One of my favorite players growing up.
I haven't seen that incredible moment in 36 years... when I saw it live on TV back in early April 1981! Opening day had been pushed back due to a major snow storm.... The NY area dug out and finally the game happened... Old hero Murcer (back where he belonged since 1979) blew us all away!
Opening day pushed back for a major snowstorm was 1982, not 1981
Murcer was almost cut before season opener. He made team and fans gave him an ovation while in on deck circle. Fans loved Murcer for his performance during a down time for Yankees during early 70 s and his heroism on and off field the day Munson was buried.
I love ya bobby
May he rest in peace Bobby.
I was at that game. Murcer was my favorite player!
Yeah you and a million other people.
I was there also
My brother took a picture just when Murcer swung
He got the auxiliary scoreboard in the back round
It’s the perfect picture.
He was my hero in 1971. I was even hoping his 1 for 3 in all star game 1971 would count in raising his average, That's how much I followed his stats. But obby just didn't get over the top the way I had hoped. He had a weak throwing arm.
He did win a pennant! Way to good Bobby!
My hero as a young man and Yankee fan..my favorite all time ballplayer..never should have been traded..I did and still hate Steinbrenner for it.
and GM Gabe Paul had fun w it too. Told friend "listen to this- this is going to be good" and called Murcer to tell him his was traded.
Joe, if this makes you feel any better, not long after he was traded I was picking up my sister on a red-eye from LA at JFK.
The airport was deserted. I went to the baggage claim area to wait for her when I saw a lone figure standing in the distance. Could it be? It was George. I marched up to him and said verbatim:: “You said when you bought the team as long as I’m the owner, you(Murcer) will always be a Yankee. Yankee fans will never forget you said that”.
He looked at me incredulously as I stormed away.
That was for all of us!
@@davidzimmerman2241 way to go, David. Nice job!
Traded for Barry bonds father, Bobby, the guy Barry always looked in the air at home plate after hitting a home run thinking his dad.
I loved Bobby ✝️✝️✝️💓❤️
Great...Great...Great...
I remember vividly seeing this home run on grandmas old back and white tv...and I loved it...but...I think I mustve said that already...anyway.....
Good 'ole Mercer. Cub from 77-79
Dan Mahon
You couldn't have taken a few seconds to make sure you spelled his name correctly?
Disrespectful dullard.
No cheapie either. That was to a deep part of the park.
In true Yankee style!
Back in the days when the stands were filled with real Yankee fans and the cheers were loud.
I miss the old stadium and I miss the old Yankees. Hasn't been the same since they moved into the fake ballpark.
Looks real to me
Can't agree more. That soulless stadium is a sad replacement
Even the later years of the old stadium were overly commercialized compared to back then. The moved in fences, advertising all over the place and louder rock music ruined the old time atmosphere.
it’s a beautiful stadium it just isn’t “Yankee Stadium” and should not be called that. Yankee Stadium doesn’t exist anymore, it was torn down. maybe Yankee Stadium II?
Loved Bobby Murcer. Hated when they traded him for Bonds earlier. Always a Yankee regardless.
I remember Bobby. He was a Yankee.
and my best friend and i were there!
Bobby murcer was little ⚾️ Mickey mantle ❤
He, unfortunately, was supposed to be the "next Mantle". Nobody should have had that burden.
Shea Stadium killed Murcer's career when the Yankees played there.
Interesting. Why do you say that?
@@blacjackdaniels200 The "feel" of Old Yankee Stadium vs. Shea. Not to mention the dimensions. No short porch...not that he needed it much. Same thing happened to Duke Snider, moving from Ebbets Field in Brooklyn to The Coliseum in L.A.
He hafed Shea stadium
HOLY COW!!!
I will always be a big Bobby Murcer fan. But the reality is, his numbers were fading slightly the year before he was traded. Shea only added to the power outage.
My favorite player of all time after Mickey Mantle
think mick the quick was the CF wishing he was back in pinstripes right there
Rangers uniforms were cool
Yanks rays brought me here
Not so great work by the camera man, he probably didn't see the ball
Humphrey would have beaten him anyway in 68
“Grand glam”???
I’m a yankee fan since 1974 no disrespect to Bobby murcer he was a good solid player and good guy he just wasn’t a true home run hitter they can hit them out of any park never heard Schmidt or kingman complain about shea !
