- When you think of some of the best classic rock songs, you’ve got to mention Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin'” and “Any Way You Want It.” The band achieved the height of its success when it was fronted by lead vocalist Steve Perry.
Perry’s voice is what set Journey apart from other bands at the time, as it's hard to imagine anyone else belting out the words to “Don’t Stop Believin'."
Perry went on to have a successful solo career in the '80s and '90s, but what has happened to the enigmatic singer-songwriter since his heyday? Here’s why you don’t hear about Journey’s Steve Perry anymore.

Band or no band , Steve Perry's voice made it what it was . Arguably one of the best rock singers ever .
Unarguably, one of the best singers ever! Of any genre!😉
Yes nodoubt
Exactly. A legendary voice. Now and forever! I grew up listening to his best all threw junior high and high school we were truly blessed looking back growing up in the 80’s! The best of times for sure !!!
Steve will always be the best front man in the history of Journey. That being said, Arnel is a worthy substitute and deserves the respect that STEVE gives him. It is a shame so many Steve Perry fans have abandoned their favorite band!
Exactly journey will never be the same Steve Perry was and will always be journey
Steve Perry was the one band member that couldn't be replaced. Anyone with a keen ear can hear when it's Perry doing vocals and when it's not. Steve Perry will always be one of the few truly great vocalists of times passed.
I saw Journey LAST NIGHT. The new guy is pretty great.
@@vikingmaiden5713 he's a trooper for carrying on the sound, arnel, thanks for taking the mic man,you rock
but he HAS been replaced. By a better singer, and he also plays the drums!
@@chrisbusch1970 😀😄😄...
@@chrisbusch1970 Castronovo can't even hit the angelic notes that Steve used to end Mother, Father with. Dean is great, but you are out of your damn mind to say he is better than Perry lol
Steve Perry’s voice ALWAYS gives me goosebumps.
that's EXACTLY what i was going to say.
Definitely!!!!
Me too
Steve Perry still makes my insides turn to jelly. Such a voice, such emotion conveyed, irreplaceable.
I don't care how old he thinks his voice is. . . I'd go to his concert anytime!!!!! STEVE we miss you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Call me when you go I 'll accompany you.
Agree with you 100 percent. Bands are never the same after the lead and or a Member goes.
@william bunn , that's why Led Zeppelin said no thanks to replacing John Bonham! In other words you are correct .
I agree it was great to see these bands in the day when they had the Original members. Good days at Sears early am waiting for the doors to open so we could get at the front of the line at the Ticketronn or Ticketmaster inside to get those DAMN tickets. LOL many fights from people trying to take cuts I tell you. Loved the 70's as a Teen growing up.

No one can ever sound like the original, that's what makes every person unique & rare! Steve Perry's voice is one of a kind😘
Seeing Steve Perry singing along with the crowd, to the stadium playing Don't Stop Believing, is one of the best things I have seen.
That was awesome
I love Journey and Open Arms is a very well known love song. Don't Stop Believing is a great song still. Love to Steve Perry and Journey!!!!
No one will replace Steve Perry in our hearts! He made that band. We miss and love you Steve
Steve's eventual replacement Arnel Pineda has an Awesome voice and it's great that he's so humble about his meteoric recognition and rise, plus Steve Perry's endorsement must have meant so much to him.
He’s such a kind gentle beautiful soul. Happiness comes from within not being famous.
I'm a black man.
Steve IS the man.
Kind soul/great singer/always has a smile.
Journey was a good band... I absolutely love Don't stop believing.. that's my motivation song...
Thanks Steve.
Got some experience with fame?
I don’t care if his voice sounds aged. He sang all of those wonderful songs first. It would be an absolute honor to hear him sing live.
His new band is just as good. Its the voice and lyrics that makes it.
After elvis. Then we want ingelbert humpadic, Tom Jones, sherly temple, etc...
We liked the looney tunes tunes before journey. Kermit the frog had a bigger hit and still does. I still can’t get over the ‘fork in the road’ joke.
Sure. It would unpolite, to say the least, not recognize all his talent just because time has passed. People have bad memória and manners even with an instrument like CZcams where you can watch all this masterpiece
His voice has NOT aged, screw whomever said that cuz nope!!
I lived in his hometown of Lemoore, CA and was lucky enough to meet him a few times. He was so gracious and kind. His voice is unparalleled and I would love to see him perform again.
Never got to meet him. But many of my friends from the Valley did. He was always nice to them they said. A real class act for sure. I lived not very far from Lemoore ,Ca. But I was not lucky enough to run into him. That would have been Awsome!
When I was 23 and attending AA in Studio City, I would see him at the 7am meeting every morning. He would always get my coffee for me. He was shy and sweet. Never talked a lot. Very kind and everyone treated him just like one of the group; no one fussed over him. I know he appreciated it.
No matter who will sing as Steve Perry, will never ever replace Steve Perry. Steve you are #1 in vocals......
I grew up in the 60s with all that great music but seriously Steve Perry had a voice that was from out of the universe... powerful , a range as wide as the ocean, and very melodic, what else can you say about him ? To me he was Journey ! A voice of a lifetime !
jjs490 hey dumb guy freddie mercury is the best singer with a powerfull range admit it
Steve Perry was legend!! Freddie was eh.....admit it!!

⛦ Steve's ego is his downfall. Like the Philippine guy way better
Run along haters.
If you don't like Steve, then why tf are you even here, morons.
Stop the hate pls they are good in their own way. Freddie was creative/artistic singer hes the showman. Steve with that range and flawless melody at the same time thst is really hard. Appreciate both
This man's vocals aged like a fine wine
Steve Perry is my favorite singer of all time.
His voice immediately gives me goosebumps as soon as I hear it.
Journey gave me a part of my heart that I had burried because of the way society was grooming us. Listening to Journey is so theraputic. My heart soars and my tears flow, it just happens. Thank you Steve and Journey.
Perry has a phenomenal voice and Journey hasn’t been the same without him. I consider myself lucky to have grown up in their hay day.
Like wise! The best! Go 80’s! The best of times!!!
Steve Perry is the most bad ass pop rock voice ever. Unreal! He has an amazing gift and has shared it so freely! Great heart & soul!!
Journey was O.K., but Steve Perry was exceptional. I grew up in 50’s when bands were backups to great singers, so I’ve always been partial to great singers (and there were many in the 50’s). However, from the 60’s on, for my money, the two greatest vocalists were Freddy Mercury and Steve Perry.
ME TOO!!!
Hard to argue...
Steve is one of a kind. Easily one of the best singers of all time.
I'd be honored if some Steve Perry/Journey fans would check out my acoustic piano & vocal covers of WHO'S CRYING NOW and AGAINST ALL ODDS by Phil Collins on my channel in tribute to the legends. Live acoustic with no autotune. I'm not going to tell you i sound anything like Steve - but then who does? Thanks and peace.
one of yes,but there are thousands of one of a kinds
He is one of the best Melodic Singers we ever have and No Damn Auto-tune during his years in journey. Glen Campbell and Frank Sinatra in their early years were supposed to have Perfect Pitch Voices and that is Rare. Glad Steve is Back.. RH DD
@Johnny Almeida ,no way.

Steve Perry will never be equalled. He is a legend in his own right.
Steve Perry is Journey! No one else can replace him and what he has done for this band! Rock on, Steve Perry!
No of it makes sense in 2020. Journey was known around the world before perry.
Kind of like a mini minor car. Like a good C grade music. Sanatana was still being played and journey wasn’t. Outside the USA of course.
The music business is about SELLING TO THE WORLD and journey couldn’t do that.
It doesn’t matter if the mini minor gets superseded cause it’s just a mini minor.
He had endless potential but capitalism couldn’t capitalise on it.
A famous WASTE OF TALENT.
The businessmen were too busy to realise his talent and the bands weren’t capable of displaying the product to the world. Everyone’s ego got in the way.
Nah, he was replaced.
what about arnel pineda ?
Steve Perry has always been my favorite singer of all time. When he left Journey so did I.
Chris Frazzelle. Exactly what I was going to put in here. There will never ever be another voice like his. Or, for that matter another voice like Freddie Mercury.
you are also right about Freddie Mercury! Wow not to many people had that much voice range. I miss him too!
I say the same thing all the time! :)
Chris Frazzelle. And, if you are really old like me, we can include Roy Orbison. I love to listen to them all and just revel in their incomparable voices.
he was the best tenor everrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.............
Steve Perry has a beautiful voice and soul. You can see and hear both. Was so happy to have been able to see Journey in concert with Mr. Perry singing. Thank you for allowing us to hear your gift. Be Blessed
I played pool with Steve Perry in Wichita KS one night. He was the nicest celebrity you could ever meet. God Bless You Steve, live long and prosper.

So glad that Steve is back!!! He still sounds amazing and what a beautiful man, inside and out.
Steve Perry is a humble man, refreshing these days.
NO one sounds like Steve Perry. He is one of a kind, and I love his voice.
As a kid I always thought Steve and the guitar player were far beyond the rest of the band...
As an adult I see my childhood folly and also think the new singer is doing a wonderful job
Much mad respect for all these rock icons who helped me make a lot of memories
There is NO journey without steve perry.
The man wanted a private life after giving most of it to RNR and touring the planet. Dude is 70 now leave him alone.
Age has nothing to do with it he is just sexy and on fire. Ssss 🔥
Martina Carrilo sexy ? So listen to his records. lol omg
Kevin Baker yes! Touring constantly takes a terrible toll on you. Hotels, hiding from fans eating fast food.
It’s tough
Kevin Baker Steve Perry finally put out a new solo album. You should check it out.
Kevin Baker: Poor guy. He’s been having health issues since the late 90s. He probably retired from touring
sad what a beautiful voice steve perry had. i love his songs from then, Forever.
I love the story a coworker told me at work about Steve Perry needing his HVAC system serviced. Upon entering his residence he noticed all the Gold and Platinum albums hung on the walls but had no clue that he was finalizing the service visit with the lead singer of Journey. I'm told that Steve lives near me but I still have not met him. It's really cool what different people you can run into in life.
His voice can never be duplicated, I agree Steve made the band period!
I saw Journey play Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto in 1982 on the "Escape" Tour. Steve Perry's voice live was incredible! His voice just soared like an Eagle, and he held those high notes forever! Steve was an energetic front man too; He ran across the stage, and up and down the stairs like a mountain goat. Journey was one of the very best sounding bands that I ever saw in concert, and I think I've seen over 100 different groups play live.
OMG....I was there downtown Toronto by the ML Gardens then....but did not have a ticket to the show unfortunately. I was 21. What month was that do you remember?
It is probably why his hip couldn't stand up to the trauma. Much the same as Prince. Who turned to medicine that eventually caused his demise. The brightest flames burn out the fastest. This is why Steve had to stop. He wanted to live.
Steve Perry will always be Journey and no one can replace him.
Steve Perry is a local boy with a soft soul and Huge voice! Thanks for great memories!!
Steve Perry is Journey! Amazing, amazing voice.
Steve Perry made Journey, and one of the best vocal singer off all time
l agree with you 100%
☹🤑😢
While I love love love Steve's amazing voice, and I agree will never be the same, come on guys, give this kid a break. If you know his story about living in a park in Manila in the Philippines, with the only thing holding him together was singing the song Don't Stop Believing, you got to give him credit for trying to step in Steve's shoes. Personally I think he's got a great voice... And while no one will ever replace Steve Perry this kid at least brings back great memories of the band I loved to go see while I lived in Silicon Valley... My home for my entire adult life. So many great concert venues, and now I am stuck here in Dallas. God I miss the Bay Area and all of the musical talent that was present all those years.
Who told you, the pride of the Philippines no other than Arnel Pineda.....
Louie Rivera
I hear from him every SF Giants game. He's at every game going crazy when the Giants play good. Runs up and down the isle he's in and high fives everyome. I got lucky a few times. And when they play his songs he sings with the fans. He's amazing and can sign better then 100% of all artists out today.
I love you Steve Perry! Your songs made memories of a lifetime. I was so lucky to grow up in the 80s. Class of 89
Love Steve Perry, he made the band Journey famous. The best vocalist there ever was!
yep after Elvis.
Yeah and he had some B grade hits with the kids. Every generation tries to rewrite history. If you disrespect the establishment, you’ll always end up with ‘nearly there’. These people were unwise and it shows all throughout their careers.
If you’re only talking to people your own age, you’re NOT learning anything.
@@marilynwillett804 After Freddie Mercury!

Steve is such a class act. Always loved his voice.
Definitely one of the all-time best vocalists in rock and roll.
My understanding was that Steve was very close to his mother. A loss like that is very difficult. Add in his own health issues it did not sound like the rest of the band was very sympathetic or supportive. I would feel like an outsider, too. And, I'm agreement that Journey is Steve Perry.
Very , very true. I grew up in Lemoore Ca. Class of 1981. Exactly 12 years after Steve graduated from the same High School. His family lived in a house on Banyan Street 18th Avenue and Hanford Armona Road. This is a guy who could have been anywhere in the world on New Year's Eve in the late 70s yet I walk into his cousin Mike and Katie's house and there he is. New Year's Eve middle of nowhere. . Stratford California...visiting with his cousin Mike.. not only is he Irreplaceable in his chosen profession very few could fill his shoes as a man. the entire Perry Family has my respect. Vince Norris.
That and his hip surgery. Jon Cain is a family friend. I know all about the split.
They screwed Steve big time.
I remember an American Top 40 broadcast where Casey Kasem mentioned that Perry had torn his vocal chords and had to stop singing and even speaking to let them heal and recover. And so he was going to be on hiatus. I always took it as the official explanation for why he eventually left the band. I mean if Kasem said it back in those days then it had to be gospel.
Absolutely

@Edward Harshaw,
Don Dokken had a decent voice, but he’s no Steve Perry, and he can’t sing now.
Rik Emmett was one of metal’s best vocalists. Geoff Tate was another. Rob Halford was, too.
Jon Bon Jovi called Steve “the voice.”
Dafyd Maddz,
Same here, and I loved Dokken (the band). Don doesn’t have Perry’s range. They sound nothing alike. I think that commenter needs his hearing checked.
Dafyd Maddz,
We must have been writing at the same time. “Same here” was regarding your reply to Harshaw. I was confused as well.
Thank you. I’ve noticed on other videos that we have similar taste in music. I “outgrew” Journey by high school, when I discovered Sabbath, Dio, Priest, etc., but still appreciate Perry’s vocal range.
Edward Harshaw DD is no Steve Perry.
Stayin’ Sane,
That guy’s either tripping, trolling, or deaf. DD never sounded like Perry, not even in his prime.
Steve Perry the greatest rock singer that ever lived. He made his best music and walked away on top! I mean seriously he was at the best in his life and just felt he'd never achieve anything higher....and he was absolutely correct! He did it the way it should be done....He already knew it was downhill from the point he walked away.....he'd just be chasing a shadow of himself...why go through the agony!
You're so right he is smart not to ruin his legacy he didn't even sing on their induction to rock & roll hall of fame
Your drunk. Freddie Mercury, and everyone else is tied for a distant second place.

Steve ‘THE VOICE’ Perry, the soaring vocals are just the greatest, purest, sweetest sound ever.
The music from my generation was the greatest and still endures.
My sister was head over heels in love with Steve Perry when we were younger... Probably still is, lol
Steve Perry has been sick for years! He had hips replaced when still young. His health has been terrible. Most beautiful voice rock and roll has ever heard.
Sarah Metzgar Why do you say Steve's been sick for ages? He's had some health issues, sure, just like anyone else does, but his health is relatively good considering his age. (He's 68, btw.) He had hip surgery (not "hipS") 20 years ago and a cancer scare a few years back (considering how many outdoor gigs we did back then and in the sun), plus some weight issues that were related to meds, but he's in fairly decent shape considering all that. Maybe you should watch him at the recent RRHOF from a few months ago. I noticed several physical changes for the better that you fans wouldn't notice. Stop making generalizations you found on some media site that claims things like "Obama is a Space Alien" or such.
KARELLEN OVERLORD I agree with your comments. Having grown up in Lodi and Manteca,Ca locals have felt a kinship to Steve and his family. However two things are critical to singing Rock and Roll songs well and that is leg strength and low weight. At age 68 it will be difficult to manage both. I am not challenging you, I just wish you and Steve and Lou Gramm good health.
He also went through a lot losing hies mother.
nunya beeswax you are RIGHT !
The voice remain the same with Arnel Pineda....what the hack with Steve Perry anyway!
Okay. Nice video. I just saw excerpts from VH-1 Behind the Music. Nothing new. Steve Perry will forever be one of (if not) the best voices of Rock. I miss that Journey period. The MTV videos, etc.
