    Apple has finally made a large screen MacBook Air. This is great for people who like big screens, so not Jonathan. Unless, it's so good it wins him over.

    I've found it's less about the size of the laptop and more about the weight. The 15" Air seems to be well within that threshold where you're "carrying" it, instead of "lugging" it. Also, not having to pinch your legs together so much when it's on your lap can make things way more comfortable.

    • @awwastor
      @awwastor Před 9 měsíci +14

      I have the exact opposite opinion tbh. Thickness is the least important for portability, yes it doesn't look great, but realistically that's not the dimension you're limited in, weight is a lot more important but still pretty easy to ignore up to a point (up to 2.5kg is 100% fine, over that gets tougher but is usually tolerable), while the width and height make it hard to fit in many places and, at least for me, harder to use as I can't even balance it very well on my legs.

    • @IanZamojc
      @IanZamojc Před 9 měsíci +7

      @@awwastor Weight is the thing I notice most. an extra 1 or 2 pounds may not sound like much, but when it's digging into your shoulder in a laptop satchel, you notice. Similarly, it being lighter means it's easy to move around regardless of size. If you can effortlessly pick it up by the corner, who cares what the width is.

    Its kinda neat how even with the same access to that hardware and tech (and probably even people) that the main LTT channel has, the MA channel can shoot these videos and have their own completely different feel and editing style. Its a great subtle touch that actual take quite a bit of skill to pull off.

      I dunno, I think they are covering all the bases from a marketing angle. LTT channel tends to rubbish Macs at every chance and Mac Address is simply there for this of us who use Macs - despite the rantings of the main channel.

      Mac Adress is awesome. As someone who switched away from an iPhone because of how restrictive Apple chooses to be (fdroid/third party store, launcher), these Videos are still great. They objectively talk about the products, while marking their opinion clearly.
      Most Apple-focused channels I found always shyed away from critiquing them, and only talk about the good things. I never manage to finish such videos. But MA finds a great balance while having great production quality.

    I used 13" macbooks (pros and airs) since 2010 and the move to macbook air 15" was pretty easy. The bezel is thin so it's not much larger than it has to be, its not too thick and not too heavy, kinda remind me the portability of 13" macbook pro. My main issue with this laptop is that the top of the screen (to the left and right of the notch) is unusable space, the only thing it can show is the macos top bar, and in full screen its just becomes black and unused for content. I don't like the notch but if it's already there, at least let me use the whole screen space around it.

    I'm with you on small laptops. My philosophy has always been that everything should be the best version of itself. For me, that means I have always loved the smallest, laptoppiest laptop to ever top a lap. When I traded in my 11" Intel-based MacBook Air for a 13" M1 Air, I already felt I was going too big.
    But I'm noticing that my eyes aren't quite as young as they used to be, so I sometimes struggle to read the fuzzy squiggles on my 13" screen. I'm thinking it's at least time to check out a larger screen. Like you, though, I'm pretty skeptical of the large size. So we'll see.

    I'm angling to upgrade from my 13" MBP from 2014 and will likely get the 14" MBP when I do. The Air is certainly nice, but as a developer I prefer access to at least 32GB of RAM (maybe with M3 on the Air), but also the Pro CPU is better for compiling, the display being 120Hz makes everything feel responsive, and the inclusion of an HDMI port to connect to most presentation hardware setups means one less dongle to carry around.
    Like you I very much prefer smaller laptops, though, so the 14" is the sweet spot for that. Sadly lots of employers think oh, you code all day and probably want a bigger screen, so my current employer gave me a massive 17" XPS and the client I was assigned to have me a 15" Lenovo, and I'm all cooooool, I hook this up to a single external display anyway. Fortunately both support USB-C for charging and video so I can use a single cable, but on the (admittedly rare) occasion I have to tote either around it's not fun, especially the 17" behemoth.

After taxes and the always unfair price conversion, the Air 15 base model *starts* at 1800 US. Anything above that and we're talking over 2000 dollars for even the smallest spec bump. One unknown fact is even with the M2 Pro the 13 and 15 won’t support two TB4 40gb/s devices at the same time, the second device operates at TB3 10 Gb/s speed. If you ask Apple about it bc the specs say two TB4 ports, they’ll just say that the spec site is not wrong, it’s just that you can’t use both ports a TB4 speed at the same time. They will tell you that you need to get a MacBook Pro for that.

    I've always gone with the largest laptop Apple makes (well, except my first MacBook Pro in 2007, where I had to settle for a 15" because the 17" at $2800 was just too dang expensive for high-school-me). For me, laptops mainly sit in one place, with the portability just being a bonus for when I want to roam, so getting the largest screen just made sense. But I've never needed the power offered by those larger machines, so it was a LOT of monetary waste to step up.
    The 15" Air solves that dilemma nicely... seemingly. With the release of the lower-end 14" M3 MacBook Pro, which for only $100 more than the 15" Air actually offers a higher resolution display, *that* could actually be the best way to go, if you're willing to scale the display. I'll need to try them side-by-side in the store, but on paper, it seems to really cannibalize the Air. Either way, when Apple releases the 15" M3 Air, they really ought to drop the price another $100 or so to stay competitive.

Sure this isn’t a problem if all you’ll ever need is 2 total screens, but maybe you already have two monitors, or you want to keep your desk setup clean with two similar monitors. At 2:15 you talk about the 15” Air better filling the big laptop pockets of “most bags.” I ended up preferring the 14” MacBook Pro because it goes in the other direction. The 14” MBP is smaller by just enough that it still fits easily into my slim, less bulky bag sized for my iPad and old 13” MBP. And the 14” MBP screen actually has more pixels than the 15” Air, so there is more actual room to spread out work. For 15 years I carried those 15” laptops. Thanks to the 14” MBP, my new rule is, don’t choose a laptop that will make me go back to hauling a bulkier full size backpack.

It certinaly feels expensive especially as the storage and memory specs could just as well have been from 2013. I do not think the prices of other computer brands have increased as much as for Apple (ca 15% increase from 2021 for the most relevant group in our CB; I think this is somewhat accurate; I looked up the cheapest Lenovo X1 carbon and it was about 15% more expensive than my expectation; but with 2023 specs 1TB and 16GB memory).

    I think it's the optimal size for a laptop, however I really want the SD caed reader som I'm sticking to my 14" for now and continue to use an old 15" Macbook pro from 2016 as well (which I just did a video on if anyone is interested in some thaughts on that one).

    I went with a 13" M1 iPad Pro because I figured there was no point in getting the 13" air without a touchscreen, and I've loved it. But if I could have gotten a non-pro laptop with a bigger screen I'd probably have chosen that. Now the question becomes, when my M1 iPad gets long in the tooth, do I replace it with an M3, or M4 iPad Pro? Or do I keep it as the media device and get a 15" Macbook Air for the video editing and heavier lifting...
