    In our latest Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim video we delve into the lore of the Heart of Lorkhan.
    The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is an open world action role-playing video game developed by Bethesda Game Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks. It is the fifth main installment in The Elder Scrolls series, following The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and was released worldwide for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on November 11, 2011.
    The game's main story revolves around the player character and their quest to defeat Alduin the World-Eater, a dragon who is prophesied to destroy the world. The videogame is set two hundred years after the events of Oblivion, and takes place in the fictional province of Skyrim. Over the course of the game, the player completes quests and develops the character by improving skills. The game continues the open world tradition of its predecessors by allowing the player to travel anywhere in the game world at any time, and to ignore or postpone the main storyline indefinitely.

      Wait, but that just means they're in a time loop then? They went back in time and keep trying to tap the Hearts power but keep getting sent back in time to start from scratch?
      You'd think Kagrenac's work would be kept throughout the ages so they'd be more successful each time in terms of tech 🤔

    OMFG! The Amulet of kings being the blood of Lorkan and not Akatosh makes so much sense; especially if you’re a follower of the last Dragon born is Shor in mortal form theory. The gift of the Thuum was given to men to be free from the rule of dragons, almost every dragon born we can think of in lore is human (Mankar may be an exception) and The dragonborns purpose is specifically to hunt and devour the souls of other Dragons, dragons being the physical representation of Akatosh, the god responsible for Lorkans death. It’s as if he got his ultimate revenge.

  • @nakenmil
    @nakenmil Před 5 lety +72

    Okay, so here's some things I've picked up from deep lore discussions around the web on this topic:
    1. The Dwemer succeeded. Sorta. Their souls were transmuted into the gold armor of the Numidium, thus they became one with the god they invented. What exactly this means is unclear. This is based on a forum post by Kirkbride several years ago (yes, I know he is controversial, but it's at least one explanation offered).
    2. The "soul" that the heart gave Nirn is... time. Prior to the Heart landing in the earth of Nirn, time was non-linear and had no direction or pace. But a heart beats at a steady pace, thus granting time a rhythm and direction, and linear time. This is really interesting because time is otherwise associated with Akatosh/Auriel, the Dragon God. This isn't the only time Lorkhan and Akatosh seem to have an odd relation with each other, however - like the origin of the Amulet of Kings mentioned in the video. It's possible that the two are just opposite facets of something greater, much like Anu and Padomay once were. Akatosh's role in the ending of the world through Alduin each kalpa (cycle of existance) seems to also tie into this duality - Lorkhan/Shezzar creates the world, Akatosh/Alduin destroys. Or maybe it's more complicated?
    3. Lorkhan means "Doom Drum" in Aldmeri, and is probably a reference to his beating heart, and what it means in the worldview of elves.
    4. The tools used by Kagrenac are references to tuning devices, as his the title "tonal architect", all references to the rhythm and pitch of the heartbeats. The idea seems to be that the Dwemer were seeking to exploit the Heart's powers by either altering, imitating, or enhancing the Heart's beats.

    • @papanurgle8393
      @papanurgle8393 Před 5 lety +15

      It's because all of creation in TES is a song, so sound based magics are especially powerful. Every single thing in TES adds it's own part to the Song of creation itself.
      It's why the Hearbeat is so powerful and Shouts are such a fundamental, divine and powerful force (in theory) because speaking the words literally slips notes into the song of the world.
      Also makes it pretty damn clear that Dragons are BY FAR the most absurdly bad-ass race in Tamriel.

    • @p.samedi2473
      @p.samedi2473 Před 3 lety +2

      So if you imitate the heart with the same, steady heartbeat, you could imitate some kind of nirn.
      Like sethi did. Or at least tried to.

    • @thalmoragent9344
      @thalmoragent9344 Před 3 lety +5

      I don't think the time part is accurate, with all due respect.
      Its said Auriel, as the first established God of Time, had to set time as an actual thing, and make it Linear, so that the other Et'Ada could actually learn and make something of themselves and understand themselves.
      So I think the Soul that Nirn has is a divine spark that allows for Mundus to be somewhat more stable, or keep Lorkhan's essence grounded into Nirn in Mundus, so his work couldn't easily be undone.
      Plus, think about it, we have Talos now, the one who mantled Lorkhan's spot amongst the Divines, and it's after the Heart is essentially "deactivated" by the Nerevarine in Elder Scrolls 3 Morrowind

      #4 is excactly right. The dwemer were trying to manipulate the beat of the heart in order to extend their lifespan (+ other side projects i guess). Probably the dwemer-tuned heart also gave them access to a "hive-mind" communication. This can explain i) their extremely fast technological progress, because they shared all the knowledge availiable to their race (i mean the were well pas the 1st industrial revolution nad close to the second), and ii) their sudden and simutaneous death when kagrenac desperately tried to re-tune the heart to change the result of the battle of red mountain (probably the numidium was the end game research tech for the dwemer which wasnt ready, but kagranac, so desperate as he was, gave it a shot). The dwemer were so atuned socially and physically to their telepathetic link that could neither comprehend existance nor withstand living without the heart's beat after generations of its divine magic affecting them. That itself is another crazy story in my opinion about how fraudulent of a god Lorkhan was, letting them to freely play with his heart untill their unintentional suicide.

Sithis is something in the middle; he's not really a god, but he does have a certain amount of will. But he's not a person either.

    I think that Kangrenac suceeded in what Aldmer aspire to. With heart of Lorkhan he un-created whole dwemer race and sent them to Aetherius.
    Also Amulet of Kings being soul gem containing souls of past emperors makes so much sense. Every emperor had access to superhuman levels of wisdom which is probably big part of reason why empire was so successful for so long and why it started falling apart after Oblivion crisis...

      Would have been realistic if Vivec didn't straight up say that he cannot sense the present of the Dwemmer , One of the most powerful Gods in all of Aurbis is not capable of sensing the Dwemmer presence .
      Here is what ACTUALLY happened
      In Skyrim , a man called Phinis Gestor actually engineered the events of the Downfall of Dwemmer and asked the Dragonborn to help him replicate the Experiment Kragrenac did with the Heart of Lorkhan but on a significantly lower scale . He taps into a soul Gem using precise custom tools , the moment he taps into the soul gem , he gets trapped inside the Dragonborn, so we can assume what happened from here
      When Kragrenac tapped into the Heart of Lorkhan using The Keening and the other Tools of Kragrenac , the Entire Dwemmer race was trapped inside the Brass God , The Numidium .
      So
      The Dwemmer = Phinis Gestor
      The Tools of Kragrenac = Phinis Gestors tools
      The Heart of Lorkhan = The Soul Gem
      The Numidium = The Dragonborn
      The scale was , of couse , far bigger for the Dwemmer
      The Heart of Lorkhan is literally higher infinitely Superior to a Soul Gem
      The Numidium is superior to the Dragonborn
      The Tools of Kragrenac is superior to the Tools of Phinis Gestos .
      The Summoning of Dwarven spheres are from normal Dwemmer Ruins rather then the Actual Dwemmer as there is no possible way the Dwemmer Technology went with the Dwemmer
      The Dwemmer currently are rotting as the Brass Skin of the Brass God of their own creation , They are at the same place as Numidium or whats left of The Numidium . Them turning their backs to the gods and trying to Tapping into Lorkhan's Divine Magic ended up trapping them in The Numidium .

    As best as I can tell from the extant lore, Kagranac's tools had already been used to tie the entire Dwemer race to the Heart of Lorkhan (in addition to the Heart being set up as their supergolem's power source). Kagranac's act appears to have either severed or activated that connection.
    Since the Heart of Lorkhan is literally tied to the mortal plane, "activation" would seem to have sucked the Dwemer into Mundus, similar to how ancient spirits became the Earthbones. Conversely, "severed" would indicate they were all simply cut free from Mundus - and if that were undirected, they would have either all gone "zero-sum" or been "ejected" from Mundus entirely. The latter would suggest they were scattered across Oblivion and/or the Aetherius, but there would likely have been some trace of them showing up over the last few thousand years, other than the one guy who was already IN the Outer Planes at the time.
    So I'm thinking either they zero-summed or became a new set of Earthbones. Either way, sucks to be them.

    • @Alizudo
      @Alizudo Před 4 lety +4

      If they Zero-Summed, the entire dwarven race would have been completely erased from time itself; they never would have existed in the first place. There would be no evidence, no books, no ruins, no armor, no caves, NOTHING. That's the paradox of Zero-Summing; everyone that does it, is completely erased from ALL of history IMMEDIATELY.

    A very complete lore video about Lorkhan, the Missing God. I would have added that the heart of Lorkhan is litteraly his divine essence, and by ripping it from his chest, the Aedra (and not the Magna-Ge, they had already fled back to Aetherius) actually severed Lorkhan from his divine spark, and he lost his nature as a god. That's why very few mortals actually worship him or even know about him, despite his central role in the creation of Mundus : he doesn't exist as a god anymore, but more as a "ghost", a part of Nirn. His vacant place in the pantheon (hence his title : the Missing God) allowed Talos to rise as God of the Mortals, but that's a much more complicated story.

      That's literally the creation cycle of TES universe as a whole, and it's a pretty well established fact. You can either read off the wiki or dig through lore books in the game yourself, Elven or not. The only point of contrition or theological friction is how the various races and cultures interpret it.
      High Elves (I assume wood elves too) see him badly because in their eyes he took godhood from them.
      Most races of men worship or respect him in some way because he's the reason they get to live.
      Dunmer ironically respect him because he's the reason they may be tested.
      Beastmen, it ain't clear. Khajiit like Alkosh (their version of Akatosh) while Argonians honor the Hist Trees (who are connected to Sithis).
      Padomay is change and Chaos, Anu is stasis and Order, morality, good or evil, right and wrong ECT doesn't even begin to show up as concepts until MUCH, MUCH later, (through Mortal Lenses) so there aren't "good" and "bad" sides. Padomay and Anu are essentially concepts opposed to one another, and from them the Universe simply is.
      Padomay is the opposite of Anu.
      His spirit, Sithis, is the counterpart to Anui-el.
      And Sithis' spirit is Lorkhan, the counterpart to Auriel (or Akatosh), spirit of Anui-el.
      For all intents and purposes, Daedra and Aedra are the same thing in a vacuum, and are all et'Ada (Original Spirits). The only major differences being that
      1
      Aedra are composite born from the blood (or essence) of Both Anu and Padomay while the Daedra are "purely" made up of the Blood of Padomay. The only "pure" Anu beings out there are the Magna Ge (two whole other cans of worms).
      2
      Aedra (elvish for Our Ancestors) gave up some of their power to create Nirn and the Daedra (not our ancestors) basically laughed at the idea and kept their power. It's why Daedra are overall stronger than Aedra, but have little hold on Nirn since they didn't give any of their selves to make it in the first place.
      Sithis is still basically the "father" of the Daedra and Lorkhan was the greatest among them (though you could say he's not a Daedra anymore, but ironically the greatest of the most selfless and devoted of the Aedra since he literally gave up ALL of himself for Nirn), much like Akatosh is the greatest among the "Anu" side of first spirits. Both are unique in their respective "sides" since they hold or held such a disproportionate amount of power compared to their siblings.
      In fact the Void a realm of nothingness is where Daedric Princes are Birthed (it also explains their titles, as Sithis is "king" and the Princes would theoretically be next in line, if order of succession is a thing).
      Though all this birth of Gods is kind of weird and self contradicting since Meridia was supposedly once a Magna Ge and Mehrunes Dagon was supposedly CREATED by the Magna Ge, and Trinimac became a Daedric Prince.
      This suggests that Gods might not be able to die, but they can sure as hell be corrupted, and that the whole "purity" is kind of an illusion. Which makes a lot of sense given the fact that all these God beings live within the Universe (Aurbis) and/or the Void and said realities are only possible because of Padomay and Anu's conflict, hence outside of those two, no being or "thing" is truly wholly one thing, merely a composite of things.

    I have a theory!
    Akatosh is the dragon god of time, and Shor is the serpent god of un-time!
    Just shortly after his death, time became more linear. Every time the Numidium is activated, dragonbreaks happen. The dragonborn himself, ( if he’s a shezzarine ) could explain why he is such a counter of dragons ( aka the sons of Akatosh ). The Tribunal also could devide their their power to protect Morrowind from the dragonbreak. Maybe he was the one to give Alessia the “dragon blood”, it could explain why humans and elves hated each other, the “one” was Lorkhan, the dead god. The dwemer may be in their own “dwemerbreak” and caused a timeline shift like the Yokudans did, by using untime and went to a timeline where they are still et’Ada.
    Maybe they became the serpent constellation by escaping mundus through oblivion like the magna-ge, maybe the serpent is Lorkhan’s soul.
    This all seems plausible, but has some holes in it. Like, why would Akatosh be the one helping to defeat Mehrunes Dagon if the amulet is from Shor’s blood? Why would he be connected to the dragonborns if they don’t have his blood? Then again, he is the *trickster* god and could just appear like him and trick the mortals. For what? I don’t know, maybe launching his heart to the twin moons to revive maybe?

      The dragonborn is a counter to dragons because he is a dragon, an only dragons can absorb dragons.
      Also Lorkhan is the god of space

      The_Drop Bear
      I don’t remember reading that, prob. forgot. And dragons can’t absorb dragon souls. Otherwise, all dragons opposing to Alduin would be dead forever, Paarthurnaax is an example.
      Lorkhan didn’t invent space, it was always there. They lived in the Void, a timeless mass split in two areas called Anu and Padomai. In the middle and around them was a place ruled by none of the primary forces. Lorkhan is a serpent, a dragon-like creature, probably looking like an asian dragon.

    • @truerebel5467
      @truerebel5467 Před 6 lety +2

      Zakaria Sithis is the god of the void and the father of lorkhan. Dragons and the dragonborn are the only beings in the entire tes universe that can absorb the fallen (dragons/shards of time/Aka). Paarthurnaax was never slain by Alduin and even if he were Alduin is still considered unique amongst dragons and have the ability to resurrect the fallen. Bro, did you played the game?

    • @Felahliir
      @Felahliir Před 6 lety +3

      LogicxX PhantomXx
      I did, multiple times. But, Sithis is not a god of the Void, but an entity, he was the son of Anu or PSJJ like the elves call him, and existed after the void. The reason why Alduin is capable of doing that is because he was speaking, aka using Thu’um.
      The Thu’um is an unlimited power that alter the fabric of reality, especially coming from Alduin. He just gave them souls he made on the spot. Also he says tiid while reviving them, the word for time, probably making time go backwards and reviving them that way. But dragons don’t absorb dragon souls, they are immortal until the dragonborn eats their soul. That’s why the blades don’t use other dragons to hunt dragons, they can’t do that.

    • @truerebel5467
      @truerebel5467 Před 6 lety +2

      Zakaria Dragons can absorb dragon souls it's just not portrayed in the actual game (due to dragons being part of the same faction. Like how a stormcloak won't attack another stormcloak. Game mechanics). The grey beards clearly states this when you ask them about dragon. It's lore.
      Sithis is the god of the void, an aspect of space.
      I won't debate you on the thu'um because you're completely correct however alduin did not create new souls, he resurrected the fallen dragons.
      Example of this is when you go to kyne grove with delphine and fight the dragon that alduin resurrected. The dragon states how defiant mortals become since he "slept". A new soul would not know of the past. Dragons were sleep because there were no Dragonborn to absorb them and the only way that they can die is if they're absorbed by a dragon (which is rare. I assume dragons only absorb other dragons that they've personally slain and not those that were knocked to sleep by mortals).
      The Dovahkiin is literally a dragon wrapped in flesh and the reason for this is for him to have two natures, mortality (flesh) and immortality (dragon soul), a bridge. The reason he absorb every dragon he gaze upon is because of his mortality (The will to survive and grow). It's not such a big deal to dragons because they're already one with the Thu'um and already immortal unless slain by a dragon.
      I like your theory though. Would be badass if Lorkhan did turned out to be a serpent and actually turned out to be the true father of the dragonborn kind. Who knows, he is the Loki of this universe after all.

  • @cerulee
    @cerulee Před 6 lety +5

    Anybody else suspect that the Dragonborn is meant to be an incarnation of Lorkhan?
    I came to this conclusion when playing the Dragonborn DLC for Skyrim, and taking a close look at Miraak. The lore says that he did not try to defeat Alduin when the World-Eater first appeared in the Merethic Era and instead left the old Nord heroes to get asswhipped.
    This doesn't really make a lot of sense to me. Even if Miraak didn't care about anyone else, you'd think he would at least try to stop Alduin to protect his own existence.
    The only explanation I can think of is that his existence was never in danger from the World-Eater to being with. Maybe somehow he realized he was a god (through Hermaeus Mora, perhaps?) and just wanted to see what would happen if Alduin devoured everything.

    Was listening to a book about Tantra which is a mystical system of practice from India which is what some elements of Dunmer lore in Morrowind seem to be based on. The narrator said that one of the terms for god in the Tantric tradition was "the heart" not because it's like a physical organ or because the heart is the seat of emotions but because the heart is at the center and the core of all things. The supreme god is therefor the heart of the world. I was thinking about that and thinking about the heart of Nirn and thought I would share that thought with you. The audiobook I was listening to was Tantra Illuminated by Christopher D. Wallis.
