    Spreading is the correct method, It is the only way to guarantee appropriate coverage. Many thermal paste manufacturers include a spreader for this very reason - why else would they waste money including one? I am glad you have shown the "normal" sized dot is wrong as I have been telling people for 20 years. This advice is expecially true with Ryzen or HEDT chips which have a larger heatspreader (e.g. Threadripper, EPYC).

      A properly applied Cross X with a Cooler applied with enough pressure, the results will hardly change compared to the spreading method i think, which is also pretty time consuming tbh... so if youre not using a high end threadripper, the Cross X should be perfectly fine.
