Making an Easy Dovetail Jewelry Box Project

  • These dovetail jewelry box projects are perfect woodworking gifts. They take very little material, they can be made quickly, they are pretty easy to construct, but they have a huge WOW factor when you give them to people. I used figured walnut for my jewelry box. It consists of a giant sliding dovetail joint that connects the lid to the base. Inside the jewelry box is a tray lined with felt. It’s a beautiful woodworking project. If you are interested in making a quick DIY gift, give this one a shot.

    Hey there wanted to let you know i loved this video and found this while searching for inspiration for my self directed project at school made out of wood. I wanted to know if it would be okay if i could make this? If so, would you mind perhaps listing down how to make this or the measurements for each wooden cut and length, width, etc? Hopefully you see this in time so I don’t fall behind, thank you so so much :)!!

    Cool idea and (seems) pretty simple to built 👍
    What about slicing the initial block in 3 parts (thin/thick/thin) for the bottom/middle/top and then breaking the middle block in 2 sides and one center part that will still hav to be hollowed before gluing back all together to make a box with maximal continuity of the woodgrain ? 😅 Pretty much more work I guess, and saw kerf will have to be dealt with, which might not be this easy... 🤔

    Excellent!!!!! I did this type of boxes in the past as a gift for different friends but no more,,,,,I know what you are doing with all this effort when I gave them out all I got was rather lacksidaisical "cool" or "that’s nice" so I quit casting pearls before swine and keep them around my home and shop and if they really like something and want to know about work and sweat and throw in words like "family heirloom" or "that is beautiful" and "I could pass it on to my kids", then I might give it to them….but for most part people don’t appreciate the skill and sweat that goes into making it, so I’m somewhat stingy about giving out projects…..but congrats on your skill set and sweat. I hope you don’t "cast pearls before swine" and give it to a person that will treasure it ok just keep it from some clown using it to hold crazy glue or greasy gun parts …….nicely done!!!!

    • @TiffMcGiff
      @TiffMcGiff Před 9 měsíci

      Show us the laws he broke you psycho. Art is meant to be shared. I’m sure more than one person has achieved this simple design on there own merit. Did you try reaching out to Newton first before putting him on blast? Cuz this guy is no villain I assure you.

    • @NewtonMakes
      @NewtonMakes  Před 9 měsíci +37

      I’m sorry to say, I don’t know who Timber Biscuit Woodworks is and have never seen his/her videos. I rarely consume woodworking content for this very reason - I don’t want anyone’s work to strongly influence my own. It helps me to keep a clear creative process.
      Every once in a while, I have stumbled across someone’s project that was so perfect I had to give it a try. In those rare cases, I’ve gone out of my way to give the person credit. Why wouldn’t I? It’s no harm to me and it helps to promote a fellow creator.
      I don’t know what Timber Biscuit made or how it resembles mine. The idea for this project began because I was brainstorming ways to build a bench and wanted long, horizontal dovetails under the top. When thinking of those dovetails, I visualized slicing one into small sections and making tiny boxes out of it. In my shop, I make A LOT of boxes. So, for me, this was a natural progression in my creative thought process.
      This project is rock simple. It’s a sliding dovetail and a cut out. I’m not shocked if someone made a similar project. It’s woodworking and that happens all the time. I’ve shopped for materials on Etsy and encountered projects that look exactly like ones I designed. I don’t assume they copied me because there are lots of inspiration points as a maker. Perhaps some did copy me. If so, cool! I made something that inspired another woodworker and promoted the craft? I actually think that’s pretty awesome.
      The audio podcast Making It started because two of the hosts accidently made similar project videos and talked to each other about it. No assumptions of ill intent; simply chatting and finding out how much they have in common. That led to a fantastic podcast (highly recommend). I’ve received a group chat’s worth of comments, but Timber Biscuit hasn’t emailed me directly. If they did, maybe we can even chat about the craft. Let’s strive to not assume the worst of each other and instead work together to inspire the next generation of woodworkers. This is a fun hobby; let’s make it a fun community too.
      I constantly extend a welcoming hand to peers. Others can do the same or slap it away. Let’s always hope for the former. Regardless, I wish you and Timber Biscuit the best. I hope you make some cool stuff in the future!

      @@NewtonMakes I don’t understand why people are so judgmental. If you sat on your computer and researched every project idea you had to see if someone had done it already you wouldn’t ever make anything. I enjoy your videos and I learn a lot from them. The only thing I wish I could change is that you can teach me one on one

      Timber Biscuit put this in the public domain, can't see how that's stealing. (plus it's uber simple) This guy is putting his take on it and also sharing. That's what woodworkers do.

    • @stevegpsych68
      @stevegpsych68 Před 7 měsíci +5

      Absolutely the idea was stolen. I have soooo many original ideas and I search for how to make them and bugger me, nearly everytime I find someone has stolen them. Often they've even improved them to just to make it more insulting. Ithink my mind is being tapped in to somehow because no-one on this planet could possibly think of the same things I do. Having a dovetail sliding lid is soooo original and unique, only one person could think of that. I was stunned to discover this concept. Great snappy informative video thankyou. I think I'll make one! 😅
