- Emergency Landing on Cargo Ship Alra by Sea Harrier ZA176
Remarkable news footage on the recovery of Sea Harrier ZA176 and Sub-Lt Ian Watson after the Alraigo docked in Santa Cruz, Tenerife, June 1983.
.
In 2007, Britain's National Archives released a number of Royal Navy files, and the second inquiry report was finally made public. Noting that Watson had completed only 75 percent of his training before he had been sent to sea, the board blamed Watson's inexperience, and his commanders for assigning him an airplane "not fully prepared for the sortie," a reference to radio problems. Nonetheless, Watson was reprimanded and given a desk job.
.
The ship's Captain is thinking - " so we're an aircraft carrier now?"
No mention of the amazingly skilled pilot who'd managed to land that white van there earlier.
Just imagine the poor van owner talking to his insurance company:-
That ship captain was like "I'm keeping this shit fuck you navy"
"Hello, boss? Guess where I'm calling you from..."
Nothing to be embarrassed about. This shows off the versatility of the aircraft and the skills of the pilot. Things are going to go wrong from time to time and it is a mark of character and competence to see how well you deal with it.
"I have always found standard carrier landings to be quite boring." -
Shipping insurance company : “would you like our extra total cover”
San Andreas logic
"I hear you have a rare Pokémon on board, Captain"
"oooohh shit!....this isn't the carrier"
Looks like he is so young he would have to ask his mum's permission to take the car.
The video says this is an embarrassment for the British but it's exactly this kind of cockup that makes us proud.
The plane was salvaged and placed back into service, and was retired in 2003. The pilot was placed on desk duty, but returned to flight service, accrued approximately 3000 hours of flight time before retiring in 1996
My husband saw this plane yesterday at Newark museum, in restored condition, what a great story for you to pass on to your children
reminds me of the day I landed an A380 on a macdonalds drive thru
Wow the Royal Navy is tough. Send him to sea with only 75% of his training, give him a plane when he's not prepared for the sortie and then when he gets himself into trouble but amazingly saves the plane, he's reprimanded and give a desk job.
the plane doesn't appear to be a total loss, even if only for spare parts and the pilot is alive and well... I'd say that it's a good day
He shouldn't have got in trouble. He saved the plane, now that's better than ditching the damn thing in the sea.
I was on Crash and Smash when this happened. I was on the Pickup and Transport Crew which bought it back to Yeovil. Excellent skills by the pilot.
