  • Today we have a 5th gen 2000 Honda Prelude, in its base trim. It’s a time machine for me, the styling really takes you back to the 90’s, and with such a loveable engine, it’s what made Honda so iconic back then. This is really the finale for the Prelude, it had an amazing run from 1978-2001, but is it still worth buying in 2023?
    🚗 Vehicle in This Video:

    Don't lug and grunt the auto tranny like that. That's how it blows. Use the sequential shift and keep it in the proper power band. These autos die due to bad driving habit, overheating and fluid maintenance neglect. Install an external inline filter(from 04 and up Accord or CRV with k24) as well as an external tranny cooler. Replace the fluid at least once a year if you do hit vtec often. High rpm will tear the fluid down faster.

    I enjoyed this 5th gen prelude review! I have a 5th gen Type SH and I’m still driving it like I stole it at 350,620 miles on the odometer currently. Mine being a manual makes all the difference for me. Most of my upgrades are suspension related to get the most fun out of my twisty backroads!!

    I've owned my 97 Prelude SH since 2002 and it's such an analog feeling time capsule every time I drive it. It's obviously not as quiet and comfortable as my CRV with DI turbo, CVT, carplay nav, and all the safety sensors, but there's something about the raw mechanical feel or rowing the gears and visceral experience of taking corners at crazy speeds. Despite the extra ATTS weight, the cornering is far more precise and aggressive than this stock example and 0-60 is almost a second faster than the finicky automatic. This one does look very nice on the outside.

    Nice Car! I have a 2000 Maxima with automatic transmission and tons of bolt on but on my 4-speed transmission mission I did the valve body upgrade, 3000 stall converter and a transmission cooler, all of which helped my car shift better and makes the car pulls completely different.

      @@jubbalandcars Great video, and correct me if I'm wrong, but it was the 80's Prelude that had 4 wheel steering. The SH stands for Super Handling, which used torque vectoring to drive more power to the outside wheel in a turn. Preludes were usually the first tobe equipped with Honda's latest tech.

  • @etirnty3837
    @etirnty3837 Před 8 měsíci

    Compared to first gen frs/brz speed is actually almost identical as well as power. SH also does not have 4ws it has atts. Type sh is also slower and more problematic. Best power to weight ratio of any Honda as well outside nsx/s2000 that we got anyway

    • @lukatrdina5108
      @lukatrdina5108 Před 5 měsíci

      SH is not more problematic, if anything, it's less so. People regularly remove 4WS, and I have never heard someone remove ATTS, they are more desirable for a reason, as they actually affect cornering (unlike 4WS which is just a cool concept and comes in handy when parking). Also, not sure what makes you think they are slower, but I have no experience with comparing their speed, all I know is that the Japanese-only Prelude Type S had ATTS and not 4WS, so I doubt they opted for the "slower and more problematic" version for their Type S model

    • @etirnty3837
      @etirnty3837 Před 5 měsíci

      @@lukatrdina5108it is not problematic in the sense people don’t enjoy it, the problem is all the sensors are long discontinued and the different suspension parts are triple the price of the base model. Type s also has no sunroof and 220hp so the weight difference is made up for. However type s is not the pinnacle prelude. It is sir s spec which is red top and LSD. Non atts.

    If the prelude was RWD, it might have not been replaced by the s2000. The prelude has classic sports coupe proportions, long nose, low hood. I believe there are laws now with pedestrian crash safety standards for cars that make cars taller in the front end (crossover look), so no cars can look like the preludes again. Although I own a 5th gen prelude, I can see why these died out: FWD, 4 cylinder but heavy, use premium fuel, not all that quick, and cramp for a car that’s not all that small, use proprietary h22 engine… plus Honda killed off all their sports cars: del sol, rsx, s2000, nsx, civic si, crz, crx… even the accord coupe which they were banking on as their sports car was eventually discontinued.
    But what once was outdated is cool again. I think people will long for sports coupes again after years of boring crossover SUVs. And the prelude looks like a product of a bygone era. When these cars become rare, then I think the public will have more appreciation for them.
