Everyone: How are they going to beat him? Protagonism? Miracles?
Netero: Uranium 235
😂😂
The King's ability was mentioned when he first took over the palace. He gets stronger when he eats Nen-users.
Point of the 'low budget and small dictator' comment is that Meruem was talking up how he'd the pinnacle of his entire race's efforts but all Netero needed to bring is piece of human technology that isn't even state of the art or used by a world power.
And still, no weapon would've been able to stop him if he reached his next level and survived. Meruem had a infinite ability to improve.
@@cheke184 No, a simple nuke would still kill him. No matter how strong meruem would be, the poison of the nuke still killed him. I think the point being made is that the collective will always win out in the end, even netero as strong as he was has no power next to the people with their hand on the bombswitches.
@@prodesu8607 Yeah, thats fair
Shoulda waited for the next episode, prettty sure it explains this.
Yea, and even if the little rose did not work, based on everything that the narrated says, it is inferred that there are much and more powerful bombs than this one.@@prodesu8607
Even though it's a different kind of battle, this fight just put into perspective for me how crazy what Komugi was doing with the game and the fact that the king could never reach her.
That also proves that there are humans that can win a fight against King, King could not beat her cause she used nen just for the game, so probably some fighting oriented hunters could win against king
@@tanvirhasanshuvo2968 I really don't think so. Netero was once the strongest Nen user, and what he displayed is FAR above everyone we've seen so far (even in the manga). I really can't see anyone being able to 1v1 Meruem
@@tanvirhasanshuvo2968 Well only through abilities only probably. But in raw power none. Maybe some from a specific place you know if you read the manga.
Regardless, I don't think that's what the point of the meaning for Komugi to beating him means.
The meaning is no matter how good you are at something, there would always be other "freaks" of nature that have bested you, no matter how strong you think you are, in the end you mean nothing, however, you also mean a lot for a lot of people. Which is the friendship/romance between Komugi and Meruem.

“You had me in checkmate from the start” is one of the HARDEST lines ever
“You understand nothing of humanities infinite potential for evolution!” Goes harder
@@kenanOWNah, the other line goes harder
nah@@celinho68
Nah
@@kenanOW I prefer the other translation regarding Humanities infinite malice instead
At the end netero's words are important, he said something about not being alone and that the king shouldn't underestimate the human's ability for evolution/malice with the nuke being used for war and dictators it was an evolution weapon but also used for horrible things so at the end us humans also are not so good
I think the malice vs evolution thing is because people think "Malice" sounds cooler. The kanji for both words were written in the manga and the Japanese line in the anime that was chosen was "shinka" which is for evolution.
Netero is responding to meruem. To two points specifically.
The first was the king saying that netero is the pinnacle of what a human can achieve. But that he himself is the result of his entire ant species evolution.
The second was that neteros lone fight won't be in vain, since the king will spare some humans due to the respect he has for netero.
So neteros response was that he is not alone, and that meruem knows nothing of human evolution if he thinks that netero is the peak of what a human can do. Thus the depth of a cheap nuclear bomb beating the strongest ant.
It's not about it sounding cooler than "evolution". What is cool is that Togashi specifically choosed this ambiguous kanji that mean both for a reason
The bomb is supposed to represent both things
@@xaropante exactly. the imagery of netero highlights that perfectly.
hes not portrayed as the good in the world or of humanity. he may be sacrificing himself for others but he does so using a method that has indiscriminately but intentionally vaporized and poisoned millions of people. much more so than the amount of deaths that have been caused by the two nuclear bombs used in our world. thats where the malice comes from. humans are capable of so much evil and thats whats used to save them here. in every other situation that they were used, all that they did was cause suffering for the benefit of dictators. their purpose being for cruelty and greeds sake.
@@xaropante Yeah, the ambiguity certainly was intentional from Togashi.
No it’s not about sounding cooler😭 the manga and anime literally says in kanji “malice”, hiragana/voice “evolution”
Malice sounds edgy and very black and white theme. It's up to the nose, and it only comes from ridiculous teenagers who say hUmAnS ArE eViL. Not understanding that unfortunately this is just life. Life is grey, it's not black and white with malice.
Love the timing of releasing this episode at the same week as a JJK episode that references this fight.
I thought the same, I'm assuming it's about the praying from the heart/soul being referenced.
The facial expressions of Netero’s closing the wound on leg, was priceless😅😅. I agree Miss Morgan, the imagery this episode had some visceral and otherworldly imagery. These last episodes have been hitting hard, and there still more to cone.
I’m sure it’s been mentioned but Netero lost the same arm and leg that he didn’t use when playing the game with Gon. He always gave himself that handicap and because of that he didn’t guard those parts of his body as well in a real fight
100% his prime ego talking right there
Oh, I didn't know **always** gave himself that handicap
Yes, Netero chose the location.
The strength gap between the The king and his royal guards vs everyone else is so crazy lol
Imagine Netero dying of a heart attack in the middle of a city 😂😂
Imagine dragons
The heart is not bc of the rose, its bc netero is grateful, he said it himself last episode
I think Lady Samantha right on Netero’s sacrifice. I think it stems from the fact that the old man had live a long eventful life than most, so if anybody had to offer their life to defeat the king, it had to be him. Plus like Parker mentioned, Netero was the only one strong enough to face the King. It had to be him.
If you watch the start of the arc, there is a scene where he's taking a call ordering him to deal with the situation. It reveals how despite his strength, Netero and the hunter association are still a small organization compared in the scale of the world and the only reason the job was given to them was because of political reasons. NGL is like North Korea and will refuse other countries help so only a neutral organization can go in. The hunter association are basically the United Nations.
15:40 Fun fact: Some translations use "Humanities infinite potential for malice" or "...potential for malice and evolution" here. I'm not sure how accurate that is in terms of being a translation, but I find it's a very fitting statement. Humanity's potential for evolution is near endless, but so is our potential for malice, which is shown for example by the weapons we create.
Fun fact: I've been watching this anime since before you were born
@@leonr1985 Yeah lad, that's not possible.
It is, cause hunter is a 90's anime and you sound like you're just 16 the way you talk@@mrcx6142
both work bc the kanji used in the manga means both, tho the actual spoken word in the anime translates to evolution
@@jiv3o275 Cheers for the input!
Wow, Parker with a Dad joke? Good job 👍 ❤ RIP Netero❤
Usually when they show a skull like that it’s to show the viewer the type of aura some one is letting out. It was visual representation of the danger and confidence that neteros aura was giving out.
Same thing happened with killua and rammot,
Netero lost the battle but not the war, he was the great wall where if he fell everyone would fall with him, in fact later they will see that practically he alone saved the majority of humanity, a legend, the most powerful nen user Isaac Netero!!
Meruem is definitely one of the best written characters ever

This fight was surprisingly so good for me personally because when I had first seen it I was confused by The King saying "You had me in Checkmate from The Start" I was like How?? But after watching it the 2nd or 3rd time I realized that Netero pulled a 200 IQ strat 😂😂 In a previous episode he had showed his aura to the Colt back home and asked how it matches up to the King and He was told that it still might not be enough, so he knew that either the King would kill him or he'd have to sacrifice himself to kill the king. So in this fight, To Prevent the king from attacking vital parts, he said that he knows his name basically saying, I know something that you don't and if you kill me you'll never know, Otherwise the king would've probably gone for his head or something So when the king took out his leg and arm, he only needs one arm to activate the bomb. it was a Genius Plan!😂😂😂😂
He didn't need the arm to activate the bomb, the doctor said the bomb would activate if his heart stopped beating, so killing him in any way would detonate it.
@@davyespectador Correct I forgot to add that, he wanted to see if he could take down the king first, The bomb was a last resort, otherwise there would be no point in him putting up a fight, he would've just let the king execute him from the start. At least that's how I saw it
@@Paulyy9 Netero's entire life goal was fighting an invincible opponent, one that could not be defeated. So yeah he wanted to fight Meruem.
Who wouldve thought a fight between some Grandpa and Donatello would be so iconic
You're probably gonna get this comment a lot but in the manga Netero says, "You know nothing about humans infinite potential for malice". He said malice instead of evolution, which makes more sense with the skull and upcoming seen next episode.
He said evolution. It was written in a way that it could be read as malice. You can do that when writing in Japanese. Happens with attack moves all the time.
No, he didn't. He said both with double meaning for evolution/malice using kanji and furigana to convey that humans evolved to the top of the food chain through the use of malicious , destructive weapons like nuclear bombs. Since this meaning can't be easily conveyed in translation, "evolution" makes more sense particularly when compared to Mereum claiming the Ants have evolved to be greater than humans and will therefore dominate them. Netero clearly disputes that notion, even condescendingly looking down on the "Ant King," and you can infer the malice from his face, so evolution is ultimately the best choice to convey that double meaning.
"Malice" makes no sense. The narrator himself, during the reveal that the ngl smuggled guns and drugs, says "the ants who are usually aggressive have now reproduced using evil humans"
Then, when pitou attacks, in the anime pitous aura reads "malice"
That same aura made killua believe pitous malicious aura was worse than illumi and hisoka, two of the most malicious characters in the show.
Then poufs arua was so malicious that just looking at it broke knov. Knov says "im not afraid of death. But i am afraid of the cruel methods they would use to extract information."
The ants are literally half human. How could they not know of human malice?
@@solodolosolomon Didn't say they didn't know malice, I said "Humanities infinite potential for malice"
@@Windmill360 I disagree, considering the next scene from the very next episode.
I feel like there's a significance to this moment in the story, that takes so long to get the full context for, that most viewers are likely to get distracted from it and not piece it all together, by the time they get to that point.
“You understand nothing of humanities infinite potential for evolution” is one of the coldest lines ever
Hands down, one of the top 5 best episode in anime history.
Sam predicted the Nuke at the end.
EP 81 around 16 minutes in.
It should also be noted that Netero does not say "the potential for human evolution", but rather he says "the potential for evil" that humans have in the manga.
Never underestimate..... old anime characters gadammit! 😂. One of the most epic episode in anime.
(7:45 - 7:50) The ❤represents gratitude. Netero is kinda in the same boat as "One Punch Man" where he has no competition as the STRONGEST Nen user. Most fighters he would fight would either bow down to him knowing how strong he was or Netero would beat them with medium to minimal effort.
So when Netero heard how STRONG the King was from Colt ... he got really excited that there was a challenger that had a more powerful Nen aura then HE did. So when you see Netero putting the Heart❤hand gesture up while he is fighting Meruem... it's because he is grateful to have FINALLY met a Nen user that he can FINALLY fight using his FULL POWER.
Out of all the possibilities the king calculated, he never thought the enemy would bring a nuke.
The imagery in this episode is just so good
The king was talking about setting up the “Hunter Hunger Games”. Special zone, selected sacrifices
So, slight difference in Netero's last words. In the the anime he's talking about "humanity's infinite potential for evolution", but I like the manga version even more, where he says "you know nothing of the bottomless malice within the human heart". I think that shows off better how humans can make something like the nuke, our potential for "bottomless malice", sadly 😔
During the hunter exam, Gon and Killua played a ball game with Netero on the plane. Netero only used one hand and one leg.
It was a foreshadow of this episode!
The most mean "you didnt win" in anime from the guy that seamed one of the nicest characters. its a great scene
How cool do you have to be to spin out of an attack and then seamlessly rotate into a pensive sitting position?
i think the last part is a fun poke at diego, the dictator based on you know who from you know where. he used those bombs as well, he was more powerful than the ant king in a sense, in a time, and in a proper situation.
La calabera detrás de Netero representa a la humanidad . Lo mismo pasa cuando dice "no estoy sólo", se refiere a que siguen otros humanos, y que la humanidad no tiene limites en la evolución
Don't underestimate the resolve of human race to annihilate living things.
the ant king becoming a human, and g9on becoming a monster. so ironic, shout out togashi

Yeah i remember when i watched it back in the day it was malice not evolution. Not sure why they changed that
@@BellGrattz different versions, some use evolution & some use malice
Evolution makes way more sense, but okay.
It's very interesting to see people's reactions to Meruem's speech. "I will allow a limited number of humans to live in a special zone. The numbers of humans who will be food will be reevaluated," but what we humans do to other species to feed ourselves is exactly the same.
We control the entire life of certain species and their reproduction, and what right do we have to do that? None, but we do it anyway. This shows a different perspective on Meruem's speech. In the end, he wasn't talking nonsense.
The gang seem to be a little bit off this episode and maybe the last couple - especially Sam. I hope they are ok and not getting burnt out
I think they had to speedwatch this since they were moving and were gonna be separated

Still the lamest death in HxH. I like what happens after but the cause meh
I don't understand what made the king say he's impressed, he was just born and didn't have to work for anything and still he is many times stronger, I think thats just a case of tell dont show, we see the king dominate the fight like he's killing a bug but still says he has new found respect, dumb fking show.
Because he wasn't "just" born. He's been around for at least a month (couple of months) and encountered a few humans at this point. Not only that but as he's born he believes he's the pinnacle in any dimension, including speed. So to see an individual from a "cattle pig" species outspeed him would impress him.
This is incredibly easy to understand.
You absolute buffoon he is smarter than you and has already seen another human beat him at something which is Komugi. And here too we see Netero who beats the King when it comes to speed, making him acknowledge the effort he has put. Only if you had some braincells to process something so basic.
what do you mean you don't understand? He couldn't even land a hit on netero at that time; he admired him simply because netero surpassed him at a certain aspect--the speed of netero's technique. I don't get why this even needs an explanation..
@@lostboy3542because this guy is dumb
I feel like this could come both from a place of "being so proud of himself that if this man is not dead after 5 minutes, he is just amazing" or just comparing with his royal guards.
