Being a cam girl is way riskier for a teacher than a phone sex operator. But then again, finding a phone sex operator would be 1000% harder to do since they wouldn't be taking calls from home; they work in call center like places. And it's not like those places would be keeping outstanding records.
Even if they worked from home (and some actually do), the calls would usually still run through the company lines. These days, they'd have VOIP connections or similar, so it would be pretty hard to find out where the actual person is, because you'd only get to the servers of the service they work for.

Yeah, pretty sure a lot of the Criminal Minds episodes would be Howdunits as opposed to Whodunits. I like them because you get to spend more time in the killers mind/life/motivations. When it's not so much about Who, you're left with How and Why.
I'm honestly baffled that the "howcatch'em" model of detective stories popularized by columbo hasn't caught on a larger share of the mystery genre. Think of the many cop shows where the mystery is secondary to the banter between the team of investigator (NCIS, mentalist, castle, lucifer). revealing the killer early to give the spotlight to their motivations and the relationship they have with the detectives seems like a massive improvement on the formula.
Rather than have the killer be a vaguely dickish person you see "randomly" in the first ten mn of the episode, and never appear again until the final reveal (because making the character interesting would draw attention) you could give the role to a strong character actor and have them clash or bond with the investigator, making the whole thing much more dramatically satisfying.
@@maximeteppe7627 I'm not sure, but I *think* my WIP detective story is like that. I don't think of it as a whodunnit; I think I'm trying to have my cake and eat it too by focusing on "who was it dun to?" but also having a profiler side character looking at the "why dun it"?
@@MB-lz5eb if you don't have a "whodunit" but a "whoisitdunto" that'd be a very different story.
I'd recommend looking up some Jane/John Doves and read their stories. It'll give you some perspective as to what is important with people who are still unidentified.
Maybe a "why dun it" is important, but you can't fully answer that if you don't know "Who dun it" or "who was it dun to"
The "why" is super tied up in the "who", "what", "where" and much more.
The why can be something small as "they were there", but the why is still super important.
I don't know your book at all, nor any of the themes or characters, I'm just pointing out something I've noticed in true crime. A lot of true crime youtubers will glorify the "who" and the "How", so just be careful not to go into that. Make the "who" an absolute fool, just like most real life murderers are. Make the "who" unimpressing, make the victim important, even if it's not to the murderer, they are important to someone. If they don't know who it is, the motivation should always be "this was a person, they need to have their name" and not "this is a body, let's see how much we can objectify it, until the actual identity isn't important"
@@JDM-is-my-name The "star" I have in mind for the "whositdunto" isn't a John Doe, investigators know who he was. He's a cop or forensics expert who worked with the police (leading investigators to believe that he was killed for investigating the serial killer). Maybe the detective's motivation could be "I don't have a personal stake in this, but I know that the victims had loved ones who'd want the serial killer to be caught."
Girl...I accidentally got wrapped up in Brazen. I thought it was a murder mystery, only to be smacked in the face with the dollar store Dominatrix. I understood nothing. I don't know why I finished this movie.
As a person that worked their way through college at a bookstore in a very conservative area...my favorite thing in the world was bible thumpers that would regularly spend 50 a week on trash novels, but then bitch we sold Playboy. Like hey, at least the dudes buying porn knew what they were buying, hid it between other items, and sometimes flat out avoided having me ring up their purchase. The amount of times I had someone try to use a school discount on romance novels, and then act uppity when we challenged if the book with Fabio 2.0 was actually for the school.
If someone has different tastes or morals than me i can respect that (depending on the subject of course), but hypocrites are the worrrrrst
I was legit puzzled that anybody would care this much about Milano being cast (frankly Milano being cast feels par for the course for a Lifetime/Fifty Shades knockoff from Netflix). First of all, Nora Roberts has been adapted enough times that I feel like these movies come out of vending machines at this point so it's not like it's some sacred cow. Also, for a group that likes to rail so hard against cancel culture, this just feels textbook of what they supposedly hate so much but really if a performer being liberal is all it takes for them to stay away, I'd question if they've watched like literally any movie ever

(Sometimes I’d ask if they liked the class, what else are they reading, is it a difficult class, is it for your major, why did you choose to take the class, etc etc. Sometimes they could play along for a WHILE which was fun lol)

Normally I avoid any kind of social interaction like the plague, but somehow, imagining myself in that situation, talking to a complete stranger about books and reading, feels... almost comfortable? I want to see a reverse of this sort of premise. A story from a detective's perspective working on a case and this mystery novel writer keeps butting in. But make it not romantic. Let us see the detective's stress, their inner thoughts, make us sympathize with the one trying to do their job, not the one that's being an idiot.
I can't even imagine a group of filmmakers pitched this to the studio and thinking that this is a great concept that could attract some 15 year olds who are fans of Fifty Shades and the studio wanted to finance it
If you go to chris and jahns' channels, the fifty shades trilogy is on their F movies and dogshit movies list. Those movies deserve it.

My Mom and I were gifted the first one by a 45 y/o teacher friend when they first came out and… booof I have a history with SA and abusive relationships and while I powered my way through Twilight to be "allowed" to explain why (most) of the writing was F tier dog crap, I got exactly as far as the third page, knew what was coming, couldn't stand Ana's endless drivel internal monologue, and quit. My mom was (legitimately) forced to finish it due to her friend, and _hates_ that book and blocked the really graphic stuff out completely. I know she skimmed most of the s^x scenes because: weird crap + s^xual abuse + plus bad portrayals of erotica as a whole… yeah I think she told me she got to where he was whacking her… sensitive part of her "hoo-ha" with a riding crop and NOPED out of there and skimmed/skipped ever s^x scene.
It was funny to me that, like Twilight before it, but for the older crowd, a woman in my family was being forced to read a terrible book to explain to her friends why she hated it so much because "you can't judge it until you've read it" which is _so_ dumb.

Omg I was so embarrassed when I watched this movie. The genre of romantic suspense has some really, really good books, but adapting them into a movie is almost always a recipe for disaster. Also, lines like "once isn’t going to be enough" are corny in the source material already; they translate even worse onto the big screen.
Right?! I agree… so much garbage out there and after awhile there isn’t any mystery left because everyone has figured it out by the second chapter. Add in the corniness and it’s just unreadable. 🙄

Crazy how I predicted that the boy that talked to the sister at the school (weasel kid) after the murder was the killer. He was asking to many questions about the case and sent flowers to the funeral. It was soooo obvious! I wasn’t surprised at the end
I downloaded this "movie" to watch during a flight and it was frankly an embarrassing experience. When the "once isn't gonna be enough" line came on i felt so sad for Alyssa who had to be there and actually listen to these nonsense live. I would have instantly passed out, as like a coping mechanism.

I’m not even kidding, I figured out who the killer was in the first 10 minutes. I just thought they would reveal everything in a creative or suspenseful way and that maybe he would have a good reason for killing her. My god I was wrong. Completely anticlimactic.

Honestly, I watched this with my sister a few days ago. We were starting to think that the teacher sister was actually still alive and that it was all a set up by her and the thriller writer to frame the ex-husband for the sister's murder. After that, rich writer aunt gets custody of the son and goes to live with her, while the actually still alive sister lives with them.
Why would we think this? Because of the conversation the detective and the writer had during their date; alluding to a locked room mystery that's only possible if the supposed victim were actually alive, and that the coroners had been bribed by the rich author to fake her death.
Would need a lot of tweaking to make it work, but bam, more interesting mystery. But yeah, this movie was pretty milk toast.
Can someone fill me in on why the 2nd detective keeps being called crazy hair? Seems like a normal man with grey hair and an afro to me... not sure why that needed to be a thing. Did I miss something?

So, as a fan of Criminal Minds, I'd say the format works in that show because often times, you're not so much invested in the serial killer du jour, but rather, you're invested in the protag team. You bond with the FBU characters and enjoy their dynamics and personalities, so a lot of the entertainment is watching them actually encounter / facedown the one they're hunting. This format doesn't necessarily work in a movie setting because the characters are all fresh, unless the point of the movie is to play up the cat-mouse chase between the protag and the killer.
Start writing that book Amanda. Sounds like a good time in the making.

I've not read the book, but Nora Roberts is definitely not a bad writer of the mystery/thriller stories. I just started the 49th book in the 'In Death' series (which Are set in the future😂) she writes as J. D. Robb, so can kinda attest to that I think🤓
My friend and I were on the hunt for a good crime movie on Netflix, we found this and it sounded good. Ten minutes in, we are cringing and we have the whole plot figured out. We ended up waching "El Desorden que Dejas", and that was good shit

Not gonna lie, I saw the "Before Trilogy" you listed and for a hot second mixed it up with the After series, and I thought "you consider those great romance movies?!" Then I realized it must be "Before Sunrise" from Linklatter (sp?) and the others. Whew lol
I didn’t see any of the Before trilogy but I have seen Romeo + Juliet as well as Titanic and I wouldn’t call either of them good romances. Well acted especially in the case of Romeo + Juliet is really debatable.
Honestly most of the romance genre is full of mediocre romances and toxic relationships. Especially their insistence of saying that they are “good” relationships.
(Note: I am saying this while actively enjoying quite a bit of questionable romance relationships I’m just pointing out that most of the genre is ugly.

I went to college in a small midwest town and let me tell you the second hand bookstore was at least 50% trashy romance novels, they heavily outnumbered the James Patterson books
The mystery genre where you see the crime at the beginning and the tension is around how the cops will solve it became big with 'Columbo' in the 1970s and is referred to as a "how catch 'em" thriller, rather than the traditional "who done it."
I was perplexed by the whole Nora Roberts thing, because I thought that was Chandler Bing's mother 🤣

I am a die hard Nora Roberts fan. I own literally every one of her books other than some of the latest In Death series. I started reading them when I was 13 in 2004 when I found one at a thrift store and I got hooked. With that expertise in mind I can tell you that a lot of her oldest books are not very good. They were written to be grabbed by publishers who did bodice rippers until she finally was able to write something more her own style. So right from the get-go they did not pick a good one. On top of that there has never been a good movie adaptation of her books made. They're all cookie cutter bland nonsense that manage to miss any spunk and life in the characters that came across on paper. One day maybe they'll do her justice, one day.
Also I hate that a bunch of her fans are apparently trumpests, that makes me feel icky to be lumped in with them D:
Agreed, I think La Nora pretty much toed the line until she was big enough to write what she liked (a lot like Heinlein except she didn't get all weird about it).
I actually read all of her books last year except this one, although I did try it. This was one of the worst ones they could have chosen, it's really not a great example of her work.

And Divine Evil has the potential to be an excellent movie, it's just so visual with the animal heads and stuff.

I was actually really surprised when I found out that a lot of her fans are on the right. She's always been pretty ahead of her time when it comes to POC and queer people existing in her stories - imo the best rep is people just being allowed to be around and live their lives, you know? So I was kind of surprised.

I'm making my way through the In Death series, on book 10 now. If you don't mind my asking, what were some of your favs of hers in that genre? Always looking for suggestions, haha 😄

@@brucasroxx well her In Death series is very very long now so that should cover you for a while, but she also has some stand alone ones. A few I would recommend mystery wise are, Northern Lights, Angel's Fall, Birthright, and The Villa.

I’m so glad you made this video. It was sooooo terrible. Yikes. And the absolute cringe of dressing up as your dead sister to lure her killer is so cringe and convoluted?! And the “spicy” scene made me want to gag.
Even worse, she had to squeeze into her recently deceased sister's latex clothes, which... if you've ever worn surgical gloves, imagine that for your whole body. It's usually an absolute disaster for first time wearers without assistance, in and out.
I remember brad jones(cinema snob) reviewing it a few days ago. It already looked like a cash grab fifty shades, and that's the better i can say.
I still remember Chris stuckmann and Jeremy jahns painfully sitting through the fifty shades 'perfect trash' trilogy and reviewing it on their channels respectively. They later celebrated after the trilogy concluded. Even when i watched the movies, I ordered five large pizzas and coke to just celebrate after disaster called fifty shades ended.
It only brought PAIN. It hurts.

i started this video, then heard the name Nora Roberts and decided to look her up, because she sounded familiar. I don't think I've read anything by her, but by sheer probability I must have seen some of her books at the library because she has a whopping 225 published. 225? shes been writing for 40 years professionally. that's almost 6 a year. I read this and i was like holy shit, that's gotta be crazy hard to maintain without burning out. but then...
i was led down the route of looking up the most prolific authors and... im genuinely terrified at these absolute monsters. ursala bloom published 500 romance novels in her lifetime. barbara cartland wrote (a record) 23 books in one year, and published 723 books total. ryoki inoue has a record holding 1075 works published. charles hamilton wrote 100 million words in his lifetime (also a record). I cant comprehend that. he only lived to 85, and started publishing when he was 20. so, i 65 years, 100 million words. What....what are we talking about here? 1.5 million words a year? do we have confirmation these were human beings?

I saw a video about Enid Blyton recently and thought there was a typo when they said she’d written over 700 books. Surely that’s supposed to be “over 70” (which i still consider a lot, even for shorter/simpler children’s lit)? Nope, she wrote 762 books.
idk about the others but afaik roberts does treat writing like a corporate full time job. youtuber kat cavanaugh did an experiment writing like nora roberts and ... yeah, it was pretty packed, lol.
I remember reading a Nora Roberts book in high school and getting so mad at it that I literally threw it across the room. What I don't remember is why or even the title of the books, which after seeing this I can only assume was my brain putting that info on lockdown in order to protect me.

Coincidentally, I just watched this movie last night, and I have already accepted that I will never get that time back. I share your consternation with this travesty of a train wreck. Something I have noticed is that romance novels include dialogue that no actual person would ever utter. It sounds comical when you see it on the screen and hear them actually say the words. Additionally, when the cop says to Grace that he doesn’t know what he would do if anything happened to her, I literally threw popcorn at my TV and yelled “You have only known her for three days, ya douche!” It is ridiculous how the romance went from zero to pants off with absolutely no chemistry between the two main stars. What do I know though? I fast forwarded through all those scenes! LOL thank you for a thoroughly entertaining review of a totally crap movie. Would like to see more of these, ATJ! 👍😀💜
I usually love watching anything with Alyssa Milano in it,(Even the Double Dragons movie), but I couldn't even make it passed the preview of this one. I would totally read anything bu Amanda Cullen....DO IT!

I kept thinking their was going to be some kind of big reveal... but there never was. I laughed out loud when he removed his mask at the end in a big dramatic way and omg its exactly who we all new it was. I feel like this had potential but it just wasn't realized. I've also been a big fan of Milanos since charmed but this was a let down of a come back.

Before Dating Apps & Social Media Sites, people would hook up through personal ads in newspapers & ads in the back of special interest magazines. There were thrillers about "lonely hearts" killers who answered personal ads & of course killers who targeted exotic dancers/phone sex operators/sex workers in general or just authors who wrote sexy books. It's a well worn trope. Oddly enough in the late 80s/early 90s there was a lot of paranoia around computer stalking, stranger danger online even though online presence wasn't anything near what it is now. Privacy, anonymity, hacking & personal safety have always been a concern with accessing the web. And porn ---it's always been there too. (I don't why they don't just make a dot porn designation at this point)

as soon as you said "nora roberts" i said "oh my gooooosh" out loud. it was years since ive heard that name. i remember being a child and seeing my mother read her books. 9 year old me took that swamp of louisiana book and read it, since mom said it had "supernatural elements" and i was a total goff who liked ghosts.
Your segue about Criminal Minds perfectly touched on why I stopped watching the show. In the early seasons you never knew who the killer was (if they were shown at all it was in shadow or profile). I think it was around the 4th or 5th season they started consistently showing the killer very early to tell parts of the story from their perspective. A lot of people liked that but it seemed like a weird shift to me.
All the time I was just waiting for Phoebe to tell him that she has visions of the future sometimes and uses these to write her novels.

I don't think there's a movie of it, but the novel "Closer Than You Think" by karen rose is the most batshit combo romance/thriller novel I've ever read. There's a scene where the two main characters are crouched down on top of each other avoiding sniper fire, and it takes time to mention how rock hard the detective male lead is. During the sniper incident. Like it is a sexy thing.
A movie that’s better regarding the idolization of a person in Perfect Blue. It’s animated and it shows not just how other people can project their ideologies/fantasies into another person, it shows the “idol” can lose their sense of who they are too. Highly recommend it and would love to see a video on what you think, Amanda the Jedi!

Nora Roberts IS sci-fi writer. She has an entire series set in the future about a police officer in a world with outlawed guns, flying cars and sustainable living on other planets. I highly recommend it.
