  • Rebuilding a drive shaft on an older Mercedes. Shown in this video is a driveshaft from a W202 C-class but the same advice will apply to most rear-wheel drive Mercedes. Having the driveshaft rebuilt, especially having the u-joint replaced, cured a vibration I had for a very long time.

Glad 2 see you still have w202. I have 250k miles on mine & it’s still drives like a dream. I’m gonna keep it till 2043 :D

Of course! I'm never selling this car. It just is less featured on the channel right now since the Jeep has a lot more wrong with it.

Very informative, well explained video and feedback on Meyle product through actual long term personal experience. Had no idea universal joints could be rebuilt. If my memory serves me right, the balancer discs are several hundred bucks from Mercedes Stealers. I have had a C200 (S202) for over ten years and it's never let me down, starts first time and I've never changed the spark plugs lol, but I think the propshaft centre bearing rubber has gone as it knocks on the transmission tunnel occasionally under load at low speed. Still drives smooth and quiet with 168,000 miles, amazing cars. Thanks for uploading, 👍😎

Yeah you can delete the driveshaft harmonic balancer. It's pure Mercedes over engineering. There's nothing connected to the driveshaft that can give harmonic oscillations like the combustion events acting on the crankshaft do.

Are both flex discs the same part? Or is the front one different from the rear one?

Unfortunately, they are not the same part.

Hey pat, nice video. Im still underway with my headgasket replacement (i barely started because im busy until july lol, computer science things as usual) but ive been doing some thinking and was contemplating whether I should change my timing chain or not. I know i know once it hasnt stretched it should last the life of the car, but personality i wanted to up the boost on my supercharger, and didnt want to hear destruction in my engine after a few months because of a snapped timing chain. The engine has 280k kms on it, i believe thats about the life of the chain there. Issue is id have to remove the entire front cover, pulley, waterpump etc to get to it, raise the engine with a nonexistent lift or nonexistent jack and still id have to cut the oil pump chain just to get the new chain on and then refit it. Very confusing and stessful process, besides cutting the old chain and adding new links to it, which im not exactly sure how that would work considering theres no master link.

When I did my head gasket at 220k the chain stretched to about 1/2 of its allowed amount (based on the timing difference). So I would say you don't need to change it just yet.

@@PatsCarGarage ah understood, did you have any cam sprocket wear? my exhaust cam sprocket has a bit of worn teeth, not sure if that could cause jumped timing

@@samurboi8007 I didn't have any wear on the sprocket no.

I replaced my headgasket, ported and polished the head, and redid the timing chain all at the same time (250k km). Mine had stretched a full 9 degrees and my chain guides were quite worn, so I'm glad I changed it. You can get a master link for the oil chain on McMaster Carr, just make sure to align it so that it doesn't snag or come loose. I can share the link if interested. My cam sprockets were fine, but make sure to replace the bolts for the exhaust sprocket, they are one time use only.

@@Emanmonster13 wow 9 degrees is quite a bit, im actually planning to port and polish my head, new guides and port the supercharger while everything is apart. So depending on how long is apart i might replace that chain as well, i dont have an impact gun though so id have to figure out the crank pulley situation. Send that link if you can though thanks!
