really loved these movies for the fact Watson was actually useful and able to think for himself instead of just gawking at holmes like in Sherlock.
Yeah it’s an easy trap to fall into writing Sherlock stories since he was literally invented just to be the first-person viewpoint (which you don’t need in a movie) and to be the average Joe by comparison.
Thats why I liked Elementary over Sherlock back then. I found it really cool that Watson started training to be a detective in her own right, not just tagging along with Sherlock.
But they are both rather mediocre. Elementary is the superior option.
If you like that, you should check out The Seven Percent Solution from 1976. Robert Duvall’s Dr. Watson is nothing to F with
@@expendableindigo9639 you clearly never read the hounds of baskerville, the best holmes book, and it's from watson's perspective
The chemistry between Robert and Jude law was incredible
Yeah, they really captured the original Sherlock and Watson on their interactions. Specially on the deduction scenes.
These movies taught an entire generation what "discombobulate" means, and that is not a joke.
It literally didn't. We were taught that word exists. Most people still don't know what it means.
very true
Avatar did. Sokka did.
an entire generation? Yeah umm noo. If you look at the entire population you realise that very few people watch movies. Extremely few watched this one.
@@visions_of_noah Exactly this! Most youngsters are watching TikTok in between school, parties and p**n.
This is a duo of movies that really needs a third installment to complete and conclude a fantastic Sherlock Holmes trilogy.
For obvious reasons, it's been put back, but it is coming, so I'm led to believe.
God I hope so. It's criminal that there's yet to be a 3rd film. @@scsutton1
well guess what!
I was jumping with Joy back in 2019 when dex fletcher joined and announced it'll get release in 2021, Then in pandemic, they said 2023, So now I'm totally lost on hope
@@scsutton1 I might've missed something, what obvious reasons? 🤣
That "Relax, Im a doctor" while suffocating a man was stone cold and very cool.
In terms of book accuracy, Downey's scruffy, drug-loving, severely OCD-minded Sherlock Holmes is closer to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's version than most film incarnations of Holmes. Which says a lot about how 19th century heroes were written back then.
Oh that's cool to hear! I'd love to see a video breakdown of the most "lore accurate" Sherlock Holmes potrayal on TV and Film over the years--ranked from worst to best
And would've been even better if Guy Ritchie wasn't americanized for these movies. All his substance was replaced with flashy shallowness.
@@510tuber The american flashiness was super fun! And it's a style that has made these two movies super unique and memorable even decades later
Although now that you mention it, it would be fun to see a more British version of this RDJ Sherlock Holmes with more seriousness and with fighting that's still brutal and pragmatic
Holmes was also a master of a form of martial arts so obscure and secretive that Conan Doyle had to make it up himself.
The same can be said of Daniel Craig's Bond films. That brute instrument with only a thin veneer of class is exactly how Bond is written in the books. The movie Bond everyone is used to is typically how the Bond VILLAINS were always written in the books. Bond was not suave and sophisticated, he was a blunt instrument you sent in to get the job done at any cost.
These movies are incredible, it's a shame we never got a full trilogy. The best part is, Holmes being an action movie hero kind of tracks. His skills in mixed martial arts is actually canon to the original novels, with his style being a combination of boxing, jujitsu, cane fighting and French kickboxing. Same with his drug use.
I also loved that about the movies.
I'll always love the "discombobulate" scene.
Apparently they're still working on the third
Bartitsu
@@jonathanw1019 Conan Doyle intentionally called that "baritsu", so shut it.
Game of Shadows is also part of the "Moriarty tries to star WW1 so he can sell steampunk weapons to both sides" duology along with League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.
... I feel like an idiot for not spotting that.
The MTTSWSHCSSWTBS Cinematic Universe is my favorite one, glad to see it get some recognition
The Sherlock movies have the vibe that League should of had, IMO.
0:52 "who uses his mind yo calculate exactly how you're about to catch THESE hands" 😂😭👏
"Discombobulate."
I mean...he aint wrong
Had me rolling with that one.
Fun fact SH never wore that hat all the time, he only wore it once. And SH is a good fighter in the book, with exceptional strength.
"SH never wore that hat, he only wore it once."
Well? Make up your mind.
@@r0bw00d never wore that hat all the time* my mistake
@@r0bw00d English is not my first language, it's not even my second.. so very sorry..
@@jonathanrynjah It's easily fix with just a simple sentence; Sherlock only wore his iconic hat once.
We English only ever wear that style of hat when visiting rural areas.
James Moriarty: "I am the inevitable!"
Sherlock Holmes: "And I am Iron Man!"
“Inevitable? Bish, I’m Tony Stank”
Yes.
And "I Am Groot!"
John Watson: I’m a doctor!
Holmes & Watson their relationship in these movies were the best.
Probably not a popular opinion, but these films are my favourite part of Guy Richie's filmography (especially the first one). And such a great casting, too.
Game of Shadows is a frequent rewatch for me.
I prefer the second one but they’re both awesome
Not at all I love most of Richie’s films including these ones!
These and The Man From UNCLE
Like what you like, and I greatly enjoy these films.
"Would you like a Fry with that?" Easily the biggest laugh from an Honest Trailer yet. Bravo!
Where are you GOING Stanley?!
So simple, yet so beautiful
This is made even better that Stephen Fry is the voice for the Sherlock Holmes audiobook
“ I thought we agreed it is too small for you “ is CRAZY out of context 😂
I say this to women all the time
Can't forget how great the soundtracks were for those films.
The movie that answers the question, "How does a drugged-out genius with detailed anatomical knowledge fight?"
Man, the release schedule of movies now is so insane that it takes forever to get “older” films up! Appreciate you guys not letting things go!!!
'and of course extremely large, menacing British dudes'. If memory serves, the character shown in this reference is actually French.
Was looking for this comment. The character is French, and the actor is actually French Canadian (from New-Brunswick)
Oui.
6:24 "And of course extremely large menacing *FRENCH* dudes." (Edit: French-Canadian, thanks people. But definitely not English!)
Canadian, actually
@@XxEvilTiggerxX French-Canadian, specifically
@@RockPaperBear And Acadian! Robert Maillet visited my Acadian high school in 2012 just after he finished filming his role in Pacific Rim to talk about his dual career. Very cool dude.
Came here to say this.
Yea I was like “ain’t that guy French(-Canadian)?”.
It’s really been 15 years since Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes came out, hasn’t it??😳😳😳👀👀
Nothing hits Sherlock Holmes like being reversed Mean Girls by a bus that suddenly supposedly made a game of coming out of the shadows.
Imagine how much charisma you need to have to make Jude Law a supporting character
Like... Haley Joel Osment?
@@MrJHDK hey, if he can do it to Bruce Willis....
Like... Brie Larson?
@@MwizeraUwizera Which parallel universe do you come from where Bruce Willis is a SUPPORTING actor in a movie with Haley Joel Osment?
@@92brunod he's not technically the lead in Sixth Sense, but many could say Osment carried the movie
Holmes was a highly skilled boxer in the stories. So, the calculations of fighting make sense.
IIRC in the first film, Inspector Lestrade plays along with Holmes with that punch to help him gather more info about the bad guys. People have noted that Lestrade in this film was praised for nothing being able to help Holmes and be more intelligent than what his character is usually depicted in media.
Not only does Lestrade play along with Holmes, he's the one who gives him the key to escape the handcuffs later in Coward's office.
Neither Lestrade nor that one mustachioed officer are actually corrupt in the movies. The latter tells Sherlock that his arrest has been ordered and then proceeds to help him escape capture. They're forced to arrest Holmes because Coward is a government official, but clearly are trying to undermine him in the process.
@@iout Yeah, I like how these films make Lestrade more competent and helpful to Holmes.
@@josephcalamia5586 In the books he's supposed to be kind of competent (but still overshadowed by Holmes, in fact the point is that "he's a good inspector but still has to go to Holmes in high-profile cases which cannot be solved").
Unpopular opinion - i loved this more than the BBC Sherlock. Despite the over emphasis on action, they were much closer to the novels
Took you guys long enough.
You spelled - thank you for posting this - wrong. You jerk.
Elementary my dear varun
Kept us waiting ha
Netflix Daredevil guy: "First time?"
I mean they were busy doing hundreds of other movies but whatever 😒😒😒
Bravo on the ending name (Lock, Doc.. etc). Just beautiful *chef's kiss*
Its perfect.
Say “you are the weakest link, goodbye”😂
really hope a 3rd film gets made
It’s been 84 years ….
My wife and I went on our first date to see the second movie and it’s JUST NOW GETTING AN HONEST TRAILER ???
And how is there still no 3rd film!?
@@manuelalbertoromero9528
I believe it was a scheduling issue at the time with both being such popular actors. I remember them both saying that they would’ve happily done a third one.
And then they apparently made another attempt right before Covid hit so it got cancelled again. RDJ still talks about how he‘d really love to make it though. Guess we gotta keep hoping 🫠
@@manuelalbertoromero9528
I believe it was scheduling issues at the time with Jude and RDJ both being such successful actors. I remember them both saying they would’ve liked to make a third one.
Then they apparently made another attempt shortly before the pandemic which got cancelled. But RDJ still talks about how he’d love to make a third one from time to time so there’s hope!
The MCU missed an opportunity to make a Sherlock reference to both Robert Downey Jr. and Benedict Cumberbatch. 😂
It was low hanging fruit even by MCU standards.
Think the Russo’s wanted it but cumberbatch hated the idea
Given that both Sherlocks AND both Watsons were in the MCU... and there was a character mentally trapped in the 80s when "No sh*t Sherlock" "Keep digging Watson" was at it's peak....
There's a brief reference in Thor 3.
They did, it was just unbelievably subtle, most people missed it. It's when Tony says he wants to take the fight to Thanos rather than return the ship to Earth, when he lays out what he wants to do, he says "Do you concur, Doctor?" While he is talking to Doctor Strange, this is a very common Sherlock line to Dr. Watson, and RDJ saying it to Cumberbatch doesn't feel like an accident
"Ehhh, Wats On, Doc?" Freakin' brilliant.
Need to find Sherlock holmes to figure out why you don’t do a District 9 trailer
DO GODZILA MINUS ONE!
GODZILA MINUS ONE!

I never ever ever get tired of watching these two movies. We need a third one badly.
Finally, this feels like a long time coming. Thanks for making this
Missed an opportunity to add a clip from House MD in the intro. House (Holmes) , Wilson (Watson) solves medical mysteries and is addicted to painkillers. The creators said it’s a direct homage to Sherlock Holmes and other than BBC Sherlock one of the most successful.
My favorite version of Sherlock Holmes.
Wow. Talk about a Throwback Tuesday.
Yay! A great treat for me this Tuesday, getting to see an Honest trailer about one of my favorite sets of movies! Still wishing for a third installment...
Both movies were perfect.
Who else wants a 3rd film in this series?
They are making one or at least in the process of making one.
@@FreedomCinema88sauce?
To be honest, I'd only want a third one if he went up against Arsène Lupin. Even though the Doyle estate never approved of the crossover, I feel like only Lupin could get the better of Holmes.

These two movies made the latter years of my childhood! I rewatched the movies, listened to both soundtracks several times (thank you for your incredible work, Hans), and frequently checked for news on when the next film would come out.
Watching this gave me a huge wave of nostalgia, but also reawakened my hopes for a 3rd movie that will most likely never happen...

aight that was funny with the transition explaining with a snobby & shy voice xD. That's not to say the rest wasn't, but that broke my poker face (often laugh in my mind or just smile, but that one cracked it open). Thanks for the video!

I never expected you to do this Honest Trailer and I am SO glad you did.

"Cobblestone"
Well earned golf clap 😂😂😂
Should have said something about how Moriarty was also Valery Lagasov in Chernobyl. It would have been a great tie in for the character!
Please say “life before death, strength before weakness, journey before destination”
Brandon Sanderson
i will protect those who cannot protect themselves
You know you need to say "discombobulate" now in your epic voice
There's a real life Dr. Moriarty at the University of Nottingham. He's a professor of theoretical physics and a lover of heavy metal.
More Guy Ritchie films PLEASE
Those movies were so good. There should have been a third one!
Yay, I was hoping you guys would do this one!
Enjoyed these so much - Please do a 3rd installment!
I've seen both of these multiple times, so why are so many of these clips not in my memory banks? Strange! Good HT!!!
Clearly a sign to rewatch both sooner than later. I similarly felt surprised to remember Noomi Rapace was in _A Game of Shadows_ but that's more retroactive recognition.

So do I
Who does not ?

I love these movies, especially Game of Shadows. I really wish they went for a third.
Ghostbuster Frozen Empire honest trailer !!
Will Ferrell aside, there's never been a bad Sherlock Holmes. Robert Downey Jr, Benedict Cumberbatch, Jeremy Brett, and so on... They're all valid and acceptable interpretations.
Robert's tops in my opinion.
Jeremy Brett is the Platinum Standard Holmes. Pure perfection.
Does Brent Spiner playing Data playing Sherlock Holmes also count?
The imposing giant was actually speaking French, not English. Thus: not a British person. Elementary, my dear Epic Voice Guy.
