Welcome/welcome back to the channel! I came to realised lately that I have a certain workflow for my beats on the SP404SX that seems to be used for about 90 - 95% of my beat making now. Hopefully you find it interesting to see what I do and it might give you some ideas to improve your beats or inspiration to change your own workflow. Hope you are all doing well out there and looking after yourselves and one-another.

It's easy to make a beat in FL. It's stupid difficult to make a *great* beat on FL.
@@spvidz whats the voltage and order link again can I buy it for sp202?
there is just something about the SP-404 that makes beats sound amazing I would honestly buy it just for how solid the fx/processing is on it.
Yeah its an incredible unit for just processing stuff!
The main reason I’d buy one

I just saw this advert of this on Facebook and thought I’d check it out on CZcams and came across you video ,it looks the business and you make it look simple to use
Hey man, advert for the 404? Its a fun sampler, takes a little bit of getting used to but once you understand the basics its really fun!
Was really liking this and then you popped in the Tupac sample and it went to a whole new level!! Great work 👍
Thanks for watching man. Appreciate the comment too 🙏

Glad to hear that man! appreciate the comment 🙏
great useful stuff! thank you!
Love your channel mate!
Glad to hear it, thanks a lot!
Great video. Love the idea of low on on the sample so that the drums cut through. I usually think in the opposite way...trying to avoid low end stuff becoming muddy, but this is a refreshing way of thinking about it. Just curious if you use sample packs or to you prefer to get drum sounds from chopping up samples?
Nice man. I think my beat making has probably changed a bit since making this video. I tend to use sample packs yeah. Would like to get more into chopping drum samples though
I really liked your recent beat tape on Soundcloud. Awesome vibes. Was also wondering if you recorded straight from the SP to Ableton or did you record it to cassette, etc. also was there processing on the master chain / how did you prep final mix. Cheers!
No tape deck unfortunately but I really want one in my workflow. Need to keep hunting. I’ve got two but both are broken! At the moment I go straight in to ableton then just boost the volume a bit and add a tiny bit of eq to smooth things out. Thanks for listening to the tape!
Cool. Thx and blessings. We love music 👌

@@sumoslap1973 same man,it’s so simple like i want a challenge,it just feels like my beats are boring when i use fl bc my creativity is skewed, with a mpc or sp i would be forced to be creative as possible

yes mate looks super handy. Can't wait to use it more when we're allowed out again haha
Good video
But let me ask you a question, ive been producing on logic pro for about 6 years .
Im acctually pretty much confortble on it. But at the same time Im thinking about getting one 404.
My question is, is there anything that logic wouldnt be able to do that a 404 would? Or is it more about the feeling play and Record lives? Thank you
The main advantage you will get from a 404 is all the mfx so you could process your beats made in logic through it. It’s a lot more limiting than computer based beat making but some people dig that!
Thanks bro!
No problem man! Thanks for sending the stuff :)
After the 7 min intro, it was a great video. Even if I don’t own that sampler. Cool video,

nice one man! Sorry if you were wearing headphones haha ;)
The main content of this video starts at 6:00 if you want to skip straight to that. Just needed to shoutout Pavel and MyVolts at the start for hooking me up with some free stuff!
Been using that same usb-to-9v with a splitter (3 way) to power two effects pedals and a midi switcher on my pedalboard. USB A on the Ripcord goes into my Anker power brick, and the usb C port on that same brick runs into a 529HC to convert it to the proper power for the HX Stomp which is the brain of the board.
I’ve been using my phone or iPad with various samplers and softsynths and stuff but I do want an SP. They just appeal to me.
The SP is a lot of fun and the FX are killer, for the price its definitely a solid investment!
@@spvidz I’m so with it. I tried to get into the ableton, daw-based, app-based, in-the-box production stuff because I’m so jealous of folks being able to whip up quick accompaniments or grooves or whatever but I’m definitely not a tech guy in THAT sense. I like instruments. I like playing them. The SP can’t sync wirelessly to my network and receive cat6 connections? Well, my main bass only has 4 strings and 21 frets sooooo that’s just the instrument. You can either make it sound good or not, but the limitations are not imperfections on the instrument, they merely show the imperfections of the player (you like that? It just came to me lol)
I love that 2pac sample! Keep it up!
Thanks man! Appreciate it 🙏
Pavelxpowers! Such a great dude.
Yeah man, he's been putting out some killer skins lately!
Great tutorial, buddy and how do you go about adding the bass to it? Regards
I dont lol. I never usually add bass to my beats, just use the bass from the original record that I've chopped. Its something I'd like to look into a bit more tbh as it can make a huge difference and really fill out the sound
i just bought the sp 404a with the roland mc 101 for the exact same reason as you, to make beats outside of my music room i spend too much time in. im hoping the fresh air and more organic natural sounds of the outside world can put me in a different creative space
Nice man. Will definitely help having a change of scene! Thanks for watching
@Ivan Valiente how is that working out? I have an mc 101 too, and i want to pair it with either the sp404a or an mpc. Are you using them together? Super interested!
Dope fam. Subbed!
Appreciate it man, thanks for that!
Great insight, also, may I ask you how quickly you could make a track with this and what do u think of the combo between MPC one and Roland 404? Also what is the best advice you can give to someone who wants to use samples but not run into copy write issues when uploading to you tube? What’s the rule of thumb?
The rule is simple - you cant lol. Its copyright and you shouldn't use it without permission. However if you chop, repitch, time-stretch that makes it a lot harder to be found by the algorithms...apparently 👀.. The SP devices work great with the MPC as well as you can use the FX to process your samples and beats
@@spvidz ahh right Hank’s for the insight. Are there any other devices that work great with it?
i love your videos i just got an sp 404 sx so im gonna be on these all the time!
also if you don't need any of those skins, I would love to use one :]
Nice one, welcome to the gang. Yeah there's plenty of content for you to watch :)

AANTO haha nice one!
SPVIDZ!!
i have no idea how to use hardware for beats but i really want to buy a 404 just for beat making then arrange it in logic
Makes sense man. Even just using it for the fx on your samples would be nice 👌
Heck yeah!!! I knew there was a converter for the sp
Super handy yeah!
I was thinking about modding it with an internal lithium battery like my pt01 scratch. I wonder what minimum MAH is required for optimal use.
How do you get a full mix out of the SP404SX? I’ve made a couple of beats on it and I love the workflow, but the mixes can be very low in volume. Not much volume or depth either. Love the videos man! Learned a lot from this channel!
hey mate I usually export into ableton, make sure I'm getting a good level and use the utility to bring up the volume a bit. There are some online 'fatteners' about as well that can help to bring up the volume of your beat. Glad you like the content!
@EmTee Good tips man yeah, EQing can really help boost things as well
spvidz hit cancel and turn volume knob up for individual pads ? Sp404 does this too
@EmTee you could probably get away with this the other way around. Master in daw with ozone , then run it through the sp404?
Good vibes and video bro
Cheers man, I've subbed to your channel too! Will check out your vids soon
spvidz thanks fam I appreciate you we can always learn from each other

Thanks a lot for your vidéo, helping a lot, bought your lofi drums set, my kick snare and hat are on 4,8,7 pads,, how i can exchange them to pads 1,2,3 as you ? Let me know thanks
There is an exchange option on the SX, use that to move them to the pads you need to. Thanks a lot for the support buying a pack as well!
@@spvidz i have lost 2 lifes trying to do it, i have a sp-404A but i think Its same, my button exchange is on pad 2, look like It need to be activated with shift if well understood, if I click on shift and pad 2 same time, all my pads are with Light but cant exchange it, damn i love this machine but without your vidéos was ending with Grey hairs hey hey

I know this is old, but since you mentioned the USB converter, I'm modding my sp. Im actually putting a USB power bank inside my sp404. And using one of those converters to power the device from the inside, and cutting a hole in the rear plate for a USB c port for charging. I've never seen anyone do it, even though its extremely simple. I'm gonna make a video detailing how to do it, as well as different levels of it. 👍🏻 idk. If any people see this and you're as interested in doing this as i am, i guess subscribe and I'll be posting a video in the next month or so
That sounds dope man!
Definitely wanna see that
Where I order usb cable? Are voltage etc same as sp202?
@@prestopasta_ it's on my channel 👍🏻 it's fuggin sick. Imo it's a must
@@rustymixer2886 you have to be careful with USB cables. Not all USB to 9v cables are the same. I posted a vid about this mod, and i go into it a little bit. My recommendation is the myVolts Ripcord. You can get it on amazon
Great video and easy to follow. I’d just like to see how you’d track the beats into the DAW
I don't tend to do that mate, i record the beat live into one channel in my DAW, so basically just records the signal coming out of my SP. I know what you mean about tracking beats out though and I'll do a video about that soon! Thanks for watching and leaving a comment
spvidz what do you get from recording the signal into the DAW rather than taking the file off of the card and just importing ?
+1 following // I struggling with keeping sample levels the same as I FX/resample. Thought I may need DAW to re-level/flatten.
Same. Using ableton to record but I feel like I'm missing some tips
@@spvidz please :)
Just got your drum pack bundle
Appreciate it man. Thanks a lot
Hi I was just wondering how u manige to keep the effects on when u hit different pads without having to change the effekt on various pads? Best regards
Press and hold remain - then select the pads you want the fx to be applied to
I didn't know you could resample the drum riff like that as a sample. I've been using a drum machine, or build a loop on another recorder, and then sample it, which is a pain.
Wutang cream🔥
How do you go about when trying to pitch sounds. I understand that the pitch feature on the SP404 isn't very good. Is there a work around for that?
its not good at all no. You can either use a DAW and then record/import the sample from there, or quite a lot of the time I use other hardware such as an SP202 which has great repitching or the MPC2000xl too. If you are recording from vinyl you can use your deck to slow the record down too
@@spvidz Blessings! And thank you for the response.
does it have to be connected to a daw or something or is it all recorded on the device?
The way I'm explaining in this video, I'm recording to an external device yes. It doesn't have to be a DAW but it usually is for me. You could also use a portable reecorder. a tape deck etc etc
how do you get the drum loop that you record to be in time with the sample? are you just memorizing the tempo of the sample in your head?
yup. Tap it out with the samples first, then resample
Hey man where'd you sample the keys from? Really cool video btw
I can't remember with this one sorry man - this upload is over a year old now :)
@@spvidz Ah alright. No worries man. Looking forward to more videos. Cheers!
can't import samples to my SD card. The Roland wave convertor says 'import failed' when i import any sample.
Have you formatted the card using your sp?

Cheers for watching!
so i’m thinking about getting an SP. i’m leaning towards the 404a as I can get 48 months 0% financing with it however, it is more expensive than a brand new SX. do y’all think the 404a is worth it?
They are basically the same man. Only difference is the paint job and there’s some extra software in it to help it sync with other Roland products but that is IT! Same box same MFX etc. Hope that helps
I saved hundreds buying a new old stock SX from Japan compared to grabbing the A from the store.
There a fun machine but I would see if you can pick up a zoom sample track 224. Has a few functions that the do can’t do like more polyphony while resampling and play and record at the same time.
Fair man, I'm not sure myself on that one!
is this a standalone piece of equipment ?? like I don't have to have it hooked up to my DAW ?
You don't have to but it really helps, especially as there is no way to export beats on this machine
Just curious why don’t you use the pattern sequencer more for your drums and samples. And again just curious why don’t you chop your loops more like say into quarter notes so you can play around with it more. I guess to see what I’m talking about I got some examples on my channel FYI. Much respect ✊
This video is a year old now, I have since starting using the pattern sequencer a lot more if you see my more recent videos. This is also not me saying I chop every single sample at the same points it’s just a workflow video to show people how I was making beats at the time. I have also done videos more recently about chopping smaller parts of samples to make beats
Damn, now I wonder what the tape sounded like. It’s gone now, though. Or that’s what it looks like at least.
I've seen that adapter by MyVolts being used with a battery pack, i'm curious, not sure if you said it, can it be used with a standard phone charger brick..?🤔
I've been charging mine up to see if it works. Answer is I'm not sure at the moment! Would be great if it works
now how do you get the sounds from the 404 to your daw? no videos ive seen detail how to record the sounds coming from the 404
this may help czcams.com/video/LhAt4ZxIqek/video.html
if anyone sees this, what exactly is the differnece between all the 404s. all i could find was the type of memory card and that the OG 404 degraded samples
404 OG is also a bit slower and you can't copy/paste patterns which if you like using the pattern seq is obviously a massive downside and slows down beat making a lot. Memory wise as well the OG is vastly out performed by the SX. You can have up to 32gb on the SX and with it being SD its much easier to work with, with a computer. The difference between the 404sx and A is basically nothing apart from the colours and a few software updates to help it sync with other Roland products.
yup
What's the limit on triggering stereo and mono samples in resampling mode? It seems like I only can trigger a maximum of 2 or 3 stereo samples at the same time when resampling. Can this be right?
From the manual - "While resampling, the maximum is 4 monaural or 2 stereo samples."

What software is best for the SP404a and what other equipment do I need to finish my setup ??
not sure what you mean by either of these questions sorry man. What software are you referring to? Its also a bit of an open ended question about finishing your set up, everyone uses different gear
@@spvidz like the software compatible to the sp. also other equipment like a mixer or output? Anything I need to know that is mandatory to have when it comes to owning a sp404a
still dont understand, software capabilities? are you talking about what you need on your computer to get the beats off your SP? I just have an audio interface although a mixer would also work. I bounce all my beats into Ableton but you could even use something free like Audacity or a handheld recording device like a Zoom H5
Hello thank you for the tutorial i benefit a lot

May I ask you how to sidechain on sp, thank you~~
Basically, you can't. There are a few hacks out there but I'm not sure how much I believe them. The main one is drop the levels of your samples, have a loud kick and use compression on everything. That might help.
