Why Captive Tigers Can’t Be Reintroduced to the Wild | WIRED

- Netflix's "Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness" has opened up the world's eyes to big cat ownership in America. Outside all the headlines-generating drama, the documentary casts some light onto the big cat black market. In the US, Tigers are illegally being sold, bred and kept as pets. Dr. John Goodrich, Chief Scientist and Tiger Program Director for Panthera, the global wild cat conservation organization, sits down with WIRED to talk about these concerns. Can these captive animals be reintroduced into the wild? Is it ever possible for a tiger to actually make a good pet?

Yes, the questions that the doc should have asked

Exactly, straight to the point no BS
Absolutely! many journalists seems to think that every interview is about themselves and not about the subject!
I love cats, and I absolutely LOVE big cats, and it would be an absolute dream to pet or hug a little tiger or lion cub. But I would never, in a million years, do it. Loving animals is about recognizing what's best for *them*, not indulging your crazy dreams to hold them or have them as a pet. Keeping a wild animal for yourself, or giving money to places that do that kind of thing, is the epitome of human selfishness. Animals do not exist for our entertainment.
Tigers have always been one of my absolute favourite animals - so of course I'd love to cuddle a tiger. but I'm the same as you - I like animals to be able to live as true to their nature as possible. Watching Tiger King made me so angry, seeing big groups of tigers in small cages (they are solitary animals, goddamnit!) and the cubs being taken as soon as they are born just to be exploited for a few months. My heart is bleeding for those poor animals.
Texas Forever We don’t OWN wild animals.
Texas Forever The only thing you own is the trailer in the woods. Sit Down. Be QUIET. 🤫
Texas Forever Hushhhh 🤫 I think your mammy is calling you to eat your roadkill. If you help her set the dinner table, then you might be able to go huntin tomorrow.
@Texas Forever The difference is dogs and cats are domesticated and tigers are not.
The thing I hated the most about ALL of the people (edit: in the show) is that they honestly believe that they do the best for these animals by keeping them in small cages and hitting them when they do what a big cat do. Also the excessive breeding and then stealing of the cubs can't be good for the tiger mothers well being...
In the wild, tigers breed every two years or so. In captivity, the female tigers are often bred as soon after they deliver as possible, as many as two or three times a year. This is terrible for them as they are not meant to reproduce this often. They end up having all sorts of health problems.
not Carole. Shes fighting for the tigers, visit her Big Cat Sanctuary website. Her cages are truly bigger than the show let on.She doesnt breed animals, she doesnt put on shows. Tours are held to pay for their care.
taraterm3 she a murderer too
taraterm3 I’m not defending neither Joe or Carole because she’s a hypocrite too because she’s still keeping Tigers and not breeding them in the way they can be reintroduced into the wild, most zoos have a program that breeds wild animals in large enclosures with very little human contact so they can keep their prime genetical instincts. So yea Carole really isn’t doing much as a so called “animal rights activist”
@@jajaonnazaza yeah my thoughts exactly, she also bred these animals for the longest time. I think she's only found a better business model in this animal "industry" by pretending to be against breeding and such.

Well the documentary is about Joe......
A central Ohio man who had his own private wild animal park released his entire collection before killing himself in 2011. Law enforcement agencies had to find and kill about 50 bears, wolves, tigers, lions and so forth. Columbus Zoo officials were able to capture only a handful of animals alive. That's what it took to get legislation passed to outlaw private ownership of exotic animals here.
Those cops got to do something rare that day. Something they probably will never again in their careers. And that was gun down tigers by the bucketload.
Pathetic beyond description.

Honestly i was completely uninformed about this, the thought did cross my mind, like why stop in captivity breeding if its an endangered species, but this interview explained it very well, support conservation zoos not roadside zoos
Reachon Yep! The way I do it is, I donate to a sanctuary to take care of the ones here humanely, donate to an AZA zoo to help preserve actual species, and donate to Panthera, which tries to preserve habitat and keep wild tigers where they belong. Why would someone want to own a huge, difficult to maintain and feed tiger when you can have a domestic cat that will treat you exactly the same?
Because they are crazy. I don't think that it should be illegal to own Tigers though, if you do that then you should make owning cats illegal, too.
@@dl2839 Cats aren't the same thing as tigers even though they are both felinae and share common characteristics. Cats can live perfectly healthy and long lives as pets, they aren't an endangered species and they have been domesticated since remote times. Also, a cat can't kill you just by playing with you, unlike a Tiger. I don't see how you're making it as if Tigers = Cats
@@bxttersweetheart Should it have been illegal to domesticate Cats in the first place? Should it have been illegal to domesticate Dogs? Dogs can kill humans and they certainly could when they were wolves. Making things illegal just because you disagree with the practice is no way to run society.
David Lieberman it’s illegal because they are one of the fiercest cats and will kill you in an instant if they want. And it has happened many times, then you are left with an endangered pet that’s stuck in their closure or they get loose and kill more people. It’s simple logic to see why it’s illegal. I don’t care about talking about the domestication of cats or dogs. Simply put, they are too big and dangerous to be kept as a pet

@Arrow Boy ik but it will struggle with survival. Imagine a tiger born in captivity. Food is given to most of it life, it not used to hunting. No it isn't, people should be allowed to keep their Tigers.
David Lieberman But why? More importantly why is it ever a good idea to own something like a Tiger in Captive?
Domestic Tigers are also non viable to re introduced into the wild because of poachers. Call it what you will but domestic Tigers should be seen as a stop gap against extinction and treated accordingly. I will agree absolutely that they should not be pets or curiosities because that is not their purpose.
There was a genetic study of domestic tigers (or rather, generic American circus tiger descendants in captivity) and it was found that some of them were pure Siberian or pure Bengal (and not white) so those individuals could be useful in a breeding program. Most of them are Bengal-Siberian mutts.
@@pyrovania I don't doubt that. My main concern is the danger posed by poachers and factory farmers.
@LagiNaLangAko23 That would depend on the animal. For a wild tiger, that purpose is obvious as it is the Apex predator of its natural habitat. Domesticated Tigers on the other hand, are poor predators. They're not so great at killing efficiently which is why mallings by domesticated big cats tend to be far more greusome. They literally don't know how to kill people quickly. They don't know how to hunt because they're being fed. It could be said that many domesticated animals lack purpose.

This interview is seriously better than Netflix show, which is reality TV masquerading as a documentary. Here, someone actually qualified is speaking on this legitimate issue, and the interviewer is spot on with concise and useful questions.
There are several good sanctuaries that take good care of their cats. It is not entirely a binary situation.
it is, it's completely not about the treatment (and trust me "good care" is always a mask, big cats arent little pets just like that), it's about the fact that it does basically nothing for tiger conservation. They are indeed basically useless for anything else than "pets" and IF their "instincts" (mostly just a bad mood because of not being in the wild) they attack someone and then bam probably death, it's just bad this is just animal abuse, they need space too, the reason there are no GW sharks in captivity for example is they die, not enough room in any aquarium in the world. they need territory, the wild is not only where they are at their best, need to be, should be and where they are TRULY comfortable.

Money. That's all. Pure greed.
The cat at 9:25 made me so sad...
Yeah... the fur, the pacing, but mostly the eyes. It has a crazed look, as if it's desperate..

Tigers are my favorite animal. I think they’re beautiful creatures and cubs are so cute and adorable but I would never want to keep one as a pet. I understand they’re beautiful wild creatures and it makes me sad that people actually say “I want one.” I honestly haven’t watched the Netflix documentary because I know I’ll get upset, especially since people are saying it didn’t educate or get the point across that it’s wrong.
Was discussing this with the boy friend. It would make more sense to just regulate and license people. Just putting more hoops to jump through should slow the rate of ownerships and breeding
With all the nice cameras everyone has in their pockets these days... How are people still unable to film themselfes without it looking like trash?
Because it's a live call
@@joecramp2987 and as a reporter you aren't able to just do a video call and use your phone to film yourself as well or at least turn on some lights?
It's their job. No problem with the expert looking a little rough, but if you play journalist you should at least try not to suck.
@@stefan514 Is it their job? I would assume lighting and camera issues to be mostly down to the lighting and camera crew.
I mean, I'm glad when a journalist digs into a subject matter and asks proper questions rather than copypasting headlines. Sure could do with a little touch-up, I agree, but ehh.
@@onkelpappkov2666 as if turning on a light would be rocket science. How low is the bar these days? 🤷🏼♂️
there were a lot of layers to that show for sure
awesome video
Hi hope yall staying safe in quarantine
Likewise! Thanks for sharing the positive energy. It's much appreciated 🙏🏾
I wish this video could be added to the documentary so that more people can be educated on this topic. Sadly, most people only care about the dramatization of the conflict between Joe and Carol and being able to discuss the general topic with others to show how they are in the know about this 'hot topic'
