DIY ebike that's Front Wheel Drive with Gears [500 watt DC motor] chain drive

  • I made a front wheel drive ebike using a 500 watt DC brushed motor, I'm also using gears! 6 speeds on the front of the bike I'm not sure if anyone has tried the gear thing yet but the idea popped into my head so I had to try it out. I converted a scarp bike into a FWD ebike the only new parts were 500 watt DC brushed motor, 24v 500 watt controller also two 10 Ah batteries rough cost about 112$ USD. So why even do this when you can just use a BLDC hub motor? so here's why, the main reason was cost hub motors are way more expensive where I live but prices are all over the place and I only buy DC motors if the price is decent also I like chain drive. In some places you can buy hub motors new and used pretty cheap also lithium batteries so go with a hub motor than. I do not recommend building this, if the chain comes off and goes into the front wheel you know what will happen, you may become supper man and fly over the handle bars, but your landing wont be so graceful.. If you want to try this out please read, first off the lowest gear on the cassette on my wheel is to small for this motor it will only assist you up a hill with that said it might be just my week controller or battery combo but I have feel even with stronger controller and batteries it wouldn't make a huge difference. I suggest not using the gears, the motor comes with a 25H pinion it would work better to use a larger 25H sprocket like 80t on the wheel and just one single freewheel bearing for the sprocket. It might not go as fast but would be way better I prefer torque over top end speed.

    Your creativity is great!
    Builds with hubmotors would be easier, but you go the harder way and like the challenge.:-)
    Also front motor with gears is complicated. You show how it's done.

    im very curious for a propulsion variant targeted for hi speed with only a 250 watt e-scooter electronics. like, can we repurpose ecooter junk to make hi speed stuff ?

    Have Milwaukee m18 batteries. Be interesting to see if can do as much as you did with them.

      I looked up those batteries so they are 18v 5ah each. One idea If you have two you could use them with a 36v controller, but the distance will be less.

    I also built a bike with the same controller and motor but it doesnt run. The 12 or 24 volts of the batteries come to the controller and to the power lock, but not to the motor.
    Can you help me please? I dont understand the power lock, i just sticked a piece of wire in the lock and connected bove of the contacts.
    Also my bike falled to side and I held it on the throttle grip and accidently it teared of. I reconnected the spring in the hole and the grip seems to work again.
    But why doesnt the current go to the motor?

    nice job. I built a 2 stroke 49cc version of this a few years back. I drove it about 1500 miles before I eventually stressed the main bike frame and it started to crack. I did repair it and reinforced it, but I never really trusted it after that. so if I were to build it again I would have located the engine where you put your motor instead of in front of the wheel.     The build is great except for one thing. Gearing. I am very familiar with those Unite motors and I build e bikes. It is a 2,500-rpm motor which will require a 90-tooth wheel sprocket if using a 26-inch wheel an 80 for a 20-inch wheel. Looks like gearing is for > 50 mph which will burn out the motor up any hill and be very inefficient. Proper gearing for a 500-watt motor is 20 mph. 15 mph is better for up big hills.

      I am currently building a front wheel drive with a 36V - 1,000W Unite motor. At 36V it is 3,000 rpm at 30V rpm is 2,500 and am using a 20-inch wheel. Power is 833 watts at 30 volts and a 9 tooth 8mm motor and 62 tooth wheel gives a modest 21.66 mph gearing which will be decent up most hills. His building skills are far greater than mine as I use wood as don't know how to weld. If you Google top speed and gear ratio calculator electric scooter parts have that. They also have 8mm roller chain and a wide variety of sprockets. If the guy who posted the video reads this, I would like his opinion on belt drives. I never did one but would like to. I wish I could meet him. I did read the rest of what he said and see that he said an 80 tooth is better, so he knows his build is only ok for the flat. The gears and shifting is genius but would require a motor with lower KV / rpm to work great.

      I watched the video again and the 8-tooth motor sprocket did help him, like to know where he got it. I never saw an 8 tooth before. Looks like around 44 mph gearing if the largest gear on the cassette is a 32T. My idea I would like to share with him is a 90 KV brushless RC motor. They can push 2,800 watts or even more. At 24V the rpm is 2,160 and speed is 38.68 mph. Power would need to be > 2,000 watts and there are a lot of RC motors that can do that.

      I run very heavy Lishen - 18 Ah - LTO batteries. I bought 24 of them with my stimuli's $$$$. I have two 8S packs which are 20V each and a two 10V - 4S packs. They weigh a lot. 20V = 16 pounds. Why I am interested in a 20V build. I run a 1,800W brushless motor at 50V - LTO. Speed is > 32 mph on the flat but battery weight is ridiculous. Over 45 pounds.

      Thanks! for the awesome feed back, and it helps all of us with are builds. I did this video as an experiment but quickly changed out to a 80 tooth 25H, I made another video. It's way better now but I agree a 92 tooth would be awesome for this small motor.

    what happens if the chain comes off at high speed do you go over the handlesbars?

      Ha Ha yeah that was a concern at first, It did fall off once up hill under load, seems to always just drop straight down. I was thinking of covering the spokes just in case.

      Thanks! 👍 I made another video, I removed cassette and added a larger sprocket. It's way better now and it will climb hills.

      @@kurtscottage It always amazes me how many people make these and don't use a large drives sprocket I realize you can only go so big before you have to switch to motorcycle wheels but I would personally want to travel at least 30 mph max since I know I can pedal that fast at top speed.

      You could use one with a 12v controller and motor, 24v is better tho. 12v 10Ah lead acid batteries

      True I saw the exact same motor in 36v 500 watt. The windings should be different in both motors, but who really knows unless you test or take them apart. ✌
