As much as seasons 4 - 8 are jam packed with masterpieces, sometimes you have to go back and appreciate seasons 2 - 3 with their more down to earth and quiet and human moments.
Season 9 also had a lot of masterpieces too in my opinion. Like SpongeBob, the quality of the early Simpsons episodes were of another level compared to the crap we now have.
I really do appreciate these kinds of moments of poignant emotion and low-key comedy. Homer spending his last moments trying to find some solace in the holy book of his faith while skipping over the bits that are just lengthy descriptions of random genealogies is the perfect blend of tragicomedy...
I'm surprised that literally no one has ever pointed this out from what I've been able to find, but this is not actually the Christian Bible being read, but the Tanakh. You'll notice that the tape ends at Malachi, and never goes into the New Testament. Nor is it explicitly referred to as the Bible at all, but rather by the colloquial phrase "The Good Book". This is probably because the episode was written by a Jewish person, Nell Scovell. Incidentally, Larry King was also Jewish.
Yes it's the Old Testament on tape. Someone else pointed out that Homer picked up the tape from the right hand side instead of the left. Well, the Jews read from right to left and the Tanakh is laid out like this also. The 'Christian' Bible is no different for Messianic Jews, they include the New Testament also.
It's strange to watch these hilarious comedic snapshots of a show from when I was a kid, presently slipping into a kind of cultural touchstone, into lore.
There was this genuine feeling of pain on Marge's voice when she's searching for Homer. Like it was cracking and panic. "Homer?!" It almost got me when I first watched this episode.
You know, a lot of people really talk smack about the recent seasons, but when you really think about what they have to live up to I mean I wouldn't even know where to begin. The first like eight seasons of The Simpsons were filled with such brilliant writing and drama that pretty much all that's left is to write goofball comedy. Look at Homer here. Knowing he will die he spends his final day with his loved ones, then tries to find peace before the end in scripture. This one episode shows more character and emotion than most of what is on TV these days.

@@kgk4782That's a lot easier to say from a distance, though. There's no singular moment where the show suddenly reinvented itself from the ground up into the state it's in now. It's like the Ship of Theseus, changing a few planks at a time. Even when showrunners change, you get episodes written by people who've been there for years who might not realize in the moment that their best jokes are behind them, or that the audience for season 12 won't click with a bit they wrote for a season 11 episode that got bumped back, or any of a bunch of reasons why an episode that sounded good in the writers' room won't even be remembered a decade after it airs. If every show ended as soon as the people working on it questioned whether it could be as good as what came before, pop culture would have been very different.

Funny to have Larry King, a massive atheist read The Good Book.
I've never thought of that lol
Probably because I never knew his religious beliefs
He is Jewish.
Kind of like how Rev. Lovejoy is an impression of Carl Sagan. XD

The san antonio spurs in fact did not win it all that year. It was 1991 and Michael Jordan's Bulls won and they continued winning until 1993
*Why am I learning this just now?*
The Spurs had the 2nd best record in the West and got upset in the first round.
@@Evan8787 yeah and they never did win until Tim Duncan came
You can’t convince me that had David Robinson been around in the current era he would not be playing a similar style to Giannis
The audiobook might be older than that.
Some classic Simpsonswave moments have been set to this scene.
Rest in peace, Larry King. A very fitting tribute to him

Damnit Abraham. Why did he write about how many kids he had?
Lolll, I feel like the most "holiest" of Christians skip the entire genealogy parts. Shoot I know I do, not gonna lie 😂😂😂😂
It just goes on and on and on and I'm never gonna remember these names.
I mean unless you’re really, really devout or a biblical scholar none of those names really matter to most people.
