keyboard is not thinner than the previous model.
Digging the Reddwarf T-shirt 😊
Around double the full screen and peak brightness of the S9 Tab, dang. Really wish there was a MacBook Air Pro with this screen. Hopefully iPad OS 18 does enough to allow me to use it as my primary machine (Xcode).
Well for me iPad Pro...but because of the lightness and thinness. I want to use my iPad for drawing. I would have liked the Nano Textured Screen but $500 extra to get it (have to have the 1TB and then they have the gall to ask $100 more to get it Nano Textured.... Geeez) I will just get a paper like from your link instead. $50 vs $500. I have an iPad Pro M1 13" but I am going with the 11" so it is lighter to carry and draw on (I tend to not use the 13" because it is so big and bulky... unless I have it on the keyboard) For now I will get the Magic Keyboard and if I find a good case on Amazon for it (Apple is just offering their Denim Cases that look like 💩within 3-6 months) So I have two weeks to decide.
wasn't the cleaning cloth thinner? ;-)
The 4x improvement is with hardware accelerated raytracing which m2 doesn’t have (from apple website)
The nano textured glass with much less glare is overlooked. I wish it wasn't just an option on the 1TB and 2TB models for ipad pro. Their supply chain may not be optimized to make it an option for all ipad pros
Great video and pre review. I am finally considering an ipad pro 13 after all these years because of oled. Currently using tabs9ultra with s24u. Amazing devices. I think apple messed up by making the 13 inch 300usd more and having a binned m4 chip in the 256-512 storage. I pray that the ios and ipad os update will really be what consumers have been wanting.
Was waiting for you take, so thank you!
I really wish they would have kept the iPad the same thickness and just (a) gotten rid of the camera bump and (b) given us a bigger battery.
I agree! I feel like that’s what most people care about anyway. Plus, with the same thickness as before, we could actually use the second generation Apple Pencil on it!
I agree
Expensive clutter I'll never use, prefer my phone.
11 inch iPad Air ordered to replace my M1 iPad Pro 11 inch. I'm a developer not a 'content creator' type so don't have the need for all the artistic gubbins but I do a lot of Zoom calls so want the camera in the proper place. This works with all my existing cases so I don't have to spend a fortune on accessories. If iPadOS ever catches up and allows me to do 'real work' then I might consider a 13 inch down the road
Been waiting too long not to get a new pro. My 2018 11inch pro has such awful battery life this point and even though this new one is overkill for my needs, I’m spoiled by pro-motion. Can’t wait for next week!
Hi all..does it make sense to trade my m2 ipad pro 13" for 13" air?..the landscape camera is really appealing
60hz refresh rate on the air. Depends what ypu arr using the ipad for
Hi Mark please make a video comparing the new IPad Air M2 verses the iPad Pro M2 running logic 2 for iPad . Thanks
I was wondering about MagSafe charging which they didn’t do on the new iPad Pro! Was surprised about that!
Five different sized circles on the camera bump?
Waiting for a mini.
What’s interesting is that Apple made the “ Air “ because of the thinness & light weight, but now, the Pro is lighter than the “ Air “ 🤔
Would you rather the iPad Air M2 or iPad Pro m1 certified refurbished given they are basically the same price?
it’s great for kids, pensioners and artists and maybe photographers. So a smaller market segment that would benefit from it but I suppose it’s a big market still. For the average laptop user I don’t think it can work and a laptop makes more sense from a financial and workflow pov
I think you’re wrong with the new final cut and use an external drives that works on the M1 and M2 iPad Pro as well. It’s just in the final cut two software hardware.
I’m still using the original 9.7” iPad Pro - it’s only in the last year that it’s really starting to feel its age. I do need to think about upgrading, but the Pro is probably too expensive to justify. :-(
To thin, fine if with the keyboard using which a lot of users do I know especially as they moved the cam (but may as well get a MacBook if thats it primary use) ,,,,but I be worried about its strength. I will see how people get on with it.
Very nice video
Imagine if Apple provided new Macs and you needed to check a chart to find out which keyboard and mouse worked with your particular choice of Mac.
That’s what they are doing with the iPads.
I know the reasons why, but this complex mess is a conscious choice by Apple which they could make work but they choose not to.
Every keyboard and every pencil should work with every iPad.
Yes some features might not be supported but at least you could use old peripherals with your new iPad.
Don’t like two versions of the M4 and missing a Mini.
Being thin at the cost of battery capacity, chip cores, and heat dissipation isn’t a good trade.
With a case on it, you won’t notice.
A grandmother should be able to buy any iPad and not worry whether a Pencil or keyboard will work with their model. What’s going on with the missing camera…
Apple has a messy line up and like Steve Jobs did upon returning to Apple as CEO, needs to slim down and get rid of overlapping iPad models.
Magic Keyboard
Sort out the hobbled software and I might get interested
Exactly this. I'm beginning to think that iOS just isn't capable.
This version of the iPad Pro is pretty much the same price as a Mac Book Pro (when you add on all the glorious add ons (pencil/keyboard/glass etc). The iPad needs to be running on Mac OS before I can justify it being the complete replacement for my Mac.
What’s the screen like? Is it good on the eyes? I haven’t heard a SINGLE CZcamsr talk about if it has DC Dimming or PWM flickering ect
M1 is just about enough for everything you can do on iPad OS. The day iPad runs on Mac OS, then yes, M4 will make sense.
I can’t wait to get a new iPad Pro :)!
Yes the first vid of this wooooooooooo
