    wow, books from the folio society are so expensive though. I'm reading all these books, but I buy thrift books cause I'm very young and I only have a part time while I study. In the future, I plan on investing in a fine library to leave for my children, and just donate all the paperback I buy now

I used to buy the Franklin Mint books then later on the Easton Press ones but it was too expensive, plus I didn't have the shelve space for them. Can you please tell me where you got your Augustus statue (with his raised arm - I saw the real statue and it is exquisite, unfortunately I didn't get a statue of him when I was in Italy)? I was going to ask you about your Harper Collins Tolkien editions. Did you have to find used copies? They look really nice.
      I also buy Folio Society and Easton Press books and I've always considered Easton Press books to be of higher quality/collectability, (from your response to Pigeonman) They just seem, to me, more elegant, albeit more costly. Could you elaborate on that?
      By the way, you have a very, very nice collection. I didn't see any paperbacks. Do keep those separately?

    Where do you get these books? they all, like, ALL, look aesthetically cohesive, all different but somehow like they all belong together. Trying to make my own bookshelf nowadays is so hard because all books sold on stores are ugly and in different styles, it's a disgraceful mix.
    For now, i am only focusing on Penguin Classics editions of my books, not the most gracious edition, but at least all covers and spines are the same, it's beautiful and really cheap, so I can read them faster and on the move. My intention is to later on in my life, with time, swap all these editions for Leatherbound editions like yourself, but I can't find most of these books on sale. Most are out of stock and the only ones available on amazon or so, are like 300£. Why the hell publishers don't make nice editions at affordable prices anymore? Folio Society only makes a certain amount of books so they go out of stock fast, and it's hard to build a library when most books aren't available... :( I need suggestions!

      Hi, Leather Library! I am a really poor reader! My favourite book is Exploring The Earth and Moon by Patrick Moore. I found it difficult to read but enjoyed what I read in the book but I forgot basically all I read in the book immediately after I had read it. It is a really tasty work though, with 'Lovely' juicy coloured pictures in it. I also really like the Mr Men books.

    • @Kevin15047
      @Kevin15047 Před 8 lety +1

      Mike Fuller
      You might find it helpful to write short chapter summaries. When you finish a chapter maybe write down one or two very important events. No fine details. For example, here's my note on chapter 8 of Don Quixote, "Don attacked some windmills (giants) and some monks (wizards). Chapter ends with Don doing battle with a squire." It can also be helpful to keep a list of characters, for those times you find yourself wondering who someone is at chapter 40 who hadn't been mentioned since chapter 5. Actually, I'll link you the book where I found these tips.www.amazon.com/Well-Educated-Mind-Classical-Education-Expanded/dp/039308096X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1472753008&sr=8-1&keywords=the+well+educated+mind It's really a self instruction to classical education and encompasses literature, autobiography, history/politics, plays, poetry and science. But I think its worth it if you only apply some tips from the literature section.

    • @sherlockholmeslives.1605
      @sherlockholmeslives.1605 Před 8 lety +2

      Awww! Thank you very kindly for the help, Kevin but I am afraid to say that I am a factual person more than being able to follow plot lines but yet these notes are a factual key to learning something much larger! I think Mr Men books and things like the 1986 RAC Guide Book are my level of interest! I do like compiling list of polymaths and brilliant people but too much reading I find difficult. I have learned the 99 line poem by WH Auden, September 1, 1939, ironic date to mention I know, but that is concentrated learning more than following plot lines of a story, and poetry unlike prose is more general fact, Goethe said, and I hope I am not going off at a tangent, or at least too much of one, that the difference between prose and poetry is whether the imagination is active or not. That in prose we are taken by the hand and shown everything in detail, where as in poetry we fill in the description more with our imagination. To get back to my point, poetry lines are often like pieces of fact that are complete and stand by themselves, where as in prose and stories the description merges too much in my mind to take in so well. With Best Wishes! Cheers - Mike.

    I want to read A Song of Ice and Fire but I’m not going to buy any of the books until Martin finishes the story. I don’t think he will though. He’s old and very overweight. And I’m sad to say I think he could pass away before he finishes the series. I don’t see the point in getting into a series that probably won’t get finished. He’s been working on the current book for almost a decade right? And there’s still another book after that one.

      There’s no reason to get invested in a unfinished story whos author will probably die of old age before he finishes it! I hope he does finish it but I just don’t think he will. I just feel like he’s not interested in finishing it either. He’s made his millions, he’s old...what’s the incentive to finish it? HBO did it for him. I didn’t really like how HBO ended the series personally. But it’s finished nonetheless.

Franklin Library is already defunct and Easton Press I am sure will follow. Collect these while you can, while they are still relatively affordable, if you are a bibliophile.

      rmwtsou As today's sophisticates and cube-dwellers rush to achieve their ultimate goal of modernist zen minimalism by tossing their libraries in favour of e-readers, I follow in their footsteps and buy up their old books wherever I find them. Ditto our library discard sales. Maybe I'll be the future's version of a crazy cat lady, but I'll be a happy one.

      rmwtsou I'm not gonna say ebooks are a complete fad, but I think most people who really value literature and written knowledge of all kinds always value physical books. I'm 19, but I know a good amount of people my age who prefer physical books, so don't lose hope my friend. I've noticed even when it comes to video games, people are starting to prefer physical copies in favor of digital downloads.

      leatherbound books will remain a niche market, It may be a small market but it won't go away, we just wont have a wide variety of people/companies producing the books as we have had in previous years.

    I just found your videos yesterday and replied to one of your replies below to Pigeonman. I didn't know if CZcams makes you aware of that.
    Also, I noticed that you do tobacco and pipe videos. Just curious if you keep your books away from any tobacco smoke, as it can affect value.
    Thank you.

      Good idea, but then you probably knew that.
      You seem like someone who takes great care of his books.
      I was also noticing your nice, glass covered book shelves.
      Thanks for your videos. I'll be watching.
      I'll be sure and check out your blog as well.
