Today we hop in Honda's black sheep - the Honda Prelude. This fifth generation Honda Prelude is a relic of a by-gone era with its Hondata piggyback system, early 2000's style, and much more. This 5th Generation Honda Prelude has a H22A engine swap that is an absolute BLAST to drive - so I ask the question... why is there not more love for the Honda Prelude? Let's talk about it

I've two 4th gens and loved both of them. The second one I had the previous owner dumped a ton of money into it and the thing was legit fast. The H series engines are decent platforms. They just don't have the aftermarket support and they start off heavier than a Civic so they get overlooked. They're vanishing very quickly. I hardly see any on the road now
Also as a testament to how tough the H series is (the one I'm mentioning here is the H23) the first Prelude I had the previous owner had an actual cold air intake, like he cut a hole in the wheel well and routed the intake right above the ground. Being very young and not knowing shit about cars I hydrolocked that engine, twice. Both times all I did was drain the water and mush out of it, fill it with new oil and kept going. Kept it for another five years and had not a single issue from it.

The Prelude was the first Honda sports car and they handle great from the factory. That 5thgen in this video is a nice example. When I was in automotive school in LINY they had a black 2001 Type SH with 300 miles that was donated from the Honda Factory for us to learn on(I went to Auto School over 15 years ago).

I have a 2001 white SH with 76,000 mi and zero rust (in NY). 100% original except radio. I bought it from a friend in 2007 with 24,000 mi. I drove it once so far this year, but it snowed again earlier this week so I have to wait for some more rain to wash any salt off the road again. I felt guilty, so I replaced the original plugs a couple days ago. Absolutely zero oil or carbon. If I hadn't already bought new ones, I'd have put them back in. In my opinion, 98% of the problems people have with these are caused either by kids flogging them unmercifully (esp automatic transmissions), or working on them when they have no clue which end of a screwdriver to grab hold of. I have not seen one how-to repair video of a Prelude on YT that was made by anyone that I would let within 100 yards of my car with a tool in their hand. People ripping parts off and laying them in the yard or middle of the driveway, tools scattered all over the place. Another problem is people putting a bunch of junk non-OEM parts on them. If I seem harsh, remember... They're a Honda. If you have to dick with them all the time, you're doing something wrong. BTW, I'm 69 years old and have owned 4 Hondas since 1989. I've seen and learned a few things. Properly maintained, they're reliable and durable.

People picked a civic because they wee more common, and less expensive.
If I recall, Prelude weighs more then some of the other honda cars people like to tune which matters to some people.
The Prelude nametag is sort of out of sight out of mind now. A relic from the 90's, forgotten because it was replaced. Like Dodge Intrepid, Nissan Pulsar, etc. nametags that were instantly recognizable but people have forgotten to time.

I went from a 1991 prelude si to 97 prelude base to a 2001 Prelude sh and I fully decked it out but not overboard. Just black on black leather, lowered, full stock lip kit, all the bolt ons from full exhaust to intake to headers and light tint. It was immaculate condition. It was the cleanest prelude ive ever seen and man it drove so nice but it was definitely too heavy but it did handle like a dream and it still had nice power and sound it just lags in the lower gears but once you get into 3rd and vtec kicks in it really starts to make up for its slower start. I was only one in my area with a Prelude and was known as the Prelude guy. I felt really unique and it was so fun. Also the vtec just sounds so amazing in the 2001 sh. Its super robotic very similar to the Rsx. Oh and mine was a 6 speed stick!

The OEM FRM liners on the H22 are actually quite stout for an OEM unit, specifically the OBD1 H22A which had a semi closed deck. It was arguably one of the strongest of OEM cylinders Honda produced untill the S2000 came around, which also has FRM liners and is known to take insane amounts of boost in OEM form. The real issue is the cast pistons of the H22, they have weak ringlands which are prone collapse under higher boost levels. Throw in the primitive tuning methods of the 90s and early 2000s and you have a recipe for disaster. FMUs running 80 psi of rail pressure on the back side of stock injectors, APEXi VAFCs, fish tank check valves inline with map sensors, etc. The whole "H22s have weak cylinders" was a myth that came around in the early 2000s. It's not the cylinders, it's the pistons. Throw some Mahle Gold pistons in it and a set of rods and they'll take +800 whp on the FRM liners.

They handle like RWD cars in the twisties as most Hondas from the 90s do. They’re engineered to handle “neutral” which I guess the default would be what RWD cars feel like. You can get oversteer in the corners if you’re a good driver and the car encourages it.

hated no, the h22 was a great engine what people hated was in the SH model it had the atts which is a good feature for a stock or lightly modified car but it held the h22 back for high power. if you got the base model that came without the atts system in the transmission you were able to achieve respectable power numbers. that being said the H series def didn't have as good of a market at the B and D series motors as far as aftermarket performance options go and the H series with an exhaust didnt sound that great its like the K series you have to find the right exhaust to get a good sound out of it. I've had all 3 and the B series was my fav as far as modding goes when I found my 97 prelude 5 yrs ago it was bone stock an older gentleman owned it and I left it bone stock and then the unfortunate happened early this year the upper radiator hose ruptured on the freeway and got hot immediately and warped something internally. was a depressing day I loved that car the way it was and was a great car, something I wish I would have caught sooner to prevent

I got my hands on a beater 98 Prelude for cheap. It has a few gremlins and the body needs a bit of love but nothing mayor. I'm stoked to restore it.

I have a 2001 Prelude and I can agree that it is an amazing car. You get classic 90's Honda feel with a premium twist. I don't think anyone ever hated the prelude, it was just the middle child of Honda once the S2000 was released. Now that I own one I tend to have an eye for more preludes. I've come to notice that most of the remaining clean, stock preludes are owned by old people. Don't really know why, I just tend to see more old people driving them than I do younger people

I have one of these (1997 5th gen) with the same intake. Just love the car!
