- In this video I show you two ways you can chop samples on the SP404sx. This will also work exactly the same if you are using a 404a as well.
I hope you find this useful and if you have any questions or comments feel free to leave them below!

now, this was VERY useful! real nice tutorial too. thanks a bunch!
Your vidoes inspired me to get into sp404 a year ago, and I'm still learning from you. Really appreciate you man
Nice man! Glad the videos are helping you out 🙌
nice clean workflow, hadn't tried the second method before, might mix things up
Truncate just gave a whole new meaning to my SX, Thank You!
No problem 🙏
Appreciate your tutorials bro, great job!🙏🏾✊🏾
No problem man, thanks for watching again, glad to see them helping!
also you inspired me to order my first sp404a thank u i appreciate the vids keep it up!
Thats awesome man, welcome to the gang! (when it arrives obviously :))
Cheers mate. These bids have been so helpful for me. Noooob, purchased and starting from scratch.
Sorry bout the typo VIDS
Glad to help man! Cheers for watching :)
Great content as always. I would love to see you try different kind of samples, like making a hard boom bap or something, just to challenge yourself. Keep on the good work, much love!
Good idea man I want to do more soul stuff not sure why I haven’t actually as I’ve made a ton of soul beats in the past. Thanks for the idea!
excellent thank you
Nice video man . Cheers got my mpc1000 yesterday so been getting to grips with that going hook the 404 up with it later on man
awesome man, the 1000s seem to be picking up in popularity again!
The 1000 is loaded with effects??
that is a banger combo, a few of my friends do that, good luck with it! Much love
Great video my dude! You’ve really helped me overcome the learning curve of the 404sx. Is there a way to truncate both the start and end of a sample to create a perfect loop?
You can use the mark point twice. Press it once for the start and then again for then end whist holding the sample pad down - then you can adjust and truncate, that's how I would do it! I might do a video on that actually
Stoked you've been posting again man! Is there any big difference between recording in a sample through the line and using your computer to load them?
not really man no - i just use my computer to downpitch and timstretch so then I just export that as a wav and import directly onto the SD card - there wouldn't be much difference just using the rca input though
Spvidz I got a video recommendation can you do a video on how to use multiple samples from different songs to make your own one song
Thanks, I'll add it to the list
great video! is there a good way to dampen/remove drums from samples on the sp?
You could try isolator and resampling with various MFX - not an easy task though!
Any idea how to copy samples on an original SP 404. I have an old model and don't have a [FUNC.] button :( I looked all over and checked the manual with no luck. Thanks!
Hey man, i think you can only resample on the OG, there is no copy function!
just curious where do you find your jazz samples? i take it there royalty free ? its fine if you dont wanna spill the secrets but i have trouble finding good samples that aren't copy written.
I will do a video on how I find samples on CZcams soon man. And royalty wise - Chop, repitch, timestretch ;)
Man I don’t have much fun as in the beginning with the sp 404. It’s Always like find a sample, modify it, add drum, do a little structure, how can I break this ? What more can I do ? Cheers 🍻
I know the feeling man. I have struggled to take my beats past the same situation you are describing. Have you tried exporting out to a DAW and finishing your beats in there? I have been adding my laptop into my workflow more recently and getting better end results
spvidz Yes I work on ableton also, but like I can do anything the sp can on Ableton, I thought about doing drone music with sp only will see haha thank for the answer :)
There are a lot of ways to make beats, challenge yourself. For example: record sounds from around you and play with them, record your voice to make vocal samples, reverse samples, experiment with different generes of music... I hope I gave you some ideas, much love.
Musgo One Thanks mate good idea
Yeah... I was gonna suggest what Musgo One said. So i'll add: treat it as a multitrack recorder. So Pads 1-4 could be 4 sections of drum, 5-8 bass and 9-12 a melody. Record instruments or mobile apps. Use the onboard mic and try sound design with this.
Then mix and match what you did before with new stuff ;)
Oh yeah... and when Rec is armed, hit BPM and define your tempo. So when you stop recording, it will auto-mark the ending
SPVIDZ!!
What's the benefit of importing vs. recording the sample via line-in?
I downpitch and timestrech my samples using Ableton so then it makes sense to just export that as a wav and import it!
@@spvidz Thanks for the hedz up!
how do i cut the end of the sample ?
Press start/end then use the third dial
@@spvidz thanks for the help
Bro can I have that sample you using please bro
I dont give samples out sorry man, hunt the jazz playlists and you will find similar sounding stuff!
It is a great one tho🔥🤘
@@spvidz part of the fun is finding dope samples.
I agree - making beats should be a personal experience, I appreciate the feeling when you hear a sample you like and want to flip it though - I used to be the same. What I have done to combat that is slowly built up a stash that I can dip in to and make beats whenever. I keep adding to it regularly!
Yeah true that, it takes away the creativity and fun of finding the right sample
