I’ll never forget this scene. To me, it’s more powerful and emotionally wrenching than all the aerial dogfights. Tears at the heart.
It’s the best scene…. Especially knowing what Val has really gone through and somehow he’s still powerful in this
They were rivals who became very deep friends. Combat does that to people.
lol. Gay
@@Maximus25N, I feel very sorry for you.
@@JWBabaYaga don’t feel sorry for me Baba yaga booby yoga ! I just feel sorry that Maverick didn’t stick his tongue in Iceman’s mouth
I’m actually very glad that Tom Cruise fought really hard to bring back Val Kilmer for Top Gun: Maverick since he wouldn’t do another movie ever since he wanted to bring his best friend back for the sequel. Thank you, Tom and Val for bringing on a great performance in the sequel. 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
No shit, I didn't know that.
What a great scene between 2 supremely talented actors. So glad they filmed this, it hit all the right notes and really set the movie up.
Indeed it is
val kilmer such a fighter of pure oldskool@@RizkymArifin
both hollywood best of the best@@RizkymArifin
Set the movie up? It was like halfway through the film. (But yes, it was a fantastic touch, nonetheless.)
Val kilmer is wayyy more talented and diverse. Very underrated
I love Ice's "I'm not asking." text. He first tried to get Mav to come as a friend then he's like "Alright fine, time to put my admiral's cap on" and made it an "order"
Yes...ice is on top of chain of command so maverick have to obey the order
No, he was dying
@@eq1373 he was still an Admiral.
The wingman wanted his wingman to report to the admiral such a great scene
No matter how many times I watch this scene, TC's "This is a nice moment let's not ruin it." response always makes me smile.
That’s the best thing close friends can do in moments like the this
Lots of laughter in the theater when that line was said.
... After crying!.. Watching this on the cinema 😮😮! I get all you could hear wear people crying❤
Icemans hair is ON POINT
thats right...always has been
In the real world, that hair would have broken several military rules.
@@g0nt411 you can get a lot of exemptions if you are a top admiral
@@utkarsharyan I checked it out. Higher officers have more freedom with their hair, but Iceman certainly abused his position.
If you pay attention... right after the hug, when Tom Cruise says "Thank you Ice ... for everything," you can see Val Kilmer getting very emotional, almost as if he didn't expect to hear that "everything" from Tom. Best scene of the film.
No you can't. 😂
@@staticfrequency2250 Exactly. People are, so weird and get more emotionally invested in things that don't exist and fiction than they do in the important things in their lives
I just love how they went from rivals to close friends who have huge respect for eachother.
Same 👍💯
"You Can Be my wingman Anytime." - Iceman, 1986
“Bullshit, you can be mine.” -Maverick 1986
*hugs*
Iceman never gave up on his wing man, because his wing man never gave up on him.
"One last thing".........a true moment between brothers. Not only as their characters played in this film but as professionals in their craft who clearly have a mutual bond and respect many would fail to comprehend.
Iceman in 1986: "Maverick, it's not your flying, its your attitude, the enemy's dangerous, but right now you're worse than the enemy, you're dangerous and foolish, you may not like the guys flying with you and they may not like you, but whose side are you on?"
.
Iceman in 2022: "The navy needs Maverick, The kid needs Maverick, That's why I fought for you, and that's why you're still here".
It reminds me of the old tennis rivalry - Jimmy Conners vs, John McEnroe. Jimmy Conners/Iceman - did not have the same natural instincts as McEnroe/Maverick, but could just wear you down into making mistakes and then go in for the kill. McEnroe/Maverick had more god given talent but always pushed the rules. Both were incredibly successful doing it their way.
@@aeromedical6776great example. Also General Omar vs Patton during the ww2. One remarkably calculated, while another brilliant and instinctive. This reflected on their approach to winning battles.
If that’s not character growth, I don’t know what is.
@@aeromedical6776 Very clever example!
@@aeromedical6776 god, I just made the same analogy
Speaking with Kazansky's wife and understanding the gravity of the situation, Maverick manages to maintain his composure and walks into the study, firmly addressing his old friend and superior officer: "Admiral..."
It's a nice moment; let's not ruin it.
Too true. And when Mav says "Admiral", Iceman is like " Sh!t, my wingman is here!, Quick pull yourself together old man so he doesn't see you suffering like this"!
True military bearing! I don't care if you are best friends, family members, whatever when you walk in to a superior's office you call them sir, or if their an Admiral or General you say their rank. Glad they got it right in the movie.
@@shawnchief28 flag officers of any branch of the Armed Forces command the greatest respect.
Interestingly its not the first time Val Kilmer has played a scene with this dynamic. At the end of Tombstone he was in a sanitorium, dying of TB and his old friend Wyatt Earp (Kurt Russell) comes to see him. Earp, for the sake of his friend, ignored his terrible condition and tried to lend him all the dignity he could by treating him normally.
@@shawnchief28Explain fully…
It definetly wouldn't have been the same movie WITHOUT VAL KILMER.
This a nice moment, let's not ruin it...
Ice and Maverick, still at each other...
Many years for this sequel to happen and how this plays out is magical. The wingman says 18 words. Priceless. One reason I joined the Navy was Top Gun. No one can forget that opening music and the flight deck scene. When you see it on screen then within three years later your watching it for real on the crows nest and feeling the power of a F-14 Tomcat screaming at full after burner in the ocean at night on a crisp night on your first ship, you cannot ever, ever forget it. This movie did it justice. Bravo men and woman, Bravo.
This scene alone was worth the price of admission.
Ice pulled rank to get Mav to see him
He knew he was dying. And both had some responsibility for Gooses death. " Time to let go" was not just for Maverick.
even after 32 years, Ice kept asking : "who is the better pilot??" 😇😇
36*
This is a good moment. Let’s not ruin it.
Not overly reading into it but I wonder if that was an actually scripted moment mainly from how Tom reacted to it before his line. He looked thrown. If it was scripted that was awesome but if it was Val going off script than Tom handled it in epic fashion.
This scene right here was a BIG reason why I wanted to see this movie. Val looks so good and I was pleased to see him ❤
Same here 🫡
Should have won Oscar instead of that insane movie
Although to be fair, Everything Everywhere All at Once wasn’t too shabby either.
If you don't get torn up emotionally by this scene then you're not human! To see the man that is the very reason Maverick still has a career in such obvious agony is tough, but even though Ice knows he's dying he's still a wingman to Maverick right up to the end!
I never ever cry at movies, seriously. Maybe once or twice in my 43 years, but this scene, man...wow...before I knew, tears were rolling down and I wiped them away. It didn't help that the theater was hardly populated, so the loneliness didn't help.
Never alone brother
I cried on the 2nd,3rd and 4th times watching knowing Ice would die soon after. And for the Tomcat scene, I cried every time
At least you didn't cry at wrath of Khan like I did.. when they shot Spock out of the spaceship... And I heard amazing Grace with the bagpipes for the first time..
LET IT RAIN
Such a well-acted emotional scene. Although he's only in 1 scene, Val Kilmer should have got an Oscar nomination for this scene alone. So did Tom Cruise.
Like one of them modern-day liberal "participation trophies?" 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
No. Definitely not!
@@carlosreyes1278 The late William Hurt actually won an Oscar for the movie A History of Violence despite the fact he was only in 1 scene.
@@danielwilliamson6180 Hurt was nominated for that but didn't win, sadly.
But I agree Val was Oscar-worthy.
from "Bullshit! You can be mine." to "It's a nice moment. Let's not ruin it."
There wasn’t a dry eye in the theater when I went to see this
This reminds me of me and my grandfather saying our last conversation together and saying thank you ❤
ill never forget this scene, mavs best friend and wingman giving advice. thats what alot of people need
When they hugged, I felt that. 😢
You know Val is a great actor when he delivers such an emotional performance which nothing but body language. I'm happy he hasn't stopped giving a hundred percent even with his heath issues your a trooper Val😊
What a film !! A film that can make a grown man laugh then cry then get goosebumps all in one is a film !!!! That’s what it certainly was for me , I hope it has inspired many young men and women to join the Riyal Navy and young American men and women to join the US Navy or the US Marines to fly 😀
Best scene in a a film in a very long time,!! Brought me too tears!!
Ice is the only original TG character (other than Mav) to make an appearance in this film.
Mark my words, years from now, this movie will be remembered as a masterpiece, and a “classic”. It already is, one of the greatest movies of the 21st century tbh
For sure!!
I can't lie, I cried!
😥😢😭
I'm NOT crying. Your crying!
The one scene to watch this movie for. Was nice to see Val Kilmer again
When ice goes who’s the better pilot you or me and mav goes this is a nice moment let’s not ruin it. I think it’s iconic ❤❤
Truly a great moment for Val, they honored his character beautifully. In the first movie there were times when whatever Iceman said to Maverick, there was a sense of wisdom in his words.
Even though he doesn’t speak until the end, you get the sense that over the years that wisdom grew and he became a very wise man and be able to help Maverick see the bigger picture and understand he can’t hold onto Rooster forever.
I was 20 years old when the first Top Gun movie came out in 1986 and I just joined the ARMY, ))) I even thought of changing branches after watching it. And I waited 35 years for a sequel and the wait was worth it! This scene was necessary a very important scene because it gave us closure about two competitors who met as rivals and became great friends. This scene made me cry because it makes your think about your own life and that those decisions we take as young people will have great repercussions later in life!!!
Hugs from afar!!
Talk about genius. Tom Cruise simply and utterly knows what a perfect sequels needs.
This is one of the ingredients - Ice and Mav in a scene together after all these years. Magic.
The pain Val Kilmer must have felt to speak in this scene must have hurt a lot...but I'm happy to hear him speak despite the pain, made the scene more emotional. Best scene in the whole for me, is this one
I believe they used AI to simulate the voice since irl he can't actually speak anymore
Val's son recorded the lines
A lot of other sources have said as such, but the director Kosinski said it was his actual voice but they did a lot or sound mixing and editing to use it.
They are so authentic that they don't seem to be acting... their emotion is real
6:11 the photo really captures the bond between them.
This movie caught me off guard in so many ways. Such a compelling story while addressing the issue of aging - I enjoyed it so very much
absolutely great scene played with utmost respect for one another. one of the best in movie history.
I have basically been a Val Kilmer fan my whole life, I grew up on his movies. This scene tugged at my heart strings in a way no legacy sequel to an 80s action flick, had any right to do. Val still can do a powerful scene, even when he can barely speak, the man is amazing.
Cruise refused to do this movie without Val Kilmer. I’m glad they brought him back for the sequel.
Also Val has throat cancer in real life. It’s nice they worked it into his character and not in a demeaning way.
I thought val got rid of the cancer long time ago and they gave him a voicebox to use
@ahmandg.9659 He did have cancer and most recently it's stated he's cancer free but lost his voice. Depending on the source, that was Val's actual voice digitally enhanced or it was his son's modified to sound more like dad.
Would've been cool if they made this film while Val still had speech. He probably would've had a big part!
There couldn't be a better scene in the movie.
Teaches us a Great Lesson.
We all probably become wiser with age and Rivalry turns into Respect.........
EVERYBODY LOVES ICE MAN
Damn Right!!
I’m glad his stayed strong and is still here here but to see him in heat then seeing him like this is sad asf to me it shows that life takes unexpected turns for the worse or better I’m just thankful we still get to see him on the big screen
Iceman's wife in this clip is actress Jean Louisa Kelly who was also in the great Uncle Buck movie with John Candy. She played the at first bratty Tia Russell, the niece in the Uncle Buck movie from 1989.
Yes and she was also in “Mr. Holland’s Opus”
@@KevinGonzalez-vz7rz and in Yes Dear she played Kim
I was crying so much when I saw this scene in the theatre. It was so emotional to see Val Kilmer return as Iceman, who, unlike Val himself, managed to beat his throat cancer, albeit with a high price, it's only fitting that he portray Ice, who is dying of it, but not before he gives Maverick some good advice. You could really feel the pain in Maverick's voice when he presented the the two outcomes: either send Rooster on the mission and risk him being killed, upon which Maverick would never forgive himself. But if Rooster was refused the mission, he would never forgive Maverick. What Ice said vocally was also painful, but such a tearjerker. "The Navy needs Maverick. The kid needs Maverick. That's why I fought for you. That's why you're still here."
He didn't do all that just for his former rival but still good friend, he did it for Rooster, and for the memory of his dad Goose. And I can tell that embrace they shared together wasn't just acting, it was real between Tom and Val together. And amidst the tears, there was that uplifting laugh when Maverick responded to Ice's question at the end. It really made the scene close out with a very heartwarming feeling.
I think that by being supportive of Maverick, Iceman also took on the role of Viper in this movie.
There are shades of Viper and Goose, in almost equal measure.
@BlotRorschach ice pain in the eyes he was old school bro with respect after mav saved his bacon on the enterprise.
Yeah I think as Iceman moved up the ranks quicker than Mav, he took on the role of protector for a supremely talented pilot and loyal officer.
You can hear it in the score, too -- at 5:39, you can hear similar chords to that of Mav and Viper's conversation at the house (where Viper revealed the circumstances of his father's death) from the original film.
@crazyrabbits yep. It was a perfect omage. Even the wife opens the door, same as the original.
Nothing's better than an advice from good old friend, mav and ice are just perfect example of great and mutual friendship along the years, love those character
Time to let go.... was insanely powerful. When Mav says dont send someone else to die...he is referencing Goose without directly saying it, but Iceman knows what the issue is and the only way Mav and Rooster are going to both let go of the past is to fly this mission together. Awesome writing here, kudos
Tom said he would never consider doing a Top Gun sequel if Val Kilmer aint gonna be in it
So powerful. I cry 😭 every time. This is the best scene in the movie
As a child of the 80's......I have only this to say............I approve. Nothing more nothing less. Thank you all
“I don’t know how…”
Damn. That line was delivered with perfection.
Val Kilmer is such a great actor I'm gonna miss him in the movies
This is a powerful scene for sure
Thanks Val. Thanks for doing your best, always.
True brotherly love … great scene … the last question … hard to answer … both flew by a different set of rules … they were the best
Everything I see this scene it gets to me. Because you actually feel it in you. Well maybe some of you do. As a former Navy Enlisted I get it and I cherish the time I had in the Navy and 14 yrs in the Army National Guard. There is a sense of brotherhood that lasts even when your out. In my opinion your Never really out...
Thank you for your service!
Your most welcome...
Thank you for your service 😊
We maybe out, but you never lose the attitude. I had the same conversations with some of my buddies and some became mustangs and I was in J.A.G. Before that I did route clearance and was airborne infantry. I always addressed them as sir. However, in their office it was are names when we were in Afghanistan.
Small detail at 1:45. What is the small blue flag flying below the American flag outside the window?
This scene will always get me 😭 Such a touching and emotional moment ❤ This will always be one of my favorite Tom Cruise movies. Amazing actors and movie! 🙌🏻 Tom Cruise is one of my favorite actors, always has been, always will be! 👏🏻🥰❤
The music and the lines between 2 good friends are touch and move.
I don't care much for Cruise personally but he is one hell of an actor. And Val Kilmer is over the top.
Val kilmer is his own level of actor
The whole movie was worth it Iceman’s words ❤
This scene was sad, poignant, and so sweet, all at the same time.
This was such a superb scene. Fun Fact: Jean Louisa Kelly plays Iceman's wife who also played Tia in Uncle Buck. Nice little subtle nod to Uncle Buck and John Hughes.
The last question when ice asked maverick who's the better pilot, maverick should have answered. I'm your huckleberry.
Im not asking...Basically ordered to show up cold as ICE this was the best scene in the film showing a dying breed of 80s action heros who are real life friends. Its sad seeing Val like this and it shows no matter what we are vulnerable to life's unexpected consquences.
Not sure if it’s just me but this scene really made me emotional, knowing that this was Pete’s last time seeing Ice before he’d pass. Not to mention was in a difficult situation already when it came to working with Goose’s son.
2024 still watching it best movie ever in my book
So powerful esp when you know Val was 50% not acting . He was actually suffering
Just as Dwayne Johnson fought so hard to bring Henry Cahill back to the DC screens, Tom Cruise fought so hard to bring Val Kilmer back to the screens just for a few minutes of the scene. And this scene was epic and memorable.
This was a very best moment of a long best friends meet together that it will cherish forever ❤❤❤
This was so powerful to me as an older man now since the beginning of being a teen loving top gun.. I like many others in the theatre was bawling like a baby and we all looked at each other and it all hit the same.. I didn’t feel bad at all.. I let out a lot that night.
Even with all of the amazing combat and training scenes, this to me is still the best scene in the entire movie. It makes my heart smile every single time.
See the cursor blinking at the final character of the “It´s time to let go” line?
Even that subtle detail adds up to the grandeur of this iconic scene
Damn these tears
You Can Be My Wingman Anytime.
Top Gun: Iceman. A spin off I'd like to see.
God bless Tom & Val for rising to this wholesome moment.
I love both you great guys.
I can't believe they had to fight to bring back Val kilmer to Top Gun. He was so hugh in the first one. A top notch great actor. TV
This “sequel” was better, by far, than the original.
Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer are truly two of the best actors of our generation.
This movie was hands down worth the 30 year wait brilliance and simultaneously heart wrenching and heart warming
God bless you Val Kilmer, you absolute legend.
This scene was absolutely beautiful and bottom line, perfect. You can see that Maverick is still living with the guilt of Goose's death. Ice knew this from the start... he always told him, just like Viper did, "you gotta let him go... "
Moments are forever.
best scene, undisputed
I've watched 100s of films in my life and very rarely cry-but..... 😢. If you haven't seen the 1st one this won't hit as hard. ♥️♥️👌
God, I love these guys SO much.
"I'm not a teacher Ice. I'm a fighter pilot. Naval aviator. It's not what I am. It's who I am. How do I teach that? Even if I could teach it it's not what Rooster wants. It's not what the Navy wants. That's why they canned me the last time. The only reason I'm here now is you."
“If I send him on this mission, he might never come home. And if I don’t send him, he’ll *NEVER* forgive me. Either way, I can lose him forever.”
**stands up and clears the throat**
"The navy, needs Maverick."
"The kid, needs Maverick."
"That’s why I fought for you. That’s why you’re still here."
And thus does Peter Mitchell become the Goku to Tom Kazansky's Vegeta.
I love this scene.....wow.
Saw this movie for the first time yesterday. This scene....especially seeing Ice struggle to speak every word.....just tore my heart out.
Wonderful. At first, they were rivals, couldn't stand each other, and then, they were friends,Ice took Mav under his protection. Ice always followed the rules,Mav broke every single one of them.Even through, Ice respected Mav,admired him.
Im the biggest critic of scifi religion Tommy Cruise BUT he did save Hollywood last year . I think he should be shown more respect and be given an equal amount of IMAX theaters along with the Oppenheimer movie .
