    I have a 1950 folio society edition of pride and prejudice, it’s engraved and has beautiful illustrations and the best part was that I found it in a used books bookstore and it wasn’t expensive at all, it’s so pretty 🎀

      its not that bad the story is engaging enough to make you want to keep reading and the chapters are short. The only complaint is you have to wade through some of Tolstoy's philosophy on history which he beats you over the head repeatedly . Other than that it has some of the best insights on the human condition I have ever read.

    What a wonderful presentation of these beautiful tomes! I love Folio Society, and I think your presentations of their work are more impressive than those on their own website. They would be wise to hire you to film videos like this for each new release.

    I collect folio too but they really are hit or miss…fehranheit 451 is a good example. Something about it looks tacky. Brave New World and Orwell deserve better too. Folio knocks some other sci fi out of the park though. That Dune is awesome. By far the coolest looking Folio book I have is short stories by Philip K Dick.

    What amazing books! I'm still hoping to pick up Midnight's Children and Slaughterhouse Five before this sale is done! Really want Dune and Lord of the Flies, too!
    On a different note, I just picked up this oversized boxed set Lord of the Rings trilogy (ISBN: 9780618260584) with the Alan Lee illustrations for 50% off! So I was planning on keeping it hidden away and only using it as a reading copy, because the dust jackets were just plain hideous. But then I decided to try taking off the jacket, and there was a beautiful clothbound book underneath! With the black slipcase, the red cloth bindings look really pop out and look nice. Anyway, it turned out to work way better than expected. But I'm still . . . slightly jealous about that Folio Society Lord of the Rings.

    So many beautiful books! I like bookshelf tours. I'm curious about your FS The Lord Of The Rings. What version is the text? Is it the same as in the 60th anniversary edition with fully corrected and revised text in collaboration with Christopher Tolkien by HarperCollins or is it some other version?

    • @BookCravings
      @BookCravings  Před 7 lety

      This edition was released for the first time in the 70s. I believe it contains the third revision, but I'm not sure it's the same released by Harper Collins in the 60th anniversary. I'll try to find out!

  • @katietatey
    @katietatey Před 4 lety +1

    These are beautiful but I'm curious about the insides. Do they lie flat when open? What type of paper is it? How is the type size and font? Do they have deckel edges? I think the case for each book would bug me... they are protecting the books but also covering them up and making it more tedious to remove one (not to mention taking up space). I would rather just have the books on the shelf, but I'd be reluctant to toss the cases. (Like some of my books that have ugly dust jackets but the book underneath is nice - I can't bring myself to throw away the dust jacket). Anyway, the outsides are beautiful and the shelves look so nice with one brand on them. I'd love to own just one Folio title... maybe I will search one out. I've never seen one in person. :)

    • @BookCravings
      @BookCravings  Před 4 lety +1

      katietatey they all lie flat open and the paper varies. I haven’t seen a Folio book with deckled edges so far. Some people keep them out of their cases.

  • @hsiaoshuang
    @hsiaoshuang Před rokem

    I used to be a sucker for Folio books and after more than 30 years I've probably collected more than 200 volumes. I've finally stopped buying them for several reasons: (1) the paper is not acid-free. In Singapore where I live, the humidity is 100% and within six months of unwrapping the plastic sheet, yellow dots start to appear! (2) the prices are exorbitant, in expensive English pound sterling, (3) the quality of the illustrations is uneven. The Wizard of Oz has beautiful clearly printed drawings but the Arabian Nights pictures are poor reprints of old artwork. Most of the current titles have weird, grotesque abstract images which may look arty-farty but are not related to the book.

    • @BookCravings
