Calm, level headed, smart, and most importantly knows how to tell his boss (hot headed Tony) what they don’t want to hear, but in a way that gets thru, but doesn’t cross any boundaries.
Great character, and Stevie Van Zandt was brilliant in the role.

The more power that Tony grabbed the more unpleasant things became for the crew. Even from the get go they started out wacking a huge part of their organization in Junior's crew, and from there they lost guys due to infighting and the New York war.

Paulie is so good in this scene. Funny how is blank face is the most telling thing about the character.
Paulie feels like a different character early in the series. He became kind of a caricature as the show went on, though certainly still intimidating when he needed to be. This is probably the most nuanced and subtle scene I remember from him.
I agree on the early seasons he had genuine moments of clarity, especially that scene when Chris is depressed, but then again Paulie was getting old, and if am not mistaken he was in his sixties in the first season

Like the way he went from being terrified he might have killed Pussy by mistake and seemed heart broken, and then to the switch when Paulie says he refused to take his clothes off. You can almost see him go from being concerned for his friend to that realization that most likely Jimmy and Pussy are both rats
Man the way he does that shaking in his breath. Adds so much to the stress of the scene. The man was talented.

There by were so many great moments turned in by actors who one was prone to write off as merely functional, or even just comic relief. My favorite example of this was Adriana LaCerva, who was at first just a gum-cracking prop, but turned in a positively stunning performance in the episode in which she is murdered.

It's the small attention to detail like that was what made James Gandolfini's performance so incredible. It was like he thought of literally every single way to approach the scene, line delivery, physicality, ect. Some of the best acting in TV or film history.
This IS an incredible performance. The sad thing is that even after Tony tells Paulie that it's Jimmy, the look exchanged between them shows that they *both* still know Pussy was a rat. Agonizing.
No...the sad thing is that it wasn't Jimmy at all...they killed an innocent guy...what makes it even sadder is they did not even acknowledge his innocence or show any guilt for doing it

His son plays a good young Tony in 'The Many Saints of Newark' but it is obvious he was not an experienced actor, either, unlike his father. Plus, the fact that the TV show went on for 7 years helped all the actors hone their characters.

Look at how Tony’s smile fades when he learns that Pussy didn’t take his clothes off. He was so relieved to find out that Pussy wasn’t the rat, but now that suspicion can’t be put to rest. Masterful performance by Gandolfini.

What's crazy is it was so unusual at the time for a character to go through so many emotions in one scene. You just didn't see it in television until The Sopranos, and only Gandolfini could've pulled it off
yeah tony has the charisma and brain of a leader, but his multi-faceted personality and his humanness is what really makes his character so memorable. The constant contrast and internal battle he has between good and evil.

It's a great scene, for sure, and Gandolfini is incredible in it, no doubt, but Tony Sirico plays it perfectly as well. He's pissed, he's scared, he's on the knife's edge and most of all -- he's STILL. His character was always a little hyper but in this scene, he's perfectly still and focused. He did a great job making Gandolfini look great and did a terrific job himself.
First time I can remember seeing was in Get Shorty in which he plays a big strong “goof”. When Travolta puts him down & asks why he does it G gets kind of sheepish. Goes from tough guy to a mensch Great acting

Another one of Jim Gandolfini‘s best scenes is when he’s just recovering from his shotgun wound and he hast to act tough by taking out his driver in a fight, but then has to go to the bathroom and look at himself in the mirror and vomit and then look at himself and vomit again. Watch his eyes in that scene, he is so damn good.

I love the subtlety of this scene. You can tell how Tony already knows that Pussy is the rat, but he keeps denying it through his nervous interactions with his crew. He doesn't want to believe and keeps reiterating that Jimmy's the rat. Great acting by Gandolfini overall!

Jimmy was not a rat .just dum who got wacked by mistake.
Madeline Monahan obviously you don't remember Jimmy's reaction in the hotel room when Silvio came out of the closet to whack him and asked if he had his lil radio to call for help. That gave it away that he really was a rat.
After watching the series over and over I realized there's many incidents where Tony denies something or acts totally childish and scared about something, the first time watching the series I felt more on Tony's side but after a bunch of times how scary and twisted of a soul Tony has and why he's like this
@@coreydean6540 you dont remember when Jimmy gets out and he goes to Tony's house in the basement he starts acting all weird and starts asking Tony questions about incriminating things and just keeps asking and asking like he's recording him or trying to catch something, Jimmy was definitely also a rat.
