    My grand daddy was a mechanic for Chrysler in the 60s - early 80s. In 1970, when i was very much a kid, he drove home a 70 super bird from the dealership. I have no idea how or why. All I remember was that big ass wing and him flooring it with me sitting in the front seat. A memory I will never forget.

    The cutouts above the front tires, are meant for the air pressure that builds up in the wheel wells. It was one of the early race cars to incorporate this. There is a high pressure zone at the top of the wheel well, so the cutout creates a low pressure, so you get better brake cooling as a additional benefit.

    • @drippinglass
      @drippinglass Před 2 lety +8

    • @69Dartman
      @69Dartman Před 2 lety +4

      I read the same thing. They did the cutouts so when the actual race cars started cranking the suspension down with all the downforce the huge racing tires would hit the fenders so they needed the cutouts and the bumps were just to cover the holes.

      @@69Dartman yes. And the rear wing was not for downforce, it was for the side stabilizers. The only reason why it was so high is to allow the trunk to open. Seriously over-rated car. It wasn't even that good aerodynamically because of the rear profile.

    • @69Dartman
      @69Dartman Před 2 lety +2

      @@truantray They did the best they could with the original Road Runner/Satellite body they were given and it was supposed to look like the race car so probably not exactly the same wing setup etc. Supposedly the first prototype race cars were bottoming out the suspension and tearing up the tires so they had to dial it in and tweak things to make it really work on the track. I haven't totally studied everything they did to them but I remember seeing one driving down the roads as a little boy and thinking it was a funny looking car, and probably a race car. I think the one I saw was a Daytona but that was a long time ago when people would actually just drive them and they were new.

    Beautiful car! You should be able to get softer springs in the coilovers to help with the ride, but IMO, the stock feel of the B-Body mopars is just about perfect for street driving. Just recently did a 300 mile roadtrip in my '68 Road Runner and was less sore than I was when I did the same trip in my '18 Challenger. Can't wait to see more of this one on the channel!
