I like that once defeated he doesn't cry or beg for mercy. He knows he is defeated and accept his fate. A true warrior.
He was dead from bad wine later that night.
In reality, many gladiators survived defeat if they were judged to have fought well and earned the favour of the crowd. This happened much more often than the gladiator being killed. They would simply raise their forefinger to ask for mercy. Crying or begging probably wouldn't have helped his cause.
Edit : I'm getting a lot of responses saying that gladiators were rarely killed because they were valuable. That's true. It doesn't invalidate my point however as their value was linked to their success\popularity. My initial response was strictly in relation to how gladiators faced defeat and the possibility of death

Joaquin truly excels at trying to keep calm but being incredibly angry on the inside. I loved how he played Commodus.

@@AtomicExtremophileI would say that he did better with Commodus, because he had more to do from the script.

No, that is a bullshit lie a historian made up. It was typical for them to die when the crowd said they died. Not when the Sponsor could not afford to pay for the games in the first place. A historian looked up prices, and noticed that you paid moree if the gladiator died versus if they lived through the match. This makes sense because the gladiator who is dead needs replaced. But the idea that they could not afford gladiators is wrong. In fact, the Twelve Caesars specifically mentions how Julius Caesar recycled gladiators once the crowd lost favor with them and they would be executed by their opponents. This is because the crowd, not the sponsor who hosted the game like the Emperor, usually were deciding who lived and died. Countless gladiators died, and other historians have even proven this with records, not Revisionist theories that get spouted to discredit Hollywood, and any History with Glory or Bloodshed involved, a rationalist Historians worst enemy.

Most fights were just done until someone was on the ground and gladiators were trained to aim for non lethal blows, training a gladiator was expensive after all, even the slave ones. The crowd would almost always chant micio (Mercy!). In the golden days of the empire gladiatorial fights were a wwe show sandwitched between some convoluted hunting shows inside the arena of exotic animals, and military excersices. The actual fights to the death: the executions of criminals, christians, etc, were done relatively quietly during break time, which was just throwing them unarmed against beasts or well equipped executioners. Watching an underfed prisoner get mauled by a tiger gets old fast so they weren't as popular.
@@bigmen0 dann this was interesting
@@bigmen0 thanks for the info, that was awesome to learn!

Nice to see how the the Joker looked in his prime time
Yah 😂😎
In the end, he seemed merciful in sparing the undefeated gladiator, however it was in direct defiance of Commodus, showing him as well as the people that he operated on his own terms, not falling for public pressure either. In the eyes of all, he seemed to challenge the legitimacy of the emperor himself at that very moment, a reason Commodus felt he had to fight him.
however Maximus die in the end of the movie so it didnt matter he die anyway
@@blob2092 even if Commodus just had him executed right then and there, his legitimacy would still have been openly challenged, and his popularity would have suffered further. Maximus was essentially setting himself up as a martyr if Commodus outright killed him, which he didn't for that very reason.
This movie didn’t do its proper research.=) “Thumbs Down” actually meant “Spare”.
@@CassieAngelica Thumbs down was referenced to mean death as the performance of the gladiator at their mercy was too poor to keep alive or if the crowd booed him enough into a frenzy hence the thumbs down for the sake of pleasing the crowd. That is historically how the thumbs down was used and depicted as in writing and in stone(It dates before Rome too since gladiator matches existed before the Roman Empire).
@@edfgamer7351 that’s technically true, but many writings suggest the exact opposite.

How to say "f**k you" without using any words. Gotta love that! Russell, what a star actor.
I recommend to anyone interested in this to learn more about gladiatorial combat. I see lots of people saying this, but just as many denying for some reason. Most fights were not to the death and if they were it was usually pre-planned and ticket prices were increased. Makes sense when you think how some gladiators had multiple losses on their record. Most trained and lived together as well, so killing each other wasn't on the top of the list. If they were to get injured though, which was likely, they would get the best medical care Rome had to offer. Slaves, and criminals actually had the right to buy their freedom back as well, with most who did returning back to the arena.
Pro wrestling with weapons.
@@l.c.7168 It's still real combat where you could easily get an injury severe enough to cripple your quality of life, or get an infection and die later.

Yeah, exactly. My history teachers told us that they were like today's football players for example

Just finished this for the first time. If I want to describe this movie in one word. That would be timeless.
The editing and cinematography is fantastic during this fight. Makes it feel like you’re in the pits fighting with Maximus.
3:04-3:32 Really shows how much Maximus respects Tigris ability as a gladiator and how cautious he is. Even with Tigris screaming in pain and blood poring through his face guard, Maximus keeps his distance before kicking him over. When he lifts his visor with the axe blade, he avoids bending over and potentially being stabbed by a hidden dagger. If Tigris had tried to grab the axe or Maximus by the ankle, Maximus is alert and quick enough to get away.
Hence the Viper
I don't think stabbing someone with a hidden dagger is very much in the spirit of a gladiator ^^ But yea it's good to be cautious
You do realise this is a movie right ??
@@taxibredanu3081 No shit it's a movie.
@@kd3045 now this reminds me of that fight in GoT where oberyn died because he didn't keep his distance from clegane, even tho he could've won that fight easily
Even the great Ridley Scott can’t achieve this level of film making again.
Once in a lifetime
Cause Hollywood loves CGI too much. If it was made today they would've made the whole coliseum computer generated
@@StonedCabbage ....The irony.
I don't disagree with you, first of all.
But a funny thing about this film is that the CGI Colosseum shots in this film where one of the reasons we have so much of it now. Gladiator broke ground on CGI scenery, specifically on the Rome scenes.
That's probably what they said after he made Alien though.
@@StonedCabbage Most of this was CGI. lol.
