The fine folks over at Morningstar Engineering were kind enough to send over one of their amazing MC6 MKii midi controller pedals for me to pair up with the HX Stomp. I must say it is a killer combination and Morningstar has really knocked it out of the park with this controller. In this video I talk about how we can set it up to control some common functions in our HX Stomp. Please check out the second video I have up in the Morningstar series talking about how we can use the MC6 to turn the single button looper into a full featured looper.

All I can say is thank you. Just bought both of these for my bass rig. You’ve saved me hours and hours. Much appreciated.
My pleasure Jason :-)
Jason, thanks for this video! I've struggled to understand midi, but your tutorial makes it crystal clear now! From a user's perspective, the guys at Morningstar really are light years ahead in the controller game.
That is awesome Tim and glad I could help :-)
Just ordered mine. Thank you Jason, your channel is always a learning experience.
Awesome and thank you so much Rob :-)
THANK YOU!!! I was considering this to expend my HX Stomp’s possibilities and you clearly explained a lot making understanding/using it easier down the line... 🤘🏻😈🤘🏻
Great video thank you for publishing. Just purchased an MC8, superb piece of kit.
I think this may be the answer I've been seeking for my Helix Native studio use. Thank for for this video. I have more research to do, but I think this is the way. I liked, and subscribed because of this video.
Awesome glad it was of use to you :-)
Great Video. Great product, I'm amazed the manufacturer's don't do a better job explaining the information.
Great video. Just got one and set it up today to connect to helix. I wanted to use it to select snapshots to free up 10 buttons for stomps. The toughest prob was indicating which snap is currently selected. I found it possible to combine the use of toggle mode, blink and clear toggle on other buttons to get a pretty usable setup. Love this device!
Thank you so much Ken :-) Definitely a flexible unit and glad you are enjoying yours!
Excellent video -- exactly the information I was seeking! Subscribed!
Thank you and so glad it was helpful :-)
You had me at 'Rush'!
Thanks for the tutorial from a scratch! The explanation is much clearer than morningstar chanel does it..Great, step by step without further ado)) Thank you 😊
Fantastic piece of kit .. great review and demo 😎
Jonny, thanks brother :-)
Tremendously helpful. Thanks!
Very cool buddy! I have been excited to see this one!!
Thanks buddy :-) It is a great unit ...hope you enjoy!
Awesome information!!
Thanks so much Paulie :-)
This is not as easy as expected. But extremely awesome.
Thank you for this
Thank you so much Jason, I watched your video when I was first looking in MC6MKII and finally took the plunge!!! I was very informative and really broke it down quite well, I’m indebted to you and Morningstar is lucky to have you making this video because otherwise it would have been too confusing for some myself included 🤘🏻
That is great and so happy I could help :-)
Great video, I was wondering if the morning star can be programmed to change between modes (snapshot, stomp, preset) on the HX stomp.
I’m thinking of using one of these to control an HX FX and HX Stomp simultaneously.
Jason, curious if you have tried the Jet Micro and if so, thoughts vs Morningstar MC6. Originally was looking at the Mission Engineering TT-2, then saw the Jet Micro and the rabbit hole gets deeper and deeper....
You could basically have as many snapshots as you want with this thing, you could just send multiple CC messages to change parameters etc with one click, that's awesome.
It does make things very flexible :-)
Hello Jason, great video!!! I have a question for you. Is it possible to program the MC6 to switch between the 4 modes the HX Stomp has; "Stomp Mode", Scroll Mode, Preset Mode and Snapshot mode into a single button on the MC6 II? If so can guide me to the right direction? Thanks
have you encounter delay response when you switch to other buttons using program change?
any suggestion, thanks
Hi Jason,
I have purchased this on your recommendation, and I am impressed so far. Is there a way to copy the FS 3 tap tempo/ delay? I know you can do the tuner on a single press, but I’d like to use a long press for the tuner, and taps to set the tempo, all on the same button.
Hey Darren, it is totally possible and I have a video coming out this afternoon about it :-)
Great video! Quick question..i don’t like having to tweak stuff using software. Can i assign blocks via the learn feature in the hx stomp?
Thank you :-) You can to a certain degree but still need to setup the MC6, which is MUCH easier to do via software.
I don't know if you realize that when you turn the switch on in the MC6 turns off the delay and reverb in the Helix, can it be fixed?.....
Does the HX Stomp talk back to the MC6? For instance if the MC6 was used to control effect block states and the Stomp to change snapshots and say Snapshot1 had delay and snapshot 2 was without, when I switch between the two snapshots would the effects block on/off status on the MC6 update depending if it was on or off on the hx stomp? hope that makes sense!
Can i send a CC from the MC6, and program the HX to change more than one parameter using the Learn fonction. I know Snapshot do this, but really need to know if what i asked is possible
EXEMPLE = MC6 send cc84, STOMP changes BASS and MID level at the same time.
Great video. What i would also like to see though is how can we send midi commands from HX Stomp to MC6 so e.g when i change a preset in Stomp using its footswitches,it sends midi to MC6 to toggle to the corresponding bank for the specific preset in order let's say to turn blocks on-off.
Thanks so much Nick :-) I believe at the moment Stomp can only send the same PC message as the preset it is on, but not completely sure about that. I will have to look into it!
In other words, you can do this for the first 30 presets in Helix, since there's 30 banks in the MC6. with PCtx turned on in the Stomp, it'll switch to the corresponding bank for the first 30 presets.
Jason I can’t figure out how to select a specific Preset via MC8 I’ve figured out how to scroll presets set snapshots but can’t select specific preset 43A for example CC 70 doesn’t work like I thought it would as it just bypasses? I don’t see anything in the MIDI Dictionary for specific presets
Can you change the functions of the switches if you switch modes?
Will this pedal control snapshots on my Helix Floor as well?
Hi Jason thanks for your clear guide .Do u have a video where u explain how to control HX Stomp tap tempo from MC6 ? If not how can i do it ? I have tried but i din't find the solution yet :)
My pleasure :-) If you check the manual it will you the proper settings for Tap Tempo as I think is actually shown on screen in my video.
How do you cycle thru Snap midi screen, reverb on/off, delay on/off midi screen and looper midi screens?
Yes I should mentioned that. You press A/B or B/C foot switches at the same time to bank up or down.
Can i program the mc6 to do more than one function at a time? For example using switch A to toggle the reverb AND delay on and off.
Yes I believe so Jayden!
Can you switch modes via midi?
Great video!
Is it possible to use this with the stomp and having two switches dedicated to switch up and down (one switch to bank up and another to bank down) some of them to controll (on/off) an effect, AND some to switch between different patches on one bank? What I’m asking is basically mixing the possibilities you’re showing here in this video :-)
Thank you :-) And it sure is possible to do many of the things you are asking. Although, I am not sure if you can bank up and down through the presets. But you can do that on the Stomp footswitches and do everything else on the MC6!
@@JasonSadites In the HX Stomp, you can assign FS4 & FS5 to be bank or preset up/down. Then you just send the midi cc's for FS4 & 5.
To scroll presets, as opposed to banks, do this:
For preset scroll up:
Msg 1 Press CC71:1 (Set Stomp button mode to "Scroll Presets")
Msg 2 Press CC50:127 (Press FS2)
Msg 3 Press CC71:0 (Set Stomp button mode to "Stomp")
For preset scroll Down:
Msg 1 Press CC71:1
Msg 2 Press CC49:127 (Press FS1)
Msg 3 Press CC71:0
Can I set a button on the mc6 mkii to select a preset on my hx stomp while also switching the bank on the mc6 mkii?
Yep
The only missing piece is having the HXS tell the MC6 which blocks are on and off already when you switch to a preset, so you can show the correct ON/OFF label on the MC6 for each block.
Hmmm this seems like a big problem. I just ordered the Morningstar, hopefully there's a good way to navigate this issue
@@free4368 Did you figure it out? I think you just have the switched assigned when the reverb or delay is off on the stomp, so when you press the learn button it lines up the label correctly
How to know if cc is available?
Came here to see the video, saw the shirt... RIP Neil Peart
Jason, great job man. I need to scroll up n down , max 8 banks and max 3-4 snapshots per. Can I do this with this set up? Or do I also need the TT-2 mission pedal? I also have the Mission expression pedal. Can I use that also? Thanks
The EP1-L6
Yes the TT-2 would work for banking up and down, but then you will not be able to use the expression pedal inputs at the same time. I am using a Mission Expression the non-Line 6 version and using it with the MC6 for all my expression pedal needs. Hope that helps!
So, TT-2, can’t use expression pedal. That’s a shame. But with midi, yes? Man, just wanted to save space and money. By seeking this up, on a pedal board, might as well bring the floor Helix, and be done with it. You see what I mean? Thanks for your help.
But at this point is not worth it to add 100€ and go for the Helix LT?
What power supply are you using? I have seen so many options, not sure which one will be the right one
At the moment, I was just powering from the computer. I am waiting for the new Mission Engineering USB-C power supply which will be out soon. It will power my whole board...
@@JasonSadites Hi Jason. Great review. Around 12 minutes into the video, it looks as though you are using the USB phantom power from the HX Stomp. Is that correct? The stomp only has a 5-pin mid cable, but the MC6 has 9-pin midi and takes its power from pin 7. Did you get phantom power working and if you did, what cable did you use?
Great video, but why use it to turn reverb and delay on/off, when you could just do it in stomp box mode on the actual HX Stomp?
Darren, am just demoing different possibilities. You may have the Stomp buttons set for something else.
Everybody will obviously find their own setup that works with their workflow...
Sold out :(
Oh sorry to hear that! Hopefully they will have more very soon!
