    I just started to see if I could do this. 2023 am 73 years old. They no longer have the floral wire but have the stones and sea glass. I got 20 gauge galvanized to practice with at small local store. Well, not doing very well. This video looked the easiest for me, but alas, still working at the first one. You are a blast to watch. Fun and real. You make a mistake and you just work with it. Good instructions for wire wrapping and, I think, life itself. Thanks loads. 😊

    So, Matt...I bought some river stones at Dollar Tree and put them through some coarse grit in my rock tumbler to remove the wax. Then put them through a pre-polish, polish and finally a burnishing cycle. They came out beautifully shiny & I can't wait to put them to use!

    • @MattsCrazyArt
      @MattsCrazyArt  Před 3 lety +1

      Excellent job. I didn't realize till months later some had a wax coating. I boiled some for 30 min in a pot and the wax kept floating up to the surface and I kept rubbing them with paper towels and throwinf them back in to boil more. Tumbling sounds more efficient.

But of course , I would never want to impede your spontaneous experiments.

    My experience with Dollar Store stones (the black ones) is that they are oiled to get that dark color and when soaked in water they turn gray. I love a nice stone. Sometimes, some states, you can find petrified wood, agate, etc., on the ground. Also, there are lots of sellers of tumbled stones.

    • @mjremy2605

      This is easily fixed. You have a choice of:
      1. Rubbing stones with Microcrystalline or Carnauba wax and buffing them. This will need to be repeated occasionally or after washing stones.
      2. Tumbling them in a small tumbler $100 on Amazon with the right media to permanently polish the stones.
      3. Coating stones in clear diluted Polyurethane to give a permanent shine. Dilute water based Poly with water, or dilute oil based Poly with Mineral Spirits. I work only with Varathane Oil Based Clear Interior Satin Polyurethane. I dilute with 50:50 with Mineral Spirits. If too thick, add more Mineral Spirits or Paint Thinner. Let dry on prongs so there are no marks on reverse side. Recoat if necessary. You only want a light coating. Let it cure for 1-2 days to fully harden before you work with the stone. Nice and shiny.

I recently made a bracelet out of glass vase fillers, or you could possibly use glass stones that are put in aquariums. It's not my original idea. I've never worked with hammered wire. So, could you start with a loop, then hammer the wire without bending it first, then wrap as you go? Putting in the bends as you need them? Anyway, just a thought as I haven't worked with hammered wire before. Love your creative commentary & jewelry design! Subbed!

    • @MattsCrazyArt
      @MattsCrazyArt  Před 4 lety +2

      J. Harrison, it'a much harder to bend after being hammered and also harder to make smooth loops and curves.
      So the rule is you bend it into the shape you want as much as possible before hammering...
      But also, you CAN'T hammer two crossed pieces or they will break. So some parts that are going to wrap around each other you can only shape AFTER the hammering.

    • @janetleeharrison
      @janetleeharrison Před 4 lety

      @@MattsCrazyArt Oh ok, I see what you mean. Well dang! LOL

    • @mjremy2605
      @mjremy2605 Před rokem

      As Matt mentioned you have to bend first then hammer for two reasons:
      1. When you hammer or twist or work with metal wire, it 'work hardens'. It is less bendable than in new state. To make it like new you have to 'anneal' it or heat it enough to relax it. Another whole technical chapter. This is chemistry and material science.
      2. Once you hammer it, it turns from a round cylindrical shape to a flat rectangular shape. Now its hard to work with not only due to hardening, but because you have to watch for the flat shape to lay in a certain way without stressing out the thinner metal wire. More manipulation, with a more fragile, stiffer, more prone to break wire. See?
      This is why you do most of your bending before hammering. You have more flexibility and less work in angling the wire. Try it out and you will see right away. Its only theory till you experience it. Watch lots of videos from others to understand why some things are done in a certain order.
      Know that wire comes in 3 flexibilities: Dead Soft (ideal for wrap), Half Hard (Ok for frame but not wrap), Hard (do not use). Craft wire is often Half Hard but it looks like this 12 gauge aluminum is Dead Soft, so hammering it makes it a bit harder for a frame.
