- Alan Blair visits his good friend and top angler, Des Taylor who guides him on the River Severn. Both Des and Alan have a great day out using similar tackle and tactics to their usual carp fishing approach, instead with a few tweaks to catch barbel, which are a great target for those carp anglers wanting to try something a little different.

I have only ever had one Barbel it gave me a fantastic fight I was using a 10ft avon rod with a shimano 1000 reel on 6lb mono, when I finally landed this beauty of a fish it weigh in at 4 1/4 lb and its still for me the best fish I have ever landed. Not a large fish by any means but what a fishing moment it made my day and it is yet to be bested.
It’s always good to see mainly carp anglers going after other fish.
It shows that you guys can do more than just chase carp. 👍🏼

@@bbpoisonn the vast majority of uk anglers fish for fun and care too much about the fish they catch to ever cause any harm to them. Learn to appreciate nature and how beautiful it really is.

Lee osborne Try the carp cast website fella. they were doing 10k with pop ups and delivery for £79.99. It's the only place I know of that you can buy it before its release next May.

I noticed that Des's fish number 4 looked as though it had managed to escape an Otter at some point.
Notice Des is keeping his voice down, A river is different to commercials where they here a lot of noise, on a river you have to use "Watercraft".
How do you feed the 10mm bolies by feeder or dropper or just throwing in upstream??

I love chub. If i barbel fish i use an avon rod with centrepin. Not carp gear.
First time I caught my best barbie of 6 pounds.useing my Mava 12 foot rod...

scope sawn off 6ft 2lb or 9ft 3.5lb depending on the situation
love barbel, favorite fish to catch, unfortunately only ever caught one =[ when i can drive planning on visiting lots of rivers for barbel, until then i guess ill stick with course lakes
Never been and don't live close unfortunately, but i will be putting it on my list of places to go =P getting a car is going to be terrible for me... so much petrol .... so many miles XD

In my opinion this stretch of river has become over fished since being promoted by the likes of des and in the fishing magazines

Don't use Carp gear for Barbel. Last thing you want is a tippy Carp rod when you have a 15lb Barbel going on crazy lunging runs. Better off with a cheap deadbait rod, through action and more likely to handle the 5oz of lead sometimes needed to hold bottom.

Jimmy Gilbert there are plenty of nice day ticket stretches along the middle severn, des is from bewdley one of the best spots for barbel, highley is also very productive on a good day, the ship inn offer £5 a day ticket and slightly up you have Bert who allows night fishing at the same cost' perfect place for a barbel, google this ship in highley

wow its sooooooo hard to fish for barbel with carp gear! stop making it so hard for people, not science and any one will tell you that when there switched on they will bite all day long, just watch the chub don't suck you off first!
