- Germany has a worldwide reputation as a soccer nation.
This week on Meet the Germans, Rachel finds out how football came to Germany and how women's football has developed.
But it's not ALL about soccer... tune in for lots of summer and winter Olympic action, sports clubs and a look at East Germany's doping scandal.
Rachel moved from the UK to Germany in 2016. As a relative newcomer she casts a fresh eye over German clichés and shares her experiences of settling into German life.
Every two weeks she explores a new topic - from unusual bans to meaty cuisine or haunted castles. This week: sports in Germany.

Who are your German sporting heroes and why?
My sporting heroes: Toni Mang, motorcycle sports and Walter Röhrl and Sabine Schmitz, rally and race car drivers 😀
Never forgotten M. Schumacher
@@rallytube1715 a German legend...
The German Horse Riders 🏇. Dressage, Jumping, Military, Distanz- Reiten, Western... The only Sport you can practice in a relationship/partnership with another living, feeling being. The magic about an 600kg animal that cooperates with you and isn't just a sports equipment. That's "einzigartig".
If I think of Hans Günther Winkler with his horse"Halla", winning Olympic gold 🥇, him with a broken rip!
Bernhard Langer
I love every time a "Meet the Germans" show appears. Thank you, Rachel :)
So truuu....
Thanks for watching! :)
When I notice it, I always watch it immediately. Always wonderful! And I learn so much--thank you, Ms Stewart!
@@RachelStewart04 The German boxing had a break for some years, since world-champions like Henry Maske, Sven Ottke or the Klitschko brothers ended their boxer-careers. Now German box gyms are buidling up some young talents like Simon Zachhuber or Tom Sander slowly going their way to the top fights.
agreed
I feel like I know a bit about video production and presenting, and these DW Videos from Rachel are absolutely world class in both. I always learn interesting stuff and they are so engaging from start to finish. Keep it up!
Do a collab!
Oh thanks so much! I have actually been meaning to get in touch about a collab for Insta - message incoming :D
@@RachelStewart04 And here is closing the circle for me, who looks Feli from Germany and Understanding Trainstation with both of you as a guest.
German Motorsport racers are god damn legends. Between Michael Schumacher(who was until recently the untouchable GOAT) and Sebastian Vettel (3rd Greatest in History) they have 11 Formula 1 world titles! It's a shame that it wasnt mentioned in this video considering Michael is known as a sporting legend around the world and back
It ALWAYS gets overlooked -> *BEACHVOLLEYBALL*
The women's team did what no other team did in the history of the sport: won german, european, world championship, world tour and the olympics. In the same year.
Men's team also won the Olympics and Germany has always been in the top 10 teams, men and women.
We also host the finale of the world series here in Hamburg.
Beachvolleyball in my opinion wins the price for the most boring kind of sports..... Serve, return, out..... There should be at least four players on each side to make it more interesting.
It's not ''overlooked'', it's just downright boring to watch so people don't care about it.
I thought Formula 1 is also a sport. If it is, then Michael Schummacher and Sebastian Vettel are my personal favourite heroes.
How can they ignore German motorsports? Just these 2 drivers have 11, yes ELEVEN, F1 World Championships between them!!
But unfortunately, there are still people out there who think F1 isn't a sport and drivers aren't really athletes. It just means they don't know what they're talking about.
So fresh, so invigorating, so informative and interesting, great job, Rachel, thanks a lot!
Good times when there's a new MTG upload to be enjoyed. Thanks to all involved for making these refreshing videos. Must be a lot of work considering all the different locations, people interviewed and facts presented. (Also the stuff Rachel does each time.) Favorites of mine must be our racing driver like Schumacher, Bellof, Rosberg, Röhrl and Strietzel Stuck.
Haha yes we do pack a lot into our filming days 😆 but it's a lot of fun!
@@RachelStewart04 It really shows. Even as a native German I enjoy these videos a lot. Keep up the good work. 👍🏻
Thank you for your comments! 🙂
I just love this bite-size info/history by DW Euromaxx with my fave presenter, Rachel 😊
😄
I really like this format! Thanks Rachel, keep it going
It blows my mind that I didn't know the fact about the womens' soccer team winning the world cup!!! O.o Amazing! I wish the female team was much more prominent in national culture. Thank you for the video, Rachel & Team!
It‘s getting better. The Frauen Bundesliga seems to be gaining some momentum finally. At least some games are on TV.
Another great episode. Despite all history, I like when Germans feel proud of their country, especially in sports.
When the football team plays, you see many flags and people wearing the national colors and all. I would love to see that more often.
Yet another perfectly finished job from Rachel, and she ice-skates so smoothly.
Haha that's very kind, I felt really not smooth in comparison to the other people on the ice 😄 Our cameraman had a great time!
Pleased to hear from you. I watch every episode of yours, share it with my wife and friends and we all discuss and enjoy it. Thanks for the hard work and fun element.
@@KaushikDatye Thanks for watching Kaushik :)
Rachel, greetings from Leipzig and thank you once again. I went to Beverley Grammar School in East Yorkshire in the 1950s and spent my training as a dissident by getting out of sports. I could never the see the point of kicking a ball round a muddy field on a winter's afternoon.
Always love Rachel's videos. More please! 🙋♂️
Loved the episode, as always!
Are you planning on making a video on the different dialects AND accents here in Germany?
Would be fun to see your take on that!
Yes! And not just accents/dialects - we are hoping to explore the different regions of Germany soon, so watch this space 😁
@@RachelStewart04 nice!! That's exciting - can't wait to see what you guys come up with!
Franz Beckenbauer in Fusßball ! The first pro player I known when I was a kid.
My immediate sports memory involving Germany would be the crushing 7-1 victory over Brazil in the football world cup, held in Rio!
This channel is so creative , and the host is absolutely amazing , i wanted to learn more about 🇩🇪 this channel is the best so far
Thanks Charlie!
Great video! German migrants have also contributed to the development of sport abroad. Some of the most renowned athletes from my country, Chile, are German descendants: Marlene Ahrens, silver olympic medalist in 1956; Gert Weil (Pan American champion in the 80's) and Sebastian Keitel (World medalist and PanAmerican champion in the 90's).
I fully agree.
My german father was practiising biathlon in Belarus, but he only won an iron medal in 1942/43
I love Rugby big time - playing for the Berlin Bruisers - and Rugby has also a great tradition in Germany, sadl not as popular as football :-(
I have always wondered why cycling didnt became as huge in Germany as it did with its neighbours. I would love to see a German Grand Tour.
Hmm interesting, it's certainly quite a popular hobby!
It was quite popular in the 90s with Jan Ullrich and Erik Zabel being quite successful at the Tour de France but it lost a lot of popularity because of the doping scandals.
German Sporting heros definitely Philip Lahm. What a player.
About time for a new video!🙂
I'm glad I stumbled upon your videos. For some reason, I like amassing knowledge that I probably won't use, but hey! On the bright side, I'm going to learn a lot about Germany, since I'll probably binge watch your series.
Fantastic news. You'll have a lot of facts to share with friends 🤪
Dirk Nowitzki is my hero!
Thanks for this video
Interestingly the coach of the Indian athlete who won gold in Tokya Olympics in javelin throw is also a German!
Added an international angle to it with relevance to coaching in Germany!
Well, it's not worth the fuss about the one coach who won a medal in the javelin with India.
It's more worth it for the German biathlon coaches. More countries, more medals.
Speaking of biathlon, if you look at the last wind games in Beijing, then they should change the ammunition again. Instead of .22 lfB, use another small caliber .223/5.56x45 mm (STANAG 4172), which is probably not so easily blown away by the wind. You just have to adjust the permissible muzzle velocity slightly ;-). By a factor of 3, the thing should then fly reasonably straight at 50 meters, even in windy conditions.

BTW I was lazy, blame DeepL for the English ;-)
You are such a fresh air coming from Europe at this trying times with Ukraine and everything. ❤️ Franz Beckenbauer, Muller… so many great ⚽️⚽️⚽️ players I wanted to emulate as a kid. 😘❤️😘🖖
The moment I see Rachel & Meet the Germans clip, my first instinct is to like the video.. then watch it 😊
Another great episode from you Rachel.
Loved you shying away from the high dive 🤣🤣 and how did you manage to ice skate with the camera?
Hope you did not fall over doing it.
I suppose for my generation it would be Boris Becker,Stefi Graf and Michael Schumacher and probably Franz Klammer.
Liebe Gruß aus London und schon tag noch.
That was Rachel's usual experienced and entertaining insight into Germany's sporting activities. It's a pleasure every time.
Our pleasure!
Thanks Laura, good well.. . 👍
When you talk if German foitbalk, I remember Franz Beckenbauer of blessed memory, who died recently, Muller, Jurgen Klinsman and Miroslav Klose
I've paused to say that not bad for the way you moved the ball along the cones
Wunderbar!! You have the mannerisms of a western-European. I really enjoy your presentations Rachel.
I play Handel's and Bach's music too
Well, I somehow missed the mentioning of tennis - Steffi Graf, anybody? - and (formula 1) car racing, where Germany have a track record in, too. And don't forget about table tennis, ice hockey and in-door cycling...
Thomas Lange double Olympic gold medalist in the single scull (rowing), 1988 and 1992 and a bronze in 96.
Thanks for the video Rachel, I hope to see both Germany and England at the Women's World Cup next year the Frauen-Bundesliga is one of the top leagues of Europe.
Isn't Steffi Graf German? Also the lastest Olympic champion Alexander Zverev... I thought tennis is big in Germany.
There are certainly a lot of tennis fans/players here, but I was actually surprised that I don't see or hear much about it day-to-day!
Indeed, based on stats from the DOSB, the german umbrella mass sport federation, tennis ranks thrid after fottball & track&field in terms of members. Around 1.2 Million Germans are a member of a tennis club :)
No mention of F1 - Schumacher, Vettel, Rosberg and Mercedes in constructors
came in beczuse of the classic jersey.
Yuzuru Hanyu! It took me a long time to find an Olympic competitor that I like, but this guy was the first who caught my attention, since he is the first person I saw having actual fun doing the sport and loving it so much. He's so humble and is not skating for attention but because of passion. 😊
That's an eclectic header ;)
Good video, but one quite important sentence is missing. You don't need extra sport things in schools because sports clubs are offering such things also for children incl. competitions.
Agreed. School sports teams in addition to membership in a Sportverein would just be duplicative for many kids. But schools do have fairly comprehensive physical education, even without competition.
I grew up in Germany and I disagree. The clubs are not as open and if your parents are not members or involved, it is difficult for a kid t become part of a club. It would be better to have both options.
Great look into German sports. Thanks Rachel!
Rachel, where have you gone? We miss you
@RachelStewart04 netball is suspiciously absent from this video! Cheers for another great one.
I need to work a bit harder to make netball more widespread here first 😄
My sports hero was dutch Antonius "Toni" Geesink. He was the first non- Japanese world champion and gold medal winner in Judo.
Dear Ausländerbehörde, please award wonderful Rachel with dual citizenship! Neither DW nor Rachel will ever wish you anything bad despite your strange bureaucracy that I, as a German, will never understand.
Very interesting topic - however, zillions of joggers may feel a little bit underrepresented. Nonetheless - job very well done, as always. What I like best though, is the diversity of your interview partners, and yes: GER is a colorful nation - literally! Keep up your positivity!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
5:55 Timo Werner
Luther Mattius is my favorite German footballer
Very good video. Only thing really missing is Motorsport.
A recommendation for a future "Meet the Germans" video is to do one on the sport of Handball. I also would like 1 on how popular hockey (I'm using North American English so I mean ice hockey) is in Germany, but it sounds more intriguing to do one on Handball. Especially since Handball is, from what I know, a niche sport and not much heard of here in North America. I don't know much about the United Kingdom, but I am guessing it's the same situation in the "Anglophone world".
You have to differentiate between practising or watching a sport. When comparing handball and ice hockey both (basketball, too) attract similar numbers of fans at TV or live in the stadiums. When it comes to active practise, way more people play handball. Simple reason is that every small town or even village has an indoor facility that could be used for it - while ice scating facilities are really rare and concentrated on bigger cities. I personally do not know anyone who has played ice hockey, while many, many who have played handball.
Since I'm a massive handball fan, I have to say that I love the fact I can watch the German handball bundesliga in Denmark, where THW, SG Flensburghandewitt and Füchse Berlin are amazing teams to watch, and when we talk about German sport heroes I don't think so really. The only ones should be the handball referee couple Tobias Tönnies and Robert Schulze, they're an awesome couple on the pit
Nice, thanks for sharing! Handball is pretty cool.
Love Rachel and her vids
these video's help me in high school
Wonderful!
I'm a rather lazy guy, I usually do little more than the occasional running.
At the moment I'm in a fitness club. Fingers crossed how long I can keep it up :)
That's me also....... i sometimes feel like a sloth 🦥
Great video again, Rachel.
Tennis was a big thing in Germany too for decades. But younger people seem to lose interest on it. The prefer playstation and so called e-sport. 😂😂
Finally! Nifty football kit too - You had this for a while?
A classic from my husband, I found it in the attic!
@@RachelStewart04 The incredible things you find in the attic! Nice that he likes Bayern too - He from Munich then?
@@pranavhinduja1182 No but his uncle lives in Munich so that's his excuse :D
@@RachelStewart04 Haha - Don't blame him though - They're the best team around! You into football yourself? Any favourite English team?
Harry Koch. The most underrated Fußballer of all time. And of course Fritz Walter.
I remember the 1936 Berlin Olympics
Motorsport didn't even get a mention? The home of the car and arguably the best racing driver in history in the form of Micheal Schumacher and it wasn't even mentioned? C'mon
Because driving a car isn't sport. scnr
Sadly couldn't fit everything in. I also wonder if F1 is slightly falling out of mainstream popularity - what would you say? Schumacher did get a little mention in our car episode 😀
@@Schokelmei I'm afraid that's not the right answer and so you're out. I hope you enjoyed your time here and had fun playing but I'm afraid I have to take the money away and tell you that you are out, thanks for playing.
Join us next time when another contestant who has absolutely no idea what he's talking about tries to express an opinion. Good night.
@@RachelStewart04 I disagree, F1 is becoming increasing popular since netflix started their f1 documentary, Drive to Survive, in 2018. It has been difficult for germany to host a Grand Prix in recent years as both the Hochenheim and Nurburgring circuits struggle to make it financially viable but I think while F1 probably had a dip in popularity during the 2010s, after Liberty Media bought the rights to F1 in 2017, it's become a lot bigger than it ever was before. And even if we ignore F1, there's still a huge motorsport fanbase in Germany and some very big races, like the 24 hours of the Nurburgring. Which is definitely worth looking into. I just think its wrong to overlook the one sport that, I think at least, Germany has probably given more to tha anyone else.
@@RachelStewart04 The Mercedes F1 team has won 8 consecutive F1 world championships. Not even Ferrari has managed anything like that. The Mercedes F1 team are legends in the world of motorsports!
Germany has also excelled in the world of rally driving.
With the likes of Leon Draisaitl, Tim Stutzle, and Moritz Sieder, Germany is now hockey country
4:00, Jump, Rachel. 😅
No mention of German baseball in Bavaria... :(
In 1972 Olympic games, both German Nations did Doping. It was known from GDR. Therefore, West-Germany wouldn't be blame and did Doping as well.
Turnvater Jahn initiated Gym for everybody, because Military want's to make war and needs fit soldiers!
From which West-German person is known that he or she did doping back then?
Even my mother love german football team. She described them as lean, tall, and fast runner
The German Football team is epic!
Germany needs more Survivalrunning clubs! Like the one in Augsburg!
I like that you are wearing a vintage Bayern München Shirt, it must be from the 90's. Good old times when Munich was sponsored by Opel and not Qatar Airways! Although it might be a coincidence I tend to believe that you deliberately chose a shirt that doesn't have a questionable sponsor on it.
Well researched once more, thanks ! The English invented football and taught the rest the world which, ever since, has deprived English teams of winning major tournaments for quite a while.
The fact that English footballers tend to be rather respectful of German ones has also led to quite an impressive popularity of German teams in Scotland....
Hence, I strongly believe that English fans would not be amused if ever Germans came round to seriously start playing cricket. A distant threat, admittedly, but who knows.
That whistling in the intro almost gave me a heart attack, you guys can't do this to me Jesus
1:05 2:22 3:59 6:00
I‘am a Bit Fan of Meet the Germans, and this Episode was Good But Talking about Sports in Germany and Not Talking about Michael Schumacher, Sebastián Vettel and Motorsports is Bad. Most Iconig German Sport Hero of All Time
5:19 Sry Rachel, but Germany is not around the Top 10 in Summer Olympics. Germany is still 3rd overall, with quiet some margin, after only the much bigger countries USA and Russia/Sov.
Eventhough i have to admit, Germany kind of "cheated" by beeing able to send 2 teams (west/east) during some time. 🙂
But, yeah those "good" old days are gone... the (goverment) support of athletes has gone down. So in the long run germany will fall down more and more.
But still, that 3rd place will stay for a long time. Longer then we live probably.
Interesting, fun and informative. Rachel's presentation is great. Danke. ⚽️ 🏒 ⛸️ 🎿 🏀 🎾 🏊♀️ 👟
Glad you enjoyed it!
You forgot tennis!
Sporting Heroes for me are Miroslav Klose and Michael Schumacher.
Da muss aber einer an seinen Liegestützen arbeiten! Ich mach nur Spaß, tolles Video
I genuinely hate Liegestützen 😆
I used to play ping-pong among friends in my native Brazil. For fun, you know, having bottles of beer under the table, which we would sip on during the games (always king-of-the-hill style, short matches of up to 12 points), wearing casual clothes.
I tried getting into a Sportverein for Tischtennis here in Germany. Everybody is dressed up like they're in the Olympics or something, although they're mostly middle-aged people, they barely talk, there's no beer, and it's almost as if no fun is allowed, because they all take it so seriously. I just don't understand the appeal.
For casual ping pong like that look at tables in public parks or at swimming pools (don't know thats the word, i mean Freibad/Freibäder)
Alexander Zverev- Olympic gold medal holder
Besides Footballers my hero is Michael Schumacher.
here in west northern part of Germany, horse riding is extremely popular among girls
Boris Becker 🎾
Thomas Müller is my sporting hero❤️
Where did she get the Bayern shirt with Opel sponsorship?
I found it in the attic :D My husband was an avid Bayern fan once upon a time.

Actually Children got a lot of unmentioned Stuff.
Like Horse Riding, Athletics (leichathletik), dancing or Musicians (especially these in the Region with a lot of traditionell fests (schützenfeste))
Also Kinderturnen (children Gymnastics) are pretty big and heavy used
No mention of professional American football league in Deutschland…
Is there one?
Germany was host nation of the Winter Olympic Games 1936 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Sadly these Olympic Games were also exploit by the Nazi regime ...
German schools do general physical education, but they definitely leave organized team sports to the Sportvereine.
I have the Bayern Shirt that Rachel is wearing in the video
I must also add I do still enjoy the videos. I feel like I am getting an holistic and fuller idea of life in Germany. Thank you Rachel and your team.

What German cities have the best conditions for cross-country skiing? How long is the skiing season there?
😂 Look at a map. Where the Alps are. Probably better conditions in Austria or Swiss.
@@emilwandel dude, I did, but didn't find any cities in the Alps! Thought about Freiburg or Chemnitz.
When talking about cities, the answer is none. All winter sport ressorts are in rural areas in the mountains. And even there is no guarantee of having snow in winter. Best chances are in the Alps, followed by Black Forest and Harz. There is also a decent chance in Sauerland and the border to Czech Republic
