@@lentilsoupeater It is all over the news feeds and EV channels. This was bound to happen. This product is not needed and was just a money grab. Just get a concealed carry permit and protect yourself.
I don’t understand the comments that say there is no use case for this. Clearly the possibility for ambush exists with EVs, irrespective of gender or neighborhood, due to the tethered nature of fast chargers. It isn’t arguable.
The charging infrastructure needs to adopt the well-lit spaces of gas stations, and even then this device may still be necessary depending on location and risk tolerance.
Obstinate refusal to acknowledge and address potential problems with EV technology actually hinders its adoption. This product is an interesting countermeasure, nice work to those who devised it.
I agree. And I don't understand why people who don't want one are so hostile to the idea, instead of just saying "not for me" and moving on. It's true that crime isn't as bad as some news sources and politicians might like you to believe. But it's also true that criminals don't stick strictly to low-income neighborhoods.
Why are charging stations not "stations" like gas stations? A well-lit and monitored area with a convenience store and restrooms would be awesome! 20-30 minutes is plenty of time to visit the restroom and convenience store. Seems like a match made in heaven to me.
Shell and BP already have the infrastructure for this.
The thru rate of ICE vehicles at gas stations dwarf DCFC stations if both were processing as fast as possible. Those customers missing from DCFC thru put equal less buyers in the store. The model appears at first blush to be logical but DCFC has always been a real-estate investment given the dwell time of each vehicle. A DCFC feeding the same number of patrons in the store each hour at scale would be like a Walmart parking lot with every parking place a charge stall to equal the thru and dwell rates of ICE vehicles to keep the store customer visits equal. Problem is the cost of real estate ruins the profitability equation. There is a model that works well but a quick in out setup is not that by a long shot. Glad their dabbling in it but Flying J rates should be an indicator or their calculations. The real solution is obvious.
Every Wawa and Cumberland farms should be required by federal law to have at least 6 or more 350KW charging stations at every location. The parking lots are huge in Florida and have plenty of wasted space. This would solve so many issues with range anxiety and put so much added coin in their pockets with purchases of their overpriced goods at each location.

This may not be for every EV owner, but I think its a good idea for those that charge at charging stations in bad areas, I'm thinking women that charge at sketchy chargers at night, etc. It's an insurance policy
We agree! The whole concept came from an online forum. A young woman, who drives an EV, felt insecure while charging late at night on her way home. Our founders and developers felt compelled to provide a solution.
Tom, great show. I'm a huge fan who drives a Mustang Mach-e. I would disagree with you by saying that this device is something that EVERY EV owner should have. In fact, the public charger companies should incorporate the technology. For the same reason you are obligated to purchase a car insurance for WHEN you need need it. This device should be used every time BECAUSE you never know when you need it. It's better to be on and not need it than wished you had it, and it's too late. Yes, I agree that some locations and times are safer than others hut even in those situations evil could be lurking and you might be the one that got away. When I do long distance trips I do it at night and almost every time I'm the only one there.

Fun fact if it fails you get EVjacked 😅😮. My 2012 Mitsubishi i-MiEV allowed you to roll away downhill and rip off the charger but not start. I almost broke the charger once. Another way to do the same thing as this device would be to have it actually eject when you start the car and say push the hazard button.
At $300 even with 25% off, it seems a bit expensive. Maybe for those who may have been in a situation where they feel unsafe, I guess you can't put a price on that. If the company can do a NACS to CCS1 adapter with the EVeject feature built in, then it may be worth it for me instead of using this adapter on top of another adapter. Good idea though.
That's it - I think it's mostly for those that have in the past felt threatened at a charging station, and for those that just always like to be extra cautious.

This thing is worth $100 on a good day. Yeah, they priced it at $300, give you $75 off and you think you just got a good deal. You got something all right and it’s not a good deal. At $300, it’s out of reach for many EV drivers. I would pay $100 for it IF I fast charged even remotely often. But I don’t. And I won’t pay $300. Ridiculous cost.

@@rsewill12 What a silly comment. Folks by guns- legally- for lots of reasons. I'm no gun guy, but I respect that fact that owning one is a 2nd Amendment (the second item our Founders thought of in the Bill of Rights!!) right. One does not have to be paranoid to have a gun for hunting, sport or protection.
I imagine you think the 4th Amendment (protects people from unreasonable searches and seizures by the government) isn't a problem if folks have nothing to hide.

As it becomes public knowledge that this product exists and that people have it, it will make all EV's into a less tempting target. Right now everybody knows we are sitting ducks, but once this product is common knowledge people will realize that any given EV might drive away at any minute
It is so sad the US society seems to be so broken you even have to think about such circumstances. Rich and poor are so far away from each other. That is the problem. Not a fixed charging port while charging.
How tempting of a target are people now? How many *verified* reports of people getting mugged/assaulted while using a public charger? What percent of charging sessions are they? How do the chances stack with being assaulted at a gas station?
I'm not sure EV owners are targets. How many people that don't own EVs even know that the car can't move when charging?
@@roberttylerbennett Ironically, if there are enough stories about this product outside EV-specific media, the awareness of that fact might grow and criminals might start trying it. Probably not very successfully, but the net result could do the other way than @JP-sw5ho hoped.

This was a concern I thought of charging in the back of a retail parking lot at 3 am one day. BTW - a screw was hung up on the Tesla at bottom edge where plastic meets body.
I supercharged for the first time yesterday. I was on a road trip and unfamiliar with the area. It was daytime but the supercharger was in a sketchy area and I was very low on charge. I will admit that I felt vulnerable while charging. I ordered one of these just to give myself options.
Someone is going to be blessed with a screw in their tire 11:30.

They should improve the design so it disengages without damaging. Lower the cost of the product. Improve the functionality such as providing NACS to CCS, etc.
Use metal sleeves with prongs instead of screws to make it reusable.
Tom: So you found 4 of 6 screws. You realize that you left 2 screws that the next users of that charger will back over them as they back in and those screws can puncture their tires?
So actually, I must have left one. You can see @9:40 of the video in slow motion that one of the screws fell onto the chargeport ledge and stayed there. My friend who I borrowed it from called me a few days later to tell me he found a small screw there and to ask what it was from. So evidently I missed one. I don't know how because I did check for a few minutes as I wanted to get everything that broke off to examine it. EVject told me their new version that just came out has a rubber cap that holds the screws in place when it breaks away, so this will no longer happen.

While using the EVject, does the unit get warm, does it maintain full power, are there losses?
What is the resistance of the separable junction? How hot does it get when carrying 500+ amps? Are there any temperature sensors in this unit? You have stressed the importance of such safety features in NACS -> CCS1 adapters. This breakaway device is functionally equivalent to such an adapter. Shouldn’t the same exact concern apply?

I could see this being useful in remote areas where wildlife could make it unsafe to get out of the vehicle. Bears, moose, etc. I get it these are unlikely situations, but they could happen on places like Banff.
A product that preys on people's unfounded fears. How many people have been harmed at EV chargers because they could not drive away? Its great marketing for sure. however, if a bad guy really wants to target a person charging, attack them when they get out to plug in. This product then does nothing. Great video on testing it..

On similar topic, Sawstop table saws have a cartridge which fires, stops the blade and retracts it below the table if the blade contacts skin. Sawstop will replace the cartridge free of charge if activated. I dont think it is out of line for this product to have the same deal
If EvJect will do NACS with a remote, i will buy for sure! La is bruttal. I had a situation where i wanna drive away and would spare an adapter. It was been a shootout near my car charging with me in it. If i can, i would rip this adapter in peases without a hesitation.
What if you stop the charger from the app on CCS. I assume most if not all allow you to stop charge from the app, would that work for EvJect to still allow it to trick the car into thinking it is not plugged in?

I haven't seen an ev charger in a high crime location. I have been driving an ev for 10 yrs.
How about the ones in dark areas, behind buildings? I'm not sure I'd feel safe charging at night in some of the locations that I've seen, especially if I were a woman and less able to defend myself if a confrontation occurred.
One of the superchargers in our town is located next to a Walmart in a neighborhood otherwise full of businesses that are closed at night. There are a lot of sketchy folks who hang out in that Walmart parking lot. These days it doesn't take being in a high crime area to be a victim. Last year a father was killed and his young son badly stabbed in a gas station just on the other side of the freeway overpass by a mentally ill person, a complete stranger to him. Last week there was a shooting at another gbas station about 3 miles away. This is all in a small (20k population) rural town that has the misfortune of being located on the main freeway between Portland, Oregon and Seattle, WA. Homelessness and crime have shot through the roof in the past 5 years.
@@PaulBarwickwhile bad things do happen. Crime went up during pandemic but has dramatically decreased since. Even with the pandemic bump it has been historically low.

There have been several reports of Tesla charging stations being vandalized and charging cables cut off a the charger housing so there are criminal elements out there.
This product came about when a female viewer of the Now You Know channel expressed her concern about not being able to drive away from a Tesla Supercharger during a tense situation that she had experienced while charging her car. Jessie, co-host of Now You Know podcast, put out a challenge to see who could design something that would work that was simple to use and affordable. Wha-la! EVject was born.
Shout out to Jessie and Zac for inspiring the creation of this EV safety product.
The last word on GM being able to supercharge was real soon. Time is up for real soon. I wonder what the issue is in the delay. Maybe a story about this delay.

As a woman with a Model Y who has driven coast to coast alone in a Prius back in 2014, and has refueled in Oakland in the middle of the night. I feel like this device is impractical, there are far cheaper and more effective ways to defend against would be attackers.
I feel like sometimes Men think they know better about how to keep us safe, but most of the time, they don’t. We learn at a young age ways to keep ourselves safe, no woman would put herself in a bad situation if it can be avoided. We tend to be risk adverse and wouldn’t use a Gas Station or EV Charger if it didn’t feel safe.
This device is a solution looking for a problem, it will most likely be bought by men to protect their wives, daughters and girlfriends, whom will probably never use it. Not to mention the potential liability of damaging the Charging Station.
I told a commenter to not comment, since he is not a woman, while saying what he would do as a woman!
Granted that the "unsafe" location is not a regular spot, why not just charge for 5 minutes and leave. That's 20 miles using a 50 kw charger.
Agreed. If people just practiced better situational awareness and, like you said, stay out of high risk situations then this product is not needed. I've charged in some pretty sketchy locations at 2:00 a.m. mostly to do charging tests, and I've never felt unsafe. Although I would preface by saying that I am a man and I was also filming the entire time I was outside of my car.
Mildly impressed no manufacturer builds a breakaway port that supports emergency ejection from within the vehicle.
If you are at a supercharger with your ford or rivian do you use the tesla ejector or the ccs ejector?
That's a good question, I believe you will use the NACS version, but I will do a follow up video next month that addresses that as well as tests the CCS1 version.

If any of you doubt the reality of this and think it is fear mongering, i would recommend searching the name Benny Alcala Jr. Benny was charging his Tesla Model S in the parking lot of a Target store in Bakersfield California. He wound up being shot to death. Different outcome if he could have driven away?? We will never know!
Tom, can you test if the Tesla EVject works with the NACS adapter on your F-150? Press the unlock button on the screen and see if that latch releases like it did on the Tesla. Not asking you to break it, just see if it stops and unlocks.

This device, while neat in concept and engineering, ultimately doesn't solve the problem. Would people who owned this device be guilted into using it *every time* they publicly charged, out of fear for that one highly unlikely chance they'd use its features? That doesn't seem to be practical.
Rather, this technology should be naturally built into the vehicle itself. For example, Wireless Charging naturally addresses this problem as well as many others.
Great idea BUT way too expensive for 1 time use. Appears they give a 1 time replacement with proof of use but I’m torn(😂) on purchasing.
Instead of paying for one of these, I think I will offer a potential attacker $300 to leave me alone. I don't think I have ever tried to pull away while plugged into a DC fast charger but I am pretty absent minded so I could see myself getting distracted and pulling away with it still plugged in and I'd be out $300.

I'll get into that in a new video in about a month, but I believe you would still get the NACS EVject. I'm not sure testing has been done in that circumstance yet, but I will find out.
I would want drive away with my expensive adapter and not leave it at the charger.

1) You had a good point about the danger of trying to guess when you might want to use it. When I got my pew pew carry permit I was taught that you may as well always carry, because often the places we think are safe really aren't. 2) I wonder if they will have one for ccs cars using Tesla nac adapters. and finally 3) If I ever come across someone freaking out about the strange broken piece on the end of the nac nozzle I can swoop in and be the hero that knows what it is, and can remove it.

They could have done a better design by using an electronically controlled ejector. That would have protected the car as well as the charger. And maybe even make it reusable that way.
I think they'll make one that comes apart without breaking it eventually.
$50-100 would be a reasonable price for this product.

If there were certified CCS/NACS adapters selling at $25 to $50, I could see that argument that it should cost in that range. But it needs to do the same thing as they do and more.
It seems to me this device needs to be on the network charger not on the vehicle being charged. The network charger should be responsible for a fail safe disconnect if one drives away . Instead of not allowing the EV to start and move. The charger should stop charging and provide the break away device. Whether it is a mistake or if an intruder is making a move to hurt someone. Let the car go and have the charger stop and breakaway when the EV is engaged to move.
Soon CCS EV’s will be J3400 EV’s with same need of a remote to stop charging. Looks like that should be the method going forward to cover all the bases. 28:58

It's not easy. EVject told me you can run it over with a car and it won't break. I may try that in an upcoming video
@@StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney on the drive home I realized this can be a very dangerous thing to test. Breaking to off, under load, may case large and dangerous arcs as the disconnect happens.

What could save people a lot of money is instead of buying this, car companies should be pressured to offer an emergency release option on your car. It could include a warning so people know a) this is for emergency only, b) the vehicle’s security/dashcams will automatically activate, with doors automatically locked and c) damages caused to the charging station will be charged to the driver “if” the emergency feature was used in non-emergency situation (hence why the dashcam is automatically activated).
That would be great - but it would likely damage the charger's connector (the EVject protects it) and I do not believe OEMs are even considering this currently.
It would be possible to engineer an emergency release option it wouldn't damage anything, if it literally ejected the plug, rather than having it ripped out by driving away.
Ok. Dummy me has tried to put my Tesla in drive after forgetting to unplug. You see where I’m going with this. Could be a very costly mistake. I doubt they’ll send you a free one for a mistake. Please don’t tell me to lie, commenters.
I'm really surprised that it lets you do that. It knows it is plugged in so why in the world do they let you drive?
In my opinion this is going to be the average use case. Accidentally driving away with the adapter in place after hitting stop charging because of another person in the car, a phone call or someone else distracting you. Not allowing a plugged in car to drive away solved a whole range of drive away problems that ice cars have.
You need to push "open charge port" and then you can drive away.
@@jarrod499Yes, I have gotten distracted while charging and if the station’s not busy, I’ll finish my call or solitaire game when charging is complete. Like I said, dummy me, but it’s happened a few times, and I have a slight feeling I’m nit alone in the dummy department.
Bad design. Since Tesla uses a standardized port location why not make this device with a right angle so the port faces the rear of the vehicle. This way when you drive away the charging cable simply pulls out and doesn’t destroy the device.

Maybe also there could be an on-screen emergency release option that stops the charge and retracts the locking thing. Leaving while plugged in will still probably damage something, but we get to live with stupid people, so the damage is probably preferable to talking with one of the stupid people.
Lets Take bets of how long it will take Tesla to block these from being used!!

Why wouldn't they make it reusable? Why would they make it so that it literally self-destructs in use? Why not make it like a giant "MagSafe wired connector" that has the lock clamps to hold it together when current is flowing?
I think the reason is that if somebody tripped over the cord and pulled it out before the charging was terminated, you draw a big arc with resulting injuries and property damage.
I like it but it does seem a bit unrefined for a first version. I'd rather see a magnetic contactor arrangement that can shear off when needed or a small pyro fuse that severs the connection. Would love to hear Sandy Munro's opinion on the resulting safety of it all.

I doubt if any EVs are faster than flying bullets.
$300 is a hard sell given that it's disposable (I doubt I would circle back to retrieve the ejected unit) and the likelihood of a threatening event is low. But if I had to charge frequently in a sketchy area, I might go for it.
You don't have to return the unit. They will ship you a new one as long as you show them a picture of the broken half in your vehicle and tell them what happened.

I do very little DC fast charging at night so couldn’t justify spending any more than $100 on this safety device.
Many other CZcamsrs have talked about this product for a while now. I still think it's too expensive and found it funny how you said it's only $300. I'm not saying it isn't a good product, because it is but safety shouldn't cost so much.
Yeah. Safety shouldn’t be a privilege for those who can afford it. It should be for everyone.
So while it does retail for $300, EVject has a LOT of coupon codes that offer $75 off, so while the "retail" is $300, just about everyone that buys it pays $225. Still not cheap, but a lot of time and money went into engineering and manufacturing this, so it wasn't going to be only $99. Maybe if it ends up selling in volume, the price will come down.

@@FuncleChuck If you watch the video, I do say that I don't recommend everyone buy it. But this is something that is a good device if you find yourself charging at public chargers in sketchy places. As for the discount code, it's 25% off, which is a pretty big deal - usually, these discount codes give you 10% - 15% off, but 25% is about $75, so that's a nice chunk of change. If you follow me you know I don't often do discount codes, but I do (and will) occasionally when the company offers them and I think it's a decent product. I'm not sure it's far likely (or likely at all) to hurt anyone, though. That said, thanks for the feedback.
I mean, if you absolutely have to charge in a diverse part of town maybe that justifies the cost. Better yet just stay as far away from them as possible, and put that $300 into the charging budget directly.
I do not agree with the fear mongering aspect. My wife was 5"00" and 85#'s. She had been hassled at gas stations in "good" areas. If she was driving a Tesla I would have bought this for her.

Tom I love your videos but please don’t go down this route with discount codes and kick backs. Just watching your video I have a bunch of issues that you either don’t mention or glossed over. The first is this type of “review” where you get a kick back on the discount code used but you don’t mention that anywhere. You might not need to legally state that but if you’re being transparent you should be clear that you are or aren’t benefiting financially from discount codes or affiliate links. You’re an experienced CZcamsr and one I trust but you need to be explicit when it comes to these situations.
The other issues I have are the single use of it, designing it to literally rip apart seems unnecessary. I would also bet Tesla will not want these things yanking at their charging stations so similar to charging adapters it should be made clearer. If you were doing a proper test you could see how much force it actually exerts on the charge port and station when it pulls apart.
On their main homepage they have a gif (with the black cybertruck) which has clearly been altered as it doesn’t show the device breaking apart, it even shows the broken bit already on the floor before it’s been detached. Why are they manipulating and misrepresenting how their device works in their own marketing material? Completely unnecessary and raises concerns.
Just buy some pepper spray instead

A big problem I see with Fords and likely others... When combined with a CCS adapter of course, is that you'd likely rip the chargeport door off with the cable.

How long does it take to hit all of the buttons, wait for the car or charger to respond, until you can drive away? Fumble for the remote for the CCS1 version? 3, 5, 7 seconds? That's an eternity for a bad guy to do harm.
You just hit one button. and in less than two seconds you can pull off.
EV manufacturers could definitely add a software mechanism to override the normal precautions and allow you to shift into drive or reverse after power had stopped flowing, basically a big **in emergency press here to shift into gear, warning that this WILL damage your vehicle AND the charger** and then you drive off without unplugging and deal with the consequences of the tens of thousands of dollars or damage you jut did once you're safe
I predict more people will be injured by high-voltage arcs from this device than this device will ever "save" by allowing quick getaway.
Not that I expect many people to get injured by these - far from it. It's just that "I MUST GET AWAY NOW!" is so exceedingly rare a need that I doubt it will ever happen to a user of one of these - so even one injury from this device will therefore exceed number of "saves".
It doesn't break away while the vehicle is charging. The EVject stops the vehicle from charging before it can go into gear.
I think a malfunction that causes it to be live anyway and cause arc flash is *more* likely than the situation from which this supposedly saves someone. Of course, it’s hard to compare near zero with near zero.

I have had comments made about it being unsafe to charge my car. All theories based on fear and not evidence.
If you consider a location is not safe, then just drive away as if it was broken.

On Teslas, can't you leave the door locked, stop charging on the screen, climb into the back and pop the hatch and pull the charge cable release? I have not tried it, but it is a physicl cable. Seems like the $300 it costs would be better spent lobbying the EV makers to add software to do this instead.
I think that unlocks plug so it can be pulled out, but if it's still sitting there, the car knows it's still sitting there and won't be willing to drive. And if you found a way to defeat that, maybe or by ripping some wires, you would still damaged some stuff when you drove away.
This is an extreme edge case but It seems to me it would be better solved with software. Instead of stopping the car from going into gear have the software flash a big RED blinking warning message and still let you leave. A better question is how many times per year EV owner been attacked while charging? I suspect thats a pretty low number.
It is a low number NOW but once adoption becomes more widespread and the criminal element figures out that EV drivers are sitting ducks - unlike at gas stations - there will be a rise in crime. Why do we have to wait for victims before we address the problem?
@@loriallen67 Like I said I think this problem is better solved with a software change instead of a $300 dongle. As far as being robbed while charging; I actually had a .38 stuck in my face while pumping gas many years ago. That didn't make me think armed guards should be at every gas pump or that I needed to spend $300 to defend myself. For the tiny number of times this happens it's just not worth it.
Ask EVject if it is engineered to have Kyle hanging wet rags on it when the NACS cable end overheats.
I feel bad for whoever uses that charging stall next and gets a screw in their tire
Create a problem that doesn’t exist, then sell a solution to the problem you created. Why does this product not exist for gas pumps?
Because you can drive away from a gas station at any time just by putting the car in drive. You cannot do that with an EV

What an insane, expensive single use item. If you’re that threatened to use this, just charge somewhere else.
There is a free replacement if you share your story of having to use it. I was concerned about the cost, too, until I saw that on their site. It’s still expensive, but it’s a safety feature in case you find the charger you need doesn’t feel safe.

That's not correct. You get a warning that it's open, but you can put it in gear and drive off. I own a Lightning and have tested this with a Mach-e also. Not sure where you got that from. Can you imagine how bad that would be? If someone breaks their door and it won't close the vehicle is immobilized. No manufacturer would ever do that.

So… this device disables the software protection of NOT being able to drive away while charging…? Hmmm. Maybe they should invent a similar device for gas nozzles…? Yet I can't imagine that would shut off the flow of gasoline!

Let the haters hate. As a female, this product appeals to me -IF I used dc chargers. I’ve been in some places that didn’t fill me with a feeling of safety and security. Women are sitting ducks at charge stations. And once the criminal crowd figures out drivers can’t drive away, chargers will be the new gas station robberies.
