Nah, Season 2 was already the source of many of their classics. The Simpsons knew from the start that it wanted to be a cynical, satirical lampoon of everytown, USA with some surrealist and sentimental elements. Really it was already starting to lose itself and usher in its new age by season 5 with episodes like Homer Goes to College and Cape Feare where, yeah, the show was still funny, but it started being whole episodes of machine gun style gags spraying all over the place rather than targeted, organic humor that knew what it was trying to hit.
