The partnership between Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor began in the 1976 film "Silver Streak." The movie was a critical and commercial success, marking the start of a collaboration that would span several more films, including "Stir Crazy" (1980), "See No Evil, Hear No Evil" (1989), and "Another You" (1991). The duo was celebrated for their chemistry and comedic timing, which brought laughter to audiences worldwide. However, behind the scenes, their relationship faced challenges. Wilder and Pryor had distinctly different approaches to comedy. Wilder was known for his meticulous and disciplined acting style, emphasizing precise timing and rehearsal. On the other hand, Pryor was renowned for his improvisational brilliance and raw, unscripted humor.
Their differences in comedic style and professional approach often led to conflicts during the filming process. Pryor's freewheeling improvisational style clashed with Wilder's desire for structure and adherence to the script. Pryor, a stand-up comedy legend, was accustomed to the live, unscripted nature of his work, whereas Wilder was more accustomed to the structure of traditional film acting. Their conflicting work styles sometimes strained their relationship on set. Pryor's spontaneity could catch Gene Wilder off guard, and Wilder's insistence on following the script might stifle Pryor's creativity. This discord occasionally spilled into disagreements and tensions, affecting their working relationship.
Despite their differences, both Gene Wilder and Pryor recognized the magic they created onscreen. They appreciated each other's talent and the unique flavor each brought to their collaborations. Their chemistry and undeniable charisma on camera helped them overcome their differences and deliver performances that have stood the test of time.In the end, their collaboration, though challenging at times, resulted in some of the most memorable and beloved comedic films of their era. The legacy of Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor as a comedy duo remains a testament to their ability to transcend their personal differences for the sake of laughter and entertainment.

If you actually researched this you would hear gene say in his own words how he felt about Richard and it wasn’t hate. He didn’t know about Richard’s raging drug problem so got frustrated at his lateness and unpredictability. Yes they approached film differently but Wilder would never have worked with him so many times if he didn’t value him. In his interview with Alec Baldwin, he says of Richard, “when he was good, he was good but when he was bad, he was bad”.

At one of Richard’s tributes, Wilder said he used to wonder if Richard liked him. Then one day he [Richard] invited him to lunch. During the meal someone interrupted them for autographs and Richard cursed-out the person in a rage. After he settled down he asked Wilder, “Was I a f***ing asshole a second ago?” And Wilder responded, “Yes you were!”. Richard shook his head and regretfully said, “I hate being that way … it’s just that I don’t like people interrupting our time together. We really don’t get to hang out much and this time is important to me.” That's when he saw the real Richard Pryor.

According to what I read in another source, Gene Wilder didn't necessarily hate Richard Pryor like the title of this video claims. I read that although they collaborated in four movies, they just weren't friends. Gene Wilder once said in a publicity column that Richard Pryor's cocaine addiction made him very unpleasant to be around. Therefore, I don't think Gene hated Richard. He just couldn't stand being around him for long periods of time due to his persistent drug use.
My favorite movie with Gene Wilder to this day is Silver Streak. I absolutely love that mysterious comedy! Gene was right about the remake of Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory. The horrible "Charlie And The Chocolate Factory" with Johnny Depp was a complete insult to the 1971 original with Gene Wilder. Johnny Depp portrayed a complete weirdo and plus the movie was too cheesy with all of the ridiculous special effects! Gene Wilder was a little silly at times with those memorable quotes like "Little surprises around every corner, but nothing dangerous!" and "If the good Lord intended us to walk, he wouldn't have invented roller skates." or "Strike back...reverse it!" He was actually very genuine as Willy Wonka and it showed straight through in the end.

As far as Mr. Wilder goes, he's starred in some of my favorite film, such as Willy Wonka/Chocolate Factory, Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles, etc And of course All the collaborations with Pryor!! I have heard/ read stories, about Pryor's wild & mischievous ways on the Stir Crazy set, which may've caused tensions, but Gene & Richard has always spoke fondly of each other, and snd starred in 2 more films together!! And Finally when Richard retired due to his health problems, on his Farwell TV special; Gene via satellite; paid a great tribute to his friend. In his memoir, Gene only ever had great things to say about Richard-how incredible their chemistry was but that they just never spent any real time together off set (Richard ran in very specific circles & was always very busy, according to Gene, & I don’t think anyone would contest that). He also spoke of the very clear admiration & respect they had for each other’s work from the moment they met. Hardly words of hatred, I’d say.
