Say you bought a key and later you swap your motherboard. All you have to do is link the key to your Microsoft account and after you install the new motherboard it should automatically update the key from your Microsoft account. And you can use a key on 5 different devices. So 1 key 100$ on 5 devices is basically $20/device.
BTW most recently with windows 11, when you activate windows it gets tied with your Microsoft login, meaning when you change anything just log in again and you’re set.
Actually, I don't know how about countries outside of Europe, but in Europe you can activate your windows with the same key after swapping motherboard, cpu or whatever other component. The keys which are 100$ are across all devices and they are not hardware stored. The hardware stored keys are cheaper and usually they come when you buy a laptop or a mounted pc with preinstalled OS.
10 years ago now, I built my first PC. I payed $120 for a legitimate Windows key. It was basically 1/6th the cost of the whole computer. In that time I have built 5 computers since (though I'll never move on from my first, GTX 970 goated). I have not purchased Windows since. What people don't seem to know is that you can easily move Windows licenses between machines as long as it is tied to your Microsoft account. And it still lets you upgrade free every time. Bought Windows 7 pro, now I'm on Windows 11 pro 10 years later. But then again, it's Microsoft so i wouldn't be surprised if they stop honoring that deal in the near future. But I definitely got my money's worth.
The first microsoft account you use on the new system is linked with the license so if you reinstall windows and sign in with that same account you still have the full windows experience.
The only reason why you lose your activation when you swap motherboards is because you bought an OEM key which locks it to the motherboard and won’t let you use it on your new “PC” even though you just swapped the motherboard for that you buy the retail key which stores the license on your storage drive
If you swap ram cpu or motherboard you don’t lose anything only if you swap the ssd or hdd cause the windows is stored on those drives so I recommend that if you swap parts just keep the drives and install them the moment you got the parts because it saves you money

aslong as you keep the key code somewhere you can reuse it as many times as you want. The only thing is I think it deactivates the last computer. So you can't have it on multiple internet connected computers
Swapping motherboard, cpu and ram no longer warrants the need for a new windows key. The windows key is assigned to your Microsoft account when you initially add the key to a computer
If you have a box license you don't lose it with hardware upgrades, just go to your Microsoft account and transfer license to the new hardware. Bro just use an activation key from a school for free 😂 A lot of schools have a deal with Microsoft where they get a handful of activation keys that are valid for thousands of PC’s… and they’re usually listed on a sticker on the back
You can tie a activation key to your account, so anytime you make major changes to your system, so long as you use the same boot drive, you can reactivate the windows key. At least on 10. I refuse to use 11.
Actually you can revoke an activation key on the mobo, you can also use a utility to pull the code if you bought it pre installed, then deactivate it through MS and use it on another machine. Not friendly for consumers but it is doable.
You could always just crack it fairly easily by connecting it to a Chinese activation server. Been doing this for over 10 years and have never had any issues or malicious activity on my devices.
OG people know that if you linked in Microsoft account two windows and if you bought windows in a different device, it transfers over and gets rid of the water mark
those windows keys that you lose when changing hardware are the $15 ones, the full $100 gets linked to your microsoft account so each time you log in it'll activate windows, either way you can just crack it REALLY easily, I always do it and have never paid for windows
I found out recently that if you bought a key off the microsoft store its tied to your account and not directly the motherboard so if you go into the activation settings and say you recently changed hardware you can just login to activate windows again.
That's why you get the retail key, not an OEM key. Retail keys can be transferred between devices, and reactivated after hardware change. OEM keys are intended for manufacturers like Dell or HP for pre-builts and laptops. They're sometimes cheaper because they're bought in bulk and resold, but can only be activated once.
I think you're mis-understanding how Windows keys work. The 15$ keys are OEM keys, totally genuine Microsoft keys meant for OEM Manufacturers like HP, Dell, etc... OEM keys are intended for prebuilt computers, and can only be activated on one motherboard, hence they're cheap. The 100$ keys sold by Microsoft are known as CD Keys, and they can be activated on as many computers as you want, but usually only one at a time. So as long as you keep hold of that CD key, theoretically you never have to buy Windows again.
You got something mixed up here, there is different types of windows keys and the one that locks to your motherboard is called a OEM key, which is those cheap 10$ ones and they are legit 90% of the time, and the ones that is like 100 smth dollar is called retail key, which can be swapped between computers, don’t mix them up
i swapped my motherboard, cpu, and ram 6 months ago. still have my windows key. didn’t even have to activate again, it just worked i’ve only ever had one key for over 10 years and i never even paid for it, i took it from a prebuilt
I just had this discussion with my brother because he thought the same. You don't lose your windows key when you change your hardware. It's not the simplest thing to figure out how to reregister your new hardware, I'm sure that is by design. I can't recall how because i did it 3 years ago, but It is 100% a myth that you have to rebuy windows. Hell i just changed my mb ram and cpu 6 months ago, and my gpu 2 months ago, and I didn't need to reregister anything.
I changed my entire build couple weeks back, different ram, different cpu, different mb, everything except my drives, and it works fine and it doesn’t have the watermark

I found out recently that if you bought a key off the microsoft store its tied to your account and not directly the motherboard so if you go into the activation settings and say you recently changed hardware you can just login to activate windows again.
Haircuts are like $35-$50 and our hair grows back. You can afford a windows key that works from those website. Saved me hella money on Windows 11 Pro
You can reuse the key, and minor hardware changes shouldn't affect the activation status. I've kept the same license and changed a lot of components.
You can also just use cmd thing or batch file to do it for free, that’s what I normally do
That's why you get the retail key, not an OEM key. Retail keys can be transferred between devices, and reactivated after hardware change.
OEM keys are intended for manufacturers like Dell or HP for pre-builts and laptops. They're sometimes cheaper because they're bought in bulk and resold, but can only be activated once.
«One minute you’re buying Windows keys, next minute it’s signing you for chaturbate premium» my fav carter quote rn
Spent 13$ on cdkeys 6 years ago, pcs been fine since, even when I upgraded most of the parts
You got something mixed up here, there is different types of windows keys and the one that locks to your motherboard is called a OEM key, which is those cheap 10$ ones and they are legit 90% of the time, and the ones that is like 100 smth dollar is called retail key, which can be swapped between computers, don’t mix them up
i swapped my motherboard, cpu, and ram 6 months ago. still have my windows key. didn’t even have to activate again, it just worked
i’ve only ever had one key for over 10 years and i never even paid for it, i took it from a prebuilt
Dude out here buying 100 pairs of air pods and complaining about $100 😂😂😂😂
My father bought a copy of MS-DOS in the 80s
We estimate that he gave enough money to Microsoft for that and just use batch files
I am not even your parent but every time I see you I understand what my parents feel when they see me.
Understandable but you can just do it once it have your window key locked to your account so it won’t matter if you change your computer parts
the same person who dont care to spend another apple airpod after lost it in hotel
windows activation is now tied to your Microsoft account, I've had the same one for years despite changing pcs several times
Bro just use transparenttb and some editing on paint (or a video software if you want spicy animations) then just make the taskbar look right then just slap the image (or video) to a wallpaper software. BOOM you changed both taskbar color and the bg photo
A small thing that makes my setup better is stopping every 5 mins to do the thug shake
Actually you can get your windows key from cmd before swapping any components and reuse it :D i had a laptop with windows 11 home, built a pc and used cmd to get my windows code and then just used it. Now i have windows from the same key on two devices lmao
But you do know that Microsoft is trying to make it so windows keys are linked to Microsoft accounts so you just buy one and it’s forever… right?…
I have a laptop so it automatically links the activation key to my Microsoft account so if I were to build a pc i could just transfer it over easy af.
