  • Well, almost. The highly sought after translucent crystal opal appears black when in a seam as there’s no light coming from behind or opaqueness to diffuse the base.
    This adventure sees the Grace Opal brother’s scratching around in old drives, finding some delicious bits and pieces, while continuing the long game chasing virgin ground where we probably covered expenses.
    The old trusty Tippersaurus Rex throws down again after about a year in extinction and we unbox and assemble our new opal tumbler.
    All in all, a typical trip, full of wonder and adventure. Coober Pedy is seriously a magical place where dreams can come true, if you believe…
    Thanks for watching!

      Haha, thanks mate! We do very much appreciate what the miners on the series go through to lift the profile of opal but are so glad we just produce as we go, it’s a nightmare dealing with a film crew while trying to mine, a different game altogether. Thanks for watching!

      The young guns have managed to capitalise on their exposure brilliantly, getting MILLIONS of views on their own vids now! As for us, we just need a million bucks so we can retire and go opal mining lol.

    • @Opaldigger
      @Opaldigger  Před rokem +2

      Not this trip mate, it looks very much like Donna’s Rush crystal but it was just a little patch on in the concrete bottom level at 65 feet on Olympic. Very patchy, we were lucky to jag a bit!

    If potch is opal do you know why it never developed color?

    • @Opaldigger
      @Opaldigger  Před 11 měsíci

      We do have some idea. Opal can be man made via colloidal settling of silica particles in solution. In nature this settling needs to have regular sized matching particles, larger produce more reds, and smaller more blues, the ionic charge and settling flow rate regulate patterns and the these are produced by the settling environment, filtration and mineral purity/impurity of the surrounding host rock. So potch has not been subject to either the ideal ionic charges, has flowed too fast through the substrate to settle into regular patterns, or has had all of the attributes of gem opal but then continues to mix making it turn milky white, a bit like a rainbow pin wheel. Some claims are ALL potch, this is the default. The rarity is in having a fault (slide) that has just the right amount of movement, mineral staining (charge) and hard to soft contrast to make places for the opal to be ‘caught’ it’s quite fascinating!
