      Meruem felt fear, it is not because he never expected someone to blow up the Gungi board.
      It is because he thought he was the one manipulating the game but no.
      Netero was the one manipulating the situation from outside of the game.
      When Netero told the name, the game was already over because telling his name means Netero's defeat. I'm lost.
      Gungi board is already past tense in this moment.
      Netero said "I'm not alone"
      The fight was between us, You and Me.
      BUT what going to happen now is the fight between human and ants.
      Do you know what Netero really wanted to say ?
      I am lost and telling you your name but it doesn't mean human's lost.
      Here is a gift. THIS IS FROM HUMAN.
      If it is possible human kill Meruem which means human can kill other ants.
      But Killing Netero doesn't mean Ant's victory.
      So I don't think this line should have been on the show because this line didn't get the right point.
      It was actually more than the Gungi board.
      That is why Meruem felt fear.
      And you know, there was a human who flipped the board on previously episode.
      So Meruem can expect that.

    Okay I'll elaborate:
    - Netero's remaining limbs were the ones he did not use when playing ball with Killua and Gon in the HE arc;
    - When Netero previously said: "I'm not sure I can complete this mission without sacrifices", he probably was talking about himself;
    - Meruem fought "valiantly", Netero resorted to a "trick";
    - Yes, technology defeated Meruem. That always takes me back to the good old Dragon Ball days, when the army attacked Cell before the Cell Game but were wiped out. In HxH, a Nen attack is not necessarily stronger than a bazooka (Uvogin said that the super-bazooka he tanked "stung", and he was a master Enhancer);
    - The kanji for "evolution" also translates to "malice" (EDIT: actually, it doesn't. As pointed out in the replies, there is a habit of pointing out different ways of reading a phrase. This phrase was "humans' bottomless malice", with "evolution" as the alternate meaning). Chimera Ants will never evolve as much as humans (thanks to our individuality), and they'll never be as evil as us. The nuke is literally the most evil thing ever created by mankind. Netero does tell he and Meruem are going to Hell, so he knows to be an evil man;
    - Netero is down for a good fight, that's why he kept the bomb as a last resort;
    - Mickey freakin' called the nuke like 50 episodes ago lol.

I like how Mereum views human individuality as a weakness and the eusociality of the ants as a strength, but Netero shows that human individuality is also a strength bc that individuality caused constant competition amongst ourselves leading to us developing terrible weapons such as the nuclear bomb, so while Netero shows it as a strength it is also a weakness in the sense that it has caused untold suffering and destruction, on such a scale that the Chimera Ants haven’t even begun to approach yet. Netero is the most interesting character in this entire series. He is a man who lives for battle. He has much less care for human life than normal people, and can be very sadistic at times. Violence is his life’s purpose. Yet at the same time, he can be very kind, joking, and fun. And grim, and all different kinds of emotions. That is why he is the perfect representation of humanity. He was selected to represent humanity in their possible last moments. The line, “You understand nothing of humanity’s endless potential for malice.” Comes as the final words spoken in a battle that didn’t need to happen. Just like many times in history before, the battle was not necessary. They could’ve solved it through words, just as Meruem suggested. But they fought anyway. And the final act in that amazing, incredible battle, was the worst invention in human history. Nukes. The man who represented humanity had to resort to nuclear bombs to win. He sacrificed himself, “for the colony.” Because that’s the thing. The whole fight, Meruem was the more human character. Its especially shown in the nuke, because that is a very clear parallel to the bombing of hiroshima and nagasaki during ww2. The unnecessary loss of life in both. Jeez man, hunter x hunter is incredible.

    Regarding Netero's attack being the strongest move a human can muster is debatable. remember guys, you're forgetting that Nen is limitless, and Netero is a prime example of a human being who reached his peak regarding Nen under traditional circumstances. However, what if the individual Nen evolution isn't traditional, you're forgetting that there Nen can follow a condition system which immediately changes the rules of the game. The deadlier the condition that the individual sets, the stronger the Nen ability becomes. Kurapika and Chororo are prime examples. Nen in its traditional form follows the force with its rules while with conditions it follows the dark side of the force which can also be way stronger than the traditional ways.

    What's also interesting is that Netero probably had that bomb implanted for just anybody who was capable of defeating him in battle and not just the King. Netero was so prideful and arrogant that he couldn't let someone stronger than him live while he perished and it was meant to take out anyone strong enough to take down the strongest man in the world as they'd be too dangerous to be left alive.

    This fight came down to a difference in view on what "evolution" is. Meruem referred to a biological/physical evolution, whereas Netero referred to a technological evolution. The difference between the ants and the humans is that the humans have always dealt with being weak physically, and have invented ways around their fragile exterior, whereas the ants were always biologically superior to species around them, so they never had the need to develop anything resembling weapons, let alone a bomb.

    Netero had a simple point. No matter how much these creatures evolved biologically, they could never hope to match humanity's bottomless malice and technologically progression. There's plenty of cruelty that humans are capable of. The ants, while more powerful, were not inherently cruel. The species focused on hive mind and a simplistic mindset, combined with monstrous power. Humans are something else altogether, proven by everything wrong in the world today, with so many people still wilfully indulging in selfishness, greed and ignorance.

    The big point was Netero thinking was right from the beginning of this fight was his knowledge of the bomb and Human race.
    Meruem meant what he said, and he may have wreck havoc in order to create his equality dream world. But Netero knew. He knew that strenght, training, potential, all of that is inferior to the infinite potential of the Human Race and its potential to evolve, to destroy.
    Meruem would never have conquered mankind, because mankind would have nuked the entire know world before letting that happen. And Netero knew it. He had to stop Meruem, because that was the only way to protect Humanity, not from the ant, but from itself.
