    It's only one scene, but it really feels like the players were too afraid to give their opinion and Flick was not ready to receive honest feedback. Then it's a vicious cycle: Flick doesn't want to really take in feedback and then players don't want to give feedback. An open dialogue requires respect from all sides.

      I think also the cameras in the room affected the players. You can argue that professionals should be used to cameras but not in places where they talk openly about tactics and performances. This is why I respect Klopp and the Liverpool dressing room so much, the fact we know NOTHING about those conversations is a huge factor to building real team chemistry and open communication. I feel players are more likely to not open up when they know they are being watched/recorded. This is known as the Hawthorne effect. As much as it is fun to see this side of football, it will never be 100% genuine which is why I am not a fan of cameras in the dressing room. Klopp has a rule of absolutely no cameras in the dressing room/team meetings which makes him a more respectable, approachable coach.

    The problem here is that Hansi has not adapted to modern football in terms of soft skills. This is evident that only the senior players are engaging him constructively and the younger players are saying nothing. If he could’ve found a different mechanism to get engagement out of the rest of the squad it would’ve been different. There were only 5 players in that squad that were actually present. The rest were just on a football holiday in Qatar 🇶🇦 which is evident throughout the series.

    • @opreva
      @opreva Před 2 měsíci +17

      Or maybe they are not engaging because they are, young? I mean, speaking to the group requires a lot of confidence and, maybe more than this, experience, which is exactly what they are lacking in the early stages of their careers. I think this is valid for all professions, not only football. I have never played football professionally, but I can't see young players speaking their minds that loud in any team. For instance, I doubt that Camavinga and Tchouameni are constantly contributing to the Real Madrid's football idea. Even though they are incredibly good for their ages, this is something that only guys such as Kroos and Modric might be leading there, because they are senior players and also have been wearing that shirt for a decade or more. This is important. Germany has a good team, but it's not like WC2014, we have to bear that in mind.

      @@opreva totally agree with everything you said. I’d just like to add that at Madrid the core spine of that UCL dominating team from ‘14-‘17 is still there so all the youths you mentioned can afford to say nothing. In this case all I’m saying is that Hansi is not adapting his style to cater for the fact you’re raising which is that a large part of the squad are still young. It’s pretty much the same thing what made Bayern implode if you watch their All or Nothing documentary when Hansi was in charge.

    Kimmich providing what the coach asked for, Hansi couldn't have complained after that. All the talks of tactics nowadays but shows how essential basic human skill such as communication is, and how it can motivate the players to have more conviction in their application. The players have the right to feel however they feel, and while they still need to be professionals, it's natural that they cannot give their all if they don't believe. Mind you, the coach could still be correct, but it's about convincing the players without forcing them to. Not an easy job certainly.

      It’s like taking care of or raising a child. What’s better, simply giving the child what they want, or have them work for it? In school, do you learn better when you figure out your assignment on your own, or when you copy someone else’s homework? Or even just getting the answer from the teacher without going through the problem. What provides more experience and strength, being a rich child who always gets what they want, or working for the money you spend? Flick said it in this video himself, he CAN just tell the players what he wants from them, but it’s better for the players themselves to figure out what they’re doing wrong and what they should be doing instead. They build more character that way. Of course by match time, Flick will have gotten his tactics through to the players heads, regardless of if they could have figured them out themselves.
