Helpful thanks. Have a living room wall like this to deal with. The wall also has rising damp so have to wait for that to be treated before I can start. Might be a good idea to use a dehumidifier before I start preparing the wall too.
Totally, I mean, this could have easily been a longer video, maybe even 12x 90 minute long video episode series released once each month! Just stop talking will ya and get on with it! 🖐️🎤
So the like brown /yellow chips behind the paint can stay on the wall ? Do you do video calls ? I’ll pay . I gotta few questions i need to show and tell
The paint in my 1927 house is so stubborn. Instead of peeling the paint someone just painted over it. Now its 3-4 layers thick of different colors and paint types.
Tackling this job in my kitchen tomorrow. Do I need to let the PVA get before adding the primer? Thanks for all the videos, you're my go to CZcams guru for painting and decorating! 🙂
Don't use pva if you don't know what your doing. Use zinsser peel stop. It's designed for this and easy to use. Just paint it on, then when dry apply your top coats
Is the purpose of using the primer/undercoat to negate the need to skim fill (for want of a better term) the areas where the paint flaked off, to achieve a seamless finish?
Can't figure out what's savable and what needs scraped off cause most of it comes off very easily so doing a grouling full strip job of entire room sucks
Great video! Thanks for posting. How would you recommend dealing with old flaking primer that I intend to paper over with lining paper? The wall is too large to scrape it all off.
Thank you... scrape off loose seal whole wall using diluted PVA milky water... then fill around all edges once dry sand then seal again using diluted PVA.. ready for lining paper... if anything shows through lining paper... then you can fine fill after first coat of emulsion using a hard stop filler... paint and filler mixed together..
Scrapping off distemper can be a nightmare but in the end worth it. I hate it when some paint directly on bare or new plastic with full emulsion. When I see new plaster or wall bare I just thin down 1st coat
What do you do when the pain just will not come off? Im trying to sort a ceiling thats a millon years old with at least 100k layers of paint. How the hell do I get it off so it can be re painted?
Scrape what will come off leave the rest sand than clean clean the dust off the cavity than apply your PVA adhesive you want to apply your paint before the PVA dries up
Hi. Have you tried Zinsser peel stop ? Also did you chose this particular primer because its a water base and fairly mild compared to others on market. The reviews on it are terrible so i imagine its ideal for this particular task as its very thin?
PVA is a glue, not a primer, and its pretty thick. It was thin in this instance because the decorators watered it down to easier absorb into the bare plaster - they were using it like a stabiliser except its a glue not a stabiliser. These decorators like to use PVA but better practice would be to use a dedicated stabiliser followed by your two top coats. Some paints react to pva and then you have to start all over again. A google search confirms this.
im going to have to binge watch all these vids as im now stuck in house for 14 days,,,,, i told wife with covid 19 you better to rest than to do actives as exercise if any form can progressively make things work..... no choirs for me 😘😘😘
Is there such a thing as the pva been put on too thick and the paint not sticking either. And how to solve that? The paint in one of our rooms is not as bad as this but when you rub areas with a damp rag the paint comes with. What would your advice be here?
I’m having this exact issue. I just scraped away all the loose wall and I’m ready to follow you next steps. I’m making sure that I have this correct... Clean scraped area with PVA Prime all surfaces Sand Paint with vinyl matte paint? I’m a little confused after the initial priming step. There is no need to repair plaster?
Lot of preparation after removing wallpaper.. you need to remove paste by washing wall warm soapy water. Remove any loose paint.. seal wall using diluted PVA milky water.. fill any holes or edges of paint then sand and seal filler.. ready for first coat... you can do more filling after the first coat. Thanks
no and it's possible its not bonded with the plaster or painted surface. plaster needs sealing and paint work needs washing and sanding before painting. thanks
No old emulsion paints... and they use to put lead in oil based paints.. to make them more flexible... they stopped putting lead in oil based paint years ago...
😭my living room peeled off real bad and my dog didn’t help with that one Ha got a lot of work cut out for me take all the pain off How do I make it easy to come off
Always best to see if you can peel the surface off, sometimes the front will absorb water. So always best to test an area first. But patience and warm soapy water is best. Keep wetting and allow to soak it falls off eventually. We only ever use a steam stripper if it's not possible to wet and soak.. thanks
Your paint is peeling easy all over the wall. Mine only peels easy in spots but I need to remove it all. It looks like your walls are cement. Mine are old sheet rock with fifty year old wall paper under the paint. It must be oil base paint peeling off the old wall paper. Wish I could get the rest of it to come off. I may have to just remove the sheet rock.
It's cheaper to use and helps the paint stick better.. PVA ia a glue and diluted to a milky watery consistency it soakes right into the plaster. Thanks
PVA I think it’s not as satisfactory as BIN sealant is, isn’t it? Especially on those peculiar zones above&near by the skirting where ridges are located. Just an opinion.
I've got a similar problem only that it isn't coming off in big chunks, just little bits at a time, is there a way to make it come off easier & faster or is it just a grind til the end? Cheers.
not really warm water may help... sharp blade get underneath the edge better. but if it does not want to come off leave it... fill around the edge sand and it should be fine. thanks
Yeah right. Who is going to find that scenario ever... Falling off so easy. Old paint is so stuck to the wall especially when it is old and built up that you simply can't do that and it falls off magically. Give me a break.

You need to apply wall putty or whatever you call it (a filler), in place of the scrapped paint or it will look like .... you know what.

Was the old chalky paint, distemper. If so could a stabilising solution be used?
Yes.

The old paint has not been sealed before the new went on paint.
